Hi I’m back to being insufferable because I love the irony in the symbolism here:
The pyramid of bodies is the exact visual language used in classical Renaissance art:
The triangle the eye unconsciously identifies is a structural shorthand used to represent a struggle toward a singular point. Géricault explicitly used it in The Raft of the Medusa to show a pyramid of dying people culminating in the one guy waving a flag for salvation:
Another good example is the Vigeland Monolith in Oslo:
A mass of bodies reaching upward is heavily present in Ascension art like the Assumption of the Virgin above. The physical rule of these pieces is usually: the lower figures are crowded together and dynamic to show struggle— while the top figure is alone, calm, still, and surrounded by negative space ((showing detachment)). This is the case with Sephiroth at the top there to mirror how divine figures are framed to contrast earthly chaos with divinity.
The mass of bodies reaching upward represents human desperation, the collective cry of people suffocating under mortality and the chaos of existence, desperately clawing their way to the highest peak of spiritual escape to try to liberate themselves from that suffering.
But .... Then you have the irony. You place Sephiroth at the top of that exact structure like a god looking down on a mountain of black robes, the world, humanity.
And the reality is he’s not detached from the desperation at all. He’s completely trapped by it, and if anything that's why he’s at the top. His “ascension” is fueled by the exact same desperate, obsessive need to escape his past, his trauma, and everything that binds him to the humanity he despises.
Just as everyone else is below him. What makes this even more brilliant (imo) is that it visually mimics the physics of the Reunion itself. Sephiroth thinks he’s pulling the strings from above, but that mountain of bodies is rushing toward him because every single cell of Jenova is magnetically snapping back into place. But even Jenova herself is trying to break free of her own isolation. Meaning the creature Sephiroth worships (I use this word lightly) is just as trapped by hunger and desperation as the humans she infects.
He’s just as stuck in the mud of pain and existence as the rest, but he’s represented as a god, the savior, the judge at the top of the mountain. When he’s just the guy screaming the loudest at the top of the raft.
And stay safe everyone!
So if I make a video about how to legitimately sedate a werewolf, should the tone be:
- Like a legitimate veterinary medicine lecture
- A monster hunter’s quick and rough notes
- Detached/Retired academic assuming you’re about to do something stupid
Or something else?
We ended up with a mix between legit veterinary medicine and detached academic:
there was an extremely aggressive and persistent anti-vaccine dude in the comments of a virologist who was explaining the science behind vaccines and explaining research and studies about their safety. I clicked on the guy’s account. he doesn’t believe in germ theory. not a troll. a guy who does not believe microorganisms are the cause of disease. what the fuck would she debate him about? HE DOES NOT BELIEVE IN GERMS.
Sometimes, when one has the energy, one engages the debate not the change the other person’s mind (already a lost cause) but rather to influence the quiet bystanders who are watching the show.
If someone has questions or is on the fence and is watching the showdown between the virologist and the germ denier, and the virologist is consistently clear, logical and presents well while the germ theory denier presents as an increasingly unhinged lunatic… that bystander is going to end up on the virologist side. It’s not about changing one germ denier’s mind, it’s about influencing all the other people watching.
Which is much the same reason right wing influencers like to find the least experienced feminists or debate partners possible. Not in the interests of a fair debate, but to influence the undecided bystanders.
“caught in the crossfire” is crazy work when it’s your own reporter and it’s a video where you can just watch the cop aim directly at her and shoot her completely 100% on purpose with your own two eyes
yeah if you still work for and associate with the cops you're scum. Right now, ACAB.
… not a crossfire.
I've never heard a Muslim complain about pork being "shoved down their throat" when they see someone on TV eating pork.
I've never heard a Muslim call someone a "groomer" for telling a child that pork exists.
French-Iranian author and illustrator Marjane Satrapi, best known for the book and film “Persopolis”, has died of "sadness", members of her
This one hurt, her work had such a profound effect on my life, thoughts, and politics.
May her memory be a blessing
From the article above:
“Marjane Satrapi died of sadness a little over a year after the death of Mattias Ripa, her husband and the love of her life,” members of her family said in a statement sent to AFP.
Satrapi’s husband, a Swedish producer, actor and screenwriter, died on April 8 last year.
A series of recent posts on Satrapi’s Instagram page spelled out the message “For I Lost the love of my life”.
[...] Her work "Persopolis" recounts the story of Satrapi’s early life in Tehran, struggling under the restrictions imposed by Iran’s Islamic leadership after the 1979 revolution before being sent to Europe by her parents to begin a life in exile.
Last year, she refused the French legion d’honneur award over the country’s “hypocrisy” in its dealings with Iran, citing French visa policies that prevented dissidents leaving Iran for the European country.
[ ID: photo of Satrapi with this quote:
The world is not divided between East and West. You are American, I am Iranian, we don't know each other, but we talk and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you. And our governments are very much the same.

Fantasy Biology: Kelpie (Water Horse)
The Water Kelpie (not to be confused with the Australian dog breed) is a water Fey spirit of Scottish origin. It spends most of its time depicted as a ‘handsome’ horse, often in black or grey, but legends tell of its shape shifting ability to look like an attractive human. Either way, most of the time it intends to drown you and chew on your innards.
The physical form of the kelpie has a huge amount of variation. It has been described as a horse, a horse with human hands on the front feet, a horse with backwards hooves, an attractive human, a crazy human, a human with horse hooves and a horse with serpents for its mane. That is a huge amount of variation in their physical form and it makes me want to say just one thing:
Go home Kelpie, you’re drunk.

"afab only housing" is honestly beautiful. it's #progress to use inclusive language when discrimating against trans women
you might as well just say "no men, and yeah I think men includes you trannies (but trans men aren't men you ladies are welcome 🥰)"
^^^
It really is one of the best examples of them compounding. Cause when I was in a really bad spot housing wise, a few times I applied to those anyway and made a point about being like "oh I'm afab" and it felt so fucking gross. But I didn't wanna be homeless. So I made myself uncomfortable (and for nothing as it turned out, I would not do the same thing again if I went back in time)
But even then, and even more now, I was so conscious of the fact that, as uncomfortable and gross as it felt.... It was an option. And if I was a trans woman, no matter how desperate I was, it would not BE an option. It's a way of understanding privilege more people need to take on IMO, cause it's not about whether or not I think of it as a privilege. Course I dont. That's not the point.

had a dream that there was this new tiktok trend called "scrubbing" where people would take images of fictional characters and put them in images of bathtubs and drag around transparent pngs of soap and brushes with their tiktok art tablets and like liquify tool their hair down to mimic giving them a shower. and people would get into flamewars in the comments of every single video over the types of soap they picked and if the images had decently removed backgrounds and if they got soap in their eyes. and it got onto the news because it turned out everyone doing the trend was doing it compulsively like they physically couldn't stop and each video was a solid few minutes long because they were just collectively obsessively recording themselves fake-showering these fictional characters and arguing about it online
for the record I have never used tiktok and like explicitly in the dream I learned about it secondhand from a discord server so there's that also which is funny I think
