of all people to call him to a secret rendezvous in an empty classroom, andromeda black was the last person ted expected. well, perhaps she made the most sense, but her demeanor towards him since the night they spent together had been cold enough to justify his skepticism. when she had approached him in the hallway she had seemed oddly tense, but like always left no room for him to ask questions. no room for anyone to stop and see them interactingâ see her talking to him. it seemed people were always excluding him into his own category, even if he wasnât the only muggleborn in the castle. it was just him that needed to be focused on and cast out. maybe it was because he wasnât very good at most subjects, despite his six years of dedication to magic. maybe it was the fact that the blacks, the harshest towards muggleborns, seemed to have it out for him the most. whatever it was, it weighed on him. and if meeting with andromeda in secret was the only way she could feel secure in meeting at all, he had to take it.Â
his short locks stood out in unkempt tufts, a result of his tugging at it throughout the remainder of his divination lecture. his robes, hardly reaching his ankles, hung loosely on his shoulders, and his tie crookedly poked out from under his sweater. his appearance was that of a man drowning in anxieties, all about what was waiting for him with andromeda. rushing through the halls helped nothing, and only angered the students that were calm enough to walk at an appropriate pace. excitement buzzed under tedâs skin, though he knew the reason behind this summoning could very well be something terrible. still, he felt the need to keep his own hope ups. if he didnât, he probably wouldnât have gone at all.Â
he hesitated just outside the door once he reached it, his hand hovering over the doorknob. he felt that stepping inside could mean either the make or break of his chances with the slytherin. taking in a shaky breath, his grip on both his bag strap and the knob simultaneously tightened and he stepped in. before he could take even a second breath, he was pushed back against the door. it closed behind him. puzzled golden eyes struggled to focus on the wording of the paper in front of him, but the girl behind it didât escape his gaze. she looked angry, no, furious. he took the note from her hands and slid out from between her and the door, putting a safe enough distance between himself and the terrifyingly angry girl. his eyes quickly scanned the paper as he stepped away, and a sense of dread sent chills up his arms and down his spine. for what reason, he had no clue. he didnât know andromeda very well, but whoever sent the note seemed to have the idea that they did. and a threat was their best way of making it known.Â
he flipped around, letting his book bag slide off of his shoulder and onto one of the various desks. leaning back to partially sit on the desk, he continued to stare at the note, as if repeatedly reading it would give it any more sense. the accusation from andromeda almost completely left his mind until he glanced up and saw her still standing there. âthisâŠ?â he held the note out, his hand slightly shaking. the confusion about the wording and the sudden attack had only made the boy even more anxious. âthis isnât funny,â he agreed, his brow furrowing in slight indignation. âi didnât send this. who do you think i am, andromeda?â
the first thing andromeda noticed was tedâs baffled expression as he took the paper from her. she stayed where she was, eyes scouring his face as he read the note. she watched confusion slowly transform into dread, and a knot started forming in the pit of her stomach as the realization made itself perfectly clear: it hadnât been him. she let out a breath she hadnât even realized sheâd been holding. she hadnât ever really believed it was him, now that she thought about it. she just hadnât been willing to consider the other option: that there was someone else out there who knew about them, someone who had the power to change andromedaâs life drastically.
a look of despair slipped over her face as she fell back against the door for support. normally, in the presence of someone else, especially a muggleborn, sheâd have swallowed her emotions and kept her face stone cold. but what difference did it make now? merlin, she was a fool. to think that she had any sort of agency over her life, that she could gain any kind of independence by defying her family behind their back ... and now here she was, faced with the cold reality of her life. and the ironic part was, sheâd felt safe with ted. there was something about him -- about his eyes, about his smile -- that had made her forget the kinds of consequences that could happen if someone like her was found with someone like him.Â
andromeda swallowed, closing her eyes and trying to slow her breathing. â --- i donât know, â she answered helplessly, pressing the heels of her hands into her eyes. â --- i just ... it was sent with the carnations and i -- i thought ... i HOPED -- â there was a long pause as possibilities ran through her head, each worse than the next. so much for her well-laid, thought out plans to leave quietly after she graduated. thereâd be a scandal -- her family would find out -- theyâd disown her -- sheâd be alone, nowhere to turn to, penniless and friendless -- her sisters would never speak to her again -- and ted ... she hated to think what would happen to him if bellatrix found out. â --- it wasnât supposed to happen like THIS. â
