Necessity is the mother of invention

With the COVID-19 outbreak, many business have had to change their business model to adapt to the sudden changes that have arisen. Old Fourth Distillery has had to do just that, as many bars and restaurants are not selling as much liquor as before the outbreak. The shortage of hand sanitizer is something Jeff and Craig Moore noticed they could help change with their distillery. At first, the brothers began giving out free sanitizer to neighboring businesses as well as the heavily populated homeless community in the area, but quickly realized they had to turn this into a business for now when orders from FEMA and other out-of-state businesses began to roll in.

In Ema Carr’s March podcast, she sits down with former police officer, Corey Lowe to discuss Corey’s battle with Georgia’s representatives in obtaining proper medicine for her daughter with severe seizures. Corey Lowe spends countless hours at the state capitol fighting the good fight to see a change in our marijuana laws. When she started lobbying at the capitol, Corey quoted other lobbyists who said to see any kind of action taken, they needed a “white, middle-aged male” representative.

To legally obtain proper medicine for her daughter, Corey has had to travel to Colorado to be granted marijuana oil.

Creative Loafing ends weekly print edition, focused on monthly, digital - 2017

“For decades, in-town Atlantans would pick up free copies of "Creative Loafing" at the local pizza place or bookstore or bar to keep up with local culture and news, as well as peruse the advertising for what's going on in concerts, plays and other events.

But the Internet and the smartphone made that activity less necessary. Today, "Creative Loafing" announced it was ending its weekly print edition, going monthly instead and focusing its energies on its digital platform.

"We've been seeing this through interactions with our audience and advertisers and how we consume information," said publisher Sharry Smith said in an interview today. "It was a very logical conclusion to make. We're in a whole new era." By Rodney Ho, 2017″

Burger Wars!

Creative Loafing and Georgia Beef Board presents “ATL Burger Week”. The event covers over 50 different restaurants and sales burgers for five dollars during the week.

“ATL Burger Week” started last year, the best burger was called “The Dain” by The Imperial restaurant. To win the competition you must sell the most burgers within a week.

This year some of the restaurants participating are last years winner The Imperial, Glenwood, Parkwood, and many more!

Ben Eason Buys Back Creative Loafing in 2017

In 2017, Ben Eason buys back Creative Loafing. Eason is the son of the original owners Deborah and Elton Eason.

Creative Loafing X Sketchworks

Creative Loafing has joined forces with Sketchworks Comedy to create ATL SKETCHFEST. Sketchworks Comedy is an Atlanta based comedy company founded in 2001. The company creates sketches, films, and awards comedy writers.

ATL SKETCHFEST is a 3-night event, audiences have the chance to see several different comedy sketch groups. During the performance’s videos submitted of comedy video shorts will also be played. The organizers of the event are also awarding the best show, by having five anonymous judges select a winner. The winner is awarded with a cash price at the close of the last show.

The Start of Creative Loafing

Creative Loafing started one afternoon in 1972, by Deborah and Chick Eason. Deborah was a photographer for Delta Air Lines, while Chick was a professor at Georgia State University. The Eason’s felt that Atlanta lacked a publication that told the city about different cultural types of events happening.

The Eason’s started by publishing guidebooks specially and custom for various corporations, such as Zoo Atlanta. They created a monthly magazine named P-s-s-t … A Guide to Creative Loafing in Atlanta, as a trial run and then started a free weekly publication titled Creative Loafing.

Creative Loafing stared as a four-person editorial staff, which operated out of the Eason’s home. The first edition that was published was eight pages and had 12,000 copies printed. The issues released in the 1970s showed events and some current news.

Creative Loafing is a U.S. city monthly paper and web site serving the Atlanta metropolitan area covering local news, politics, arts, entertainment, food, music and events.

With a monthly distribution of 60,000, Creative Loafing is Atlanta’s #1 print product. One can find a stack of Creative Loafing papers virtually anywhere in the inner city (I usually grab mine from Eat’s on Ponce) and they are a pretty entertaining read if you need to pass the time. From music to food, politics, events, local affairs, social issues, and even “the funnies,” Creative Loafing has been an Atlanta staple since their first issue in 1972.

One of their most well-known annual editions is the “Best of Atlanta,” which features a critic’s choice and a reader’s choice vote for best-ofs in the city for different categories such as nightlife, consumer culture, and local artists.

As digital platforms continue to replace magazines and newspapers, Creative Loafing continues to make themselves known by staying relevant and up-to-date on metro Atlanta’s current affairs.
