I love the Netflix series version of The Umbrella Academy with all my heart. But I would have really liked it if they had included one specific thing from the comics.

Spoilers!

In the comics, the organisation Five worked for did various surgeries/augmentations, including fusing his DNA with those of history‘s most well known and dangerous killers.

And I can‘t stop thinking about the line that Five says to the Handler in the show:

“You made me a killer.“

Not “you trained me to be a killer“ or “you made me kill.“

Just imagine his siblings finding out that their brother was made to be a monster, programmed to kill and enjoy the bloodlust.

Imagine the flashbacks of the surgery, with Five discovering that something inside of him has changed.

Him wondering if he‘s even himself anymore and trying to convince the Handler, as well as himself: “All this killing…I‘m done with it.“

But deep down, he knows that he never will be.

Lila and Five: A Misunderstood Love

(Put down your pitchforks. This is not what you think.)

Let’s get one thing out of the way: When I say “a misunderstood love,” I don’t mean we misunderstood it. Oh no, no. I mean the writers misunderstood it. Horrifically. Tragedy-of-Shakespearean-proportions misunderstood it.

And before you do what the internet does best and rages before reading the fine print, I absolutely do NOT ship Five and Lila. The exact opposite actually.

I'm posting this almost a full year after The Umbrella Academy Season 4 dropped. Why? I needed the distance. I needed the bile in my throat to settle. I needed the residual nausea from watching Five and Lila kiss to dull so I could return—not as a fangirl armed with rage, but as a critic armed with... well, still rage, but also analysis.

rewatched tua s3 and realised how much i hated it i forgot half the plot. couldnt even fathom s4 as canon. missed peak s1 and 2 where all the characters, storyline and music were woven into a beautiful apocolyptic quilt.

i have notes tho.. about how s3 could have played with Hotel Oblivion, the Travelator, Minerva, and potraying the parasitic relationship of the Sparrows within themselves and the city but thats for further brainstorming

good notes:

1. after rewatching, i do agree with some plot. like when pogo needed the sparrows to drug RH so the oblivion project will not go through, although it could have been explained better and earlier. the oblivion project made sense but poorly explained on why RH was so insistent. aside from the comics, i concluded that the oblivion was to create a new timelime where abigail was alive, which was successful and all RH wanted since she died in her little alien planet.

2. i enjoyed the harlan plot about him killing all the umbrella academy mothers. that is really cool tbh and something that ties the previous season to this new and unfortunate reality.

boohoo notes 👎🏾:

1. i dont agree with five's retirement though, i believe he is WAY smarter than settling since he should know more than just the paradox phychosis with their other 2019 self but also beg the question "who gave birth to this set of the umbrella academy" thats a whole paradox on its own which should have already been a problem. although debatable that all he wanted to do was save his family and not the world, he should have thought about this consequence which in the end could annihalate his entire family (again). so it IS his duty (goal) to think about it and act on it ...

2. i dont really see how the Commission could fail so easily, i feel that it could have been weaken but not completely broken. thats why Five needed to create the subway to allow for multiple timelines to exist. i say that embracing this complex universe is better than restraining it, and Five is to be the one who "mends" the branching timeline. metaphorically speaking it is as if there is a wide field with a designated concrete pathway (the original timeline) but people step on the grass and create desire paths (branching) and instead of erasing this desire paths (to ensure one timeline), Five builds new concrete paths to allow all these timelines to co-exists. its almost impossible to restore a single timeline now that Five went back to 2019 0.1 (original timeline where everyone dies) and further meeting RH in 1963 (which ended off with the decision that RH did not want to adopt the umbrella academy) technically, he is the problem and i want to see him be that solution. and reminder, he's a 58 yo cold blooded killer who understands the safekeeping of the timelime and not some 17 yo boy waiting for the right time to speak up. (when he finally realised it was allison scheming with RH and not doing anything to reveal it to the ENTIRE family)

3. i hate marcus freaking dies in the first few eps. like they are posed as this menacing dictating super people and marcus should be smart enough to not die. along with jamie and alphonso. they would have made epic fight scenes

4. adding on to point 2, the Commission needs to be smarter. ever since 1963, although there are some deviations from the original timeline it should have been highly watched over especially in 1989. in 1989, sudden deaths of the original umbrella academy should have sparked massive concerns. i can only assume thats when the whole timeline went to shit and the Commission started to falter. but i still dont see how it gets that terrible. and if it DID, then from the physical timelime 2019 0.2 since 1989 should have already been collapsing. temp agents should have been sent out to protect the umbrella academy and prevent RH from adopting the sparrows, this should have happened in 1989. but nothing was done, and i will believe that the Commission is deteriorating SLOWLY so there should have been enough time to eliminate the threat. (harlan) then in 2019 0.2 when the umbrella aacdemy arrives, they should have been immediately extracted out of the physical reality since they will be the paradox. and herb knew of their plans to travel back to 2019. this can alleviate further ruination from the original timeline. (more branches)

5. where is the old five from 1963 which had the correct calculations to go back to 2019? that plot could have been explored. i think the writers made a mistake with showing the umbrella academy through the portal in s2. it should have been the sparrows since RH will not adopt them and harlan kills them.. the old five should have been used in 2019 0.2 and help around the brellies. that would be cool to see.

6. klaus dies in 2019 0.1, which he should have been revived since he is immortal. he could have been recruited by aj charmicheal (just saying) and added into the Commission. that could be interesting for klaus and even for Five.
