It'd been an easy decision to make, running the store after work to pack a little goodies basket to take over to Ellie when he heard she wasn't feeling well. Sweets, meds, a heating pad, and some extra soft pajamas. Upon seeing his friend at the front door looking a little worse for wear Theo knows deep in his gut this was the right call. "Hey Ellie, thought you might enjoy a little pick me since I heard you weren't feeling too hot. How about you go rest on the couch and I'll get you set up with some snacks and gatorade." He makes his way into the house with a gentle smile, toeing off his shoes at the door and making way to the kitchen. "I also brought you some soft pjs if you wanted to change." Theo calls out over his shoulder.

"Don't shoot the messenger, Theo. All I'm telling you are the rumors I heard. But of course, rumour has it there are a few doctors who decided to take advantage of the fact that Project Hail Mary's a suicide mission for their own... personal enrichment. That's all I'll say. Good luck."
The answer isn't one he's expecting at all and he causes him to pause. Just trying to imagine what these people could be thinking while treating their work as a game causes a shudder to run through him. How was he going to tackle this new task now?
"Well thank you for letting me know, I appreciate you being willing to come to me with this information, especially with how sensitive this subject can be. Hopefully Stratt isn't in a meeting right now so I can connect with her. Might even find Grace if she's busy since I don't think this can wait."
(with mouth full) What chocolate chips?
"Can you eat those... medically? What's the conversion for that with hybrid dog?"
"I don't care you ate them, but you aren't gonna like... die are you?"
Theo grabs another handful off the counter and snacks on a few while he answers with a cheeky smirk. "Wanna watch and wait?" After a few moments he chuckles and sets his stolen snack down. "Ok, ok, I'm kidding. Not sure about the science behind it but chocolate has yet to send me to the ER."
“So you didn't take the bribes. Good for you. But rumour has it... that some of your Project Hail Mary co-workers took the bribes. You gonna tell Grace? Stratt?”
"Please tell me you're pulling my leg. This has to be a joke right?" Theo stares in angered shop for a few moments while his brain processes the information.
"Fuuuuuck. Ok. I'm gonna go let Stratt know, because there's no way in hell I'm gonna let them send someone in space that can't handle it." He's quick to stand up out of his chair and grab some folders with him, heading to the door before turning around.
"You wouldn't happen to know who would you?"
"I need you to tell me five things you can see."
"I'm not-"
He takes a breath. Slams his eyes shut and rubs his temples.
"This isn't a panic attack."
It is. It categorically is, but he'll be damned if he's going to admit that right now. Not to someone who's supposed to be evaluating his mental stability.
"They're asking to shoot me into space to die, I don't have time to do stupid little grounding exercises! This is... I'm-... I'm gonna say no. I have to. I can't do that to myself. To my kids. There are backups- Stratt always has backups, and backups of backups. I'm not the last choice- I'm not even the best choice-"
"Ryland, listen to me." Theo had never called the other by his first name, and it felt odd coming out. But hopefully it'd be odd enough to catch the other's attention enough to stop his spiraling. When he heard what Stratt's latest meeting was about, Theo was up and running from his makeshift office to find Dr.Grace as fast as he could. There was no way she was going to actually go through with this plan. Right?
"Humor me here for just a second. If you tell me five things you can see I won't ask you all the touchy feely questions my job says I'm supposed to. We'll just sit here for a bit until you're ready to get up and take a walk with me." Despite the stressful vibes of the moment he offers a gentle smile to try and reassure him.
"Or if you'd prefer you can tell me what you're hearing right now."
“Rumour has it... that some of the proposed candidates for Project Hail Mary attempted to bribe you to make their psychological assessments look better.”
Theo lets out a deep sigh, head hanging between his shoulders for a few moments. He was half tempted to give a vague answer but there really wasn't a point to not telling the truth. "Yeah. Quite a few people did it too even after I made it very clear I wasn't going to take any bribes. While yes this is a suicide mission it doesn't mean we want to send someone off to space who's going to suffer while they're out there."

Ryland groaned softly, then yawned, lazily stretching out his arms and tilting his head to either side, closing his eyes a few moments, then opening them again. He'd gotten a tip that Theo's office was a good spot to power nap between meetings and other Petrova Taskforce stuff, and that? Good tip. Dang good.
"Whu- huh? Why? What's-- wha'do the others treat you like, Dr. Colby?"
Theo's office chair rolls across the floor quietly as he scoots over to grab the cup of coffee that just finished brewing in his mini brewer. With the warm drink in hand he turn around to face the other lounging on his couch with a cheeky grin.
"Nothing like that Dr.Grace. I just meant you don't have the same, how should I put it? Ah yes! You don't have the same idiotic drive to die in space like a lot of the people here." He can't help the small chuckle that slips past his lips. Being part of the psychology team meant he'd been able to get a deep glimpse into the inner workings of more than just the astronauts getting a one way trip on the Hail Mary. So far he was a bit speechless with the general feeling of jovial suicide that was an under current for many applicants and team members.
"It's a bit of fresh air if I'm being honest. Most people who come into my make shift office don't realize they're bringing in a weird dark cloud with them that sticks around. But every time you visit you bring an energetic sort of quiet with you."

how many years has it been since they last met? rosaria can barely comprehend the passage of time nowadays, especially when it exceeds the borders of a weekly planner.
it's impossible not to recognise theo with his hellhound ears, fully dressed in a three-piece in this hole-in-the-wall restaurant. yes, she recognises him, but that's about it. theo has found himself the righthand of colby's matriarch, and his name frequently reaches rosaria's ear through the grapevine. she doesn't like dwelling on the past, and she sure has no time for heartfelt reunions. especially not when she's on a mission. with a plain white uniform and kempt hair that hugs her skull, she blends in with the busy waitstaff as a fellow colleague, new to the place and eager to learn the ropes and serve. the smile on her face must be alien to someone who knows — or used to know — her privately, but she doesn't have time to refresh her backstory when her target is right there.
despite his infamy, theo hasn't changed much. he tries to get her attention throughout the night, each time ignored by a convenient heel turn or head tilt. about half an hour later, just before theo's patience runs too thin, she manages to sprinkle the poison over her target's dessert with a sleight of hand; someone else will deliver it to his table, and for now, she has time to handle the puppy on her tail.
she heads to the back, not once turning around, until they are both completely out of sight.
Tonight was supposed to be his one night of the week where dinner didn't include a table full of people watching each other with calculated gazes and the words exchanged where full of fake flattery. Theo's favourite hole in the wall restaurant didn't give high end vibes, or stand out from the other italian places in the city, but it felt homey and the emptiness gave him enough peace to enjoy the meal that was placed in front of him. What he hadn't been expecting this evening was seeing a familiar face from across the floor. The first few times he'd seen Rosaria he was sure he was seeing things, maybe this was the first sign of a heart attack.
But as the evening went on Theo was sure deep down that his friend from years ago was in the same resturant as him. From then on his mission to try and get her attention had started. Frustratingly he was failing at this badly enough that by the time he was paying for his meal he was ready to bounce out of his seat and chase her down before she could escape. After chasing Rosaria to a back corner of the restaurant does he crowd up close enough to keep his voice low.
"Where the fuck have you been?" His voice is close to a growl with how much emotion is behind his words. Not that he'd admit what was going through his head right now.
