It is thought that immune-checkpoint inhibitors could exacerbate chronic hepatitis B and C by enhancing T-cell cytotoxicity to viral antigens. The effects of PD-1, PD-L1 and CTLA4 inhibitors on HBV and HCV have largely been unreported. Most studies with I-O drugs excluded patients with chronic viral hepatitis. However, recent trials investigating I-O in HCC included subjects who were known hepatitis B and C carriers.
