The future of humanity and technology: Futurist Gerd Leonhard at Open In…

(NEW TODAY: The 2nd episode of The Future Show is now available: the future of knowledge and learning - Futurist, Author & Keynote Speaker Gerd Leonhard)
The perceived value of data, basic information and fact-based human knowledge is becoming increasingly commoditised by the efficiency and sheer horse-power of digital technologies. Any Internet user can now look up, find out and tap into almost any information, anywhere, anytime — and very soon, artificial intelligence and so-called cognitive computing will become as normal as sending an SMS. The traditional education paradigm of just-in-case learning is being challenged by the just-in-time learning approach that the Internet seems to afford. As a result, human ingenuity and intuition (‘knowing without knowing’), creativity, social or emotional intelligence and a new kind of wisdom will matter increasingly.
The Future Show with Gerd Leonhard. Series 1, episode 1: Privacy Failure (by Gerd Leonhard) Brand new, just released!
In this episode: Is privacy really dead? Would a world without anonymity really be desirable? Should we simply accept that our communications, opinions, images, movements and actions are 99% public by default? Will wearable computing devices such as Google Glass, medical self-monitoring devices and smart watches and the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) make it even harder to adhere to some kind of privacy standard? Will we really live in world where ‘everything that happens must be known’ (read Dave Eggers’ book ‘The Circle)? TFS host and creator Gerd Leonhard believes that in a world where almost everything is watched, recorded and analysed, and where information spreads like wildfire, we urgently need to strike a personal balance between openness and transparency and a collective standard of privacy, and frequently review our data-sharing paradigms to avoid entering into truly Faustian bargains. Allowing for mistakes and imperfections is what makes us human, but how would still uphold this concept if we are being monitored and ‘quantified’ all the time

This is Meeting of the Minds episode #5 featuring my fellow futurist Ross Dawson and me discussing the key trends for the next 5 years: from ego to eco, human-machine interfaces and overlaps, sustainability, OTT media, the future of energy, collective vs artificial intelligence, distributed value creation, the p2p economy, the shift from closed to open, climate change, networked leadership and much more. Thanks to Jonathan Marks for doing the editing and supervising the production in Basel. Check out my MOTM playlist on Youtube.
Brand-new video on "the Future of Switzerland" Meeting of The Minds #3 with Ross Dawson and Gerd Leonhard (by Gerd Leonhard)
This is #3 of Meeting of the Minds, featuring Futurists Gerd Leonhard and Ross Dawson talking about the future of Switzerland (where Gerd lives). Topics include the future of banking, interdependence, ecosystems, technology trends, openness and much more. Check out the other episodes here: www.meetingoftheminds.tv A special thanks to Jonathan Marks for producing and editing this show https://twitter.com/jonathanmarks
The Future of Privacy after the NSA/PRISM revelations; Futurists Ross Dawson & Gerd Leonhard (by Gerd Leonhard)
Read the whole story here:
Today, Glenn Greenwald and his team published a pretty mind-boggling story on the Guardian (header image is via The Guardian, too, btw). This piece reveals another chapter in the Edward Snowden saga which, incredibly, seems to get worse and more far-reaching every week. Very bad news for President Obama as well as for ‘Mutti Merkel’ in Germany (facing the election on Sept 22). The details that are coming out in this piece could easily beat even Cory Doctorow’s most daring science fiction spins on the ‘big brother’ theme. Personally, I have no clue why the likes of Intelligence Director Clapper and NSA boss General Alexander are still allowed to maintain their positions after everything that has come to light, so far – it boggles the mind to observe how President Obama is getting away with this. But…maybe not. Security on the internet: NSA and GCHQ unlock encryption used to protect emails, banking and medical records • $250m-a-year US program works covertly with tech companies to insert weaknesses into products • Security experts say programs ‘undermine the fabric of the internet’
Now, incidentally, we just finished editing the second episode of TheMeetingoftheMinds.tv (MOTM) which features my fellow futurist Ross Dawson and me in a, if I may say so myself, quite thoughtful discussion on privacy, data security and the recent PRISM/NSA revelation. This video was literally just edited and published (thanks to Jonathan Marks) when I ran across this latest Guardian piece – so, good timing:)
Meeting of the Minds Episode 1: Big Data, with Ross Dawson and Gerd Leonhard (by Gerd Leonhard)
Great talks - must view!!
Gerd explains his 'Ego to Eco' meme to Adam Malik during the Digital London summit.
This a topic that Gerd feels very strongly about and here's a nice graphic representation of the idea http://www.futuristgerd.com/2013/03/21/from-ego-to-eco/
This video was recorded at the 2010 Monaco Media Forum. Dwight Witherspoon from Ericsson is seated next to Gerd.
If you want to see more of Gerd's thoughts on media, have a look at his media and content blog http://www.futuristgerd.com/category/content-media/
This is a video from a conversation Gerd had with Arjan Postma and Joergen van der Sloot over at FreedomLab in Amsterdam, in July 2009. They touched on a variety of topics: the economics of the media industry and why they don't really work anymore, why and how the Internet is challenging most of our assumptions, extracting value vs adding value, egosystem vs ecosystem, Sellaband, crowd-sourcing and the future of media companies, the hit-economy and the longtail... and much more. Enjoy :)
Data is the new oil - Gerd explains his idea to Phil Blizzard in the above video.
In another related presentation, Gerd's message was this: “Big Data. Big Intelligence. Big Opportunities” (delivered at Luxembourg Business Compass conference organised by KPMG and Luxemburger Wort).
