It has grown to be one of my favorite places to escape to when I’ve had too much of the Big Apple. On my latest visit, my dear friend @little__f0ot took me to the wonderland that is Busboys and Poets. I was smitten immediately by the bookstore you walk into. Books written by and about people of color. Adorable trinkets and cards in all variety. Being there was like walking into a space pulled out of my dreams. We were eventually seated and the wafts of food I smelled entranced me every time I walked past a new plate. After scouring the menu, I landed on the Mekhleme; an Iraqi corned beef hash with over easy eggs, ground beef, tomato, cilantro, onion and potatoes. I also ordered a side of cheese grits, the southern girl in me couldn’t resist. There is a reason Busboys and Poets isn’t located in NYC, as I would be found there every Sunday eating Mekhleme. It was hearty and filling and perfect for that cool day. Seasoned perfectly, savory and a bit spicy, it is something I would recommend every time. The dish was well thought out and executed perfectly. The grits were a delicious addition that made my southern heart swell with joy. Next time you find yourself in DC, swing by Busboys and Poets for a tasty as fuck brunch option.
