hello dearest ones! after much consideration (and general longing, lbr) i have decided to bring back the loveliest person ever miss zhao li hua, aka miss han mei, aka mom is a master vampire with memory manipulation (you can read a little more about how it works here). currently she works as a therapist specializing in traumatic events, and has her own practice in seoul that works with mundane and supernatural alike. (she has deals with some of the hunter clans that keep her and her ‘family’ just a little bit safer than others)

before she was turned, however, mei was a witch! and even though her practices have been lost over time, she is fully capable of tutoring or aiding young ones in their journey.

a little more info- @feykijung (and kijung’s own fledgling, @feykyuhwan ) are her ‘adopted’ kiddos, kijung having given to her by her own sire when he found him. (have you ever sired any yourself, mei? we just don’t know)

though she does come across as quite a motherly figure (i mean... she was already married and had 4 kids by the time she was turned so it’s only natural), mei is a very stern person and doesn’t take kindly to any disrespect or hint of it. (my pea brain: she is beauty, she is grace, she will punch you in the face)

while she doesn’t regularly associate outside of her own circle, mei does attend every social function and donates often to charitable causes, even if it means having a more quiet and observing, passive type of presence than actively partaking. she knows much more than you would think she does, and many, many people.

she doesn’t quite answer his question. he wonders if she’s stalling to try and keep something tender a secret, and he wonders if what he saw still hurts her too. kijung knows that after 400 years, all of the pain still lingers. it probably shouldn’t, considering a trauma therapist is practically his mother at this point, but it feels different, like a conflict of interest. maybe it’s just kijung’s excuse. maybe he wants to hang on to the suffering because he thinks he deserves it.

when he lost his best friend in venice, he almost asked mei to make him forget. he cried and cried but when she asked him if he was sure, he couldn’t say he was with confidence. if he forgot the death, he would’ve still been gone. the only answer was for mei to take all of his memories of him away, and that decision was too heavy for him. was he willing to forget the good to forget the bad? he wrestled with it for so long that the pain faded a little, and he didn’t think about forgetting anymore. sometimes he still does– thinks about all of the nightmares he lived and how easy it could be to forget. sometimes he wonders if it would make anything any better at all. (maybe if he forgot, he wouldn’t have turned kyu. maybe he could’ve saved his best friend from the affliction he was responsible for.)

what does he think mei saw? he fears the answer to that question, somehow. he fears how much he made mei hurt over the years without even trying, forcing all of his tragedy upon her, his life so heavy with it. he knows better than optimism after 400 years, but still: “i hope you saw…my dad teaching me how to fish, or the girl i was supposed to marry. i hope you saw venice from my eyes, or the way kyu reacted to me being a vampire, or…how thankful i am for you.”

he can feel the tears welling up in his eyes, even though this is nothing compared to everything he’s been through. maybe it’s just recalling it all: the good that tried to meet the bad and overwhelm it. sometimes it does, but sometimes…

“but i think you saw hwan, and…all the blood, and–” he cuts himself off, and inhales sharply, and he sits up properly– quickly. he doesn’t meet mei’s eyes, and it isn’t even to hide his memories from her. it’s just because he can’t. his hands curl up into loose fists where he rests them on his thighs.

mei listens calmly, patiently as kijung walks himself through his answer though it pains her to see him so deeply affected. he’s not wrong, not in any of his answers or the manner in which he stated them. yet what seems to shake kijung doesn’t stir much emotion within her, if only because mei has lived a life long enough to separate (mostly, that is) the feelings from it.

it doesn’t take long for the tears to creep up on kijung, and in all motherly aura, mei crosses the room in just a few strides, cupping his balled fists in her hands as she crouches to meet his level. it’s not unlike the tender moments they’ve shared before, the times mei has been there to console a still young kijung after the deaths of his friends and his frustrations, or when nightmares plagued him and she sat with him until sleep found him again.

“kijung,” she says softly, hoping to draw his gaze to her regardless of his discomfort. “i see everything that makes you you. the good and the bad, the joyful and the mourning.” she sighs, her thumbs rubbing small circles on the backs of his hands. “what i also see every day is you growing into a new person, learning from mistakes and always improving. and that should be what matters.”

before mei

lihua, as a human, was never truly human- born a witch and a courtesan, she was considered an elder in many of the social circles, lauded for her knowledge and magical skill in scrying and divination.

while she gave up on tracing her family tree long ago, in ‘life’, lihua married, and had three children, two boys, her eldest, and one girl. when she turned willingly, newly widowed at age 28, on the brink of an attack in their own village, she left behind her sons and daughter and her familiar, who subsequently bonded to her daughter.

if she allowed herself to look, mei would find that her legacy lasted far longer than expected, and over her 800 years of life, would be able to see just how far her family tree extends now, all the way back to her.

mei has plenty of knowledge retained from her time in practice- though she would teach ‘ancient’ methods, she is easily capable of nurturing a witch along their path and helping them refine their skill. her extended age has lended knowledge to a few history books, and she maintains cordial relations with several witches throughout their lifetimes.

his feet are propped up on the arm of the sofa, nintendo switch in hand, eyes bobbing across the screen. it’s animal crossing, of course– one of the only games he can play without getting frustrated, because it doesn’t exactly require skill to run errands for animals. he’s a little slow in hitting the button to catch fish sometimes, which is irritating, but he’s getting better. he can only dream those skills would translate into making his ability in other video games less abysmal.

it’s mainly so he doesn’t have to do his homework, of course, and because he isn’t enjoying the book he’s currently reading: historical fiction. sometimes the inaccuracies are funny, but this time, they grate on his nerves. he’ll have to go to the bookstore and get a new one soon.

mei steps into the living room, and kijung looks up briefly as she enters, likely to tell him to do his school work even though she knows he knows everything he could possibly learn in high school. maybe he’ll do it if he’s really bored.

it’s a strange time for the thought to surface, but the curiosity pricks at him regardless. it comes back around every couple of years, but he never asks because he figures it’s a sore subject. mei’s power to read and erase memories must come with a heavy burden. he can’t imagine; he knows she’s under enough strain, and has been for centuries, so he doesn’t pry despite kijung’s constant wanting to know. he has enough memories in 400 years on his own. he can’t imagine 800 years of other people’s memories.

it feels a little invasive, too. he knows her ability triggers merely by eye contact, and they’ve been together for centuries too– more than enough time to meet each others eyes hundreds of times. he wonders if she knows his memories better than he does now, and if there’s anything he could ever hope to hide from her. does she just not say anything?

“hey, mei,” he begins, voice casual, yet likely anxiety inducing, clear indication that a question is coming. “when we first met…when you looked at me…what did you see?”

mei is a creature of habit in more ways than one- even over the years, she’s always maintained an evening routine by default, with little change. tiring to some, perhaps, but a comfort for her own. she’s lived many lives, and her most recent occupation more taxing than others- it drove her to drinking, she could joke, though mei’s definition is one glass of were’s blood in the evening, glass in one hand and book in another, as it’s always been.

when she enters the living room this evening and notices kijung glance up at her from his game, a brow raises at him, the unspoken gesture enough to convey what she would say without even having to. she doesn’t push him as much as she would have in the past to complete homework, and a part of her feels sympathetic toward his cause- a teen forever, the thought causes her to grimace inside.

she doesn’t want him to be a bad student though, even as hellbent as he seems on achieving just that this time. it’s a new game that he’s playing lately though, so she decides to let him enjoy it a while longer, wordlessly continuing to the chaise.

it’s not long before kijung breaks their companionable silence, pulling mei’s attention with the way his ‘hey’ sounds so open-ended, and the tone so.. timid. she glances over at him from over her book, a soft “hmm?” in acknowledgement.

though his question isn’t one she expects, not now, at least. she stays silent for a moment, placing a bookmark between her pages with a small sigh and closing it, leaning forward for what could be a long conversation. it doesn’t bother her to be asked, and a part of her has wondered if kijung had this question, keeping it bottled up as long as he could.

with one hand propping her chin, she finally asks a question in return, “what do you think i saw?”

'i could tell you it's the heart, but what is really killing him her is loneliness; memories are worse than bullets.

mei's ability, memory manipulation, has both many benefits and many drawbacks- cons being that any tampered or erased memories become her own, that she must have physical contact in order to alter memories, even the briefest of touch. eye contact is something she loathes; prolonged, it invokes her ability passively, viewing the person's memories with no control over what she sees from them. (only by touch can she selectively view them, passively she sees either the most recent or most traumatic - it depends on the mood of the subject) reading memories, she could argue, is worse than reading minds, yet in spite of it, she continues to serve as a trauma therapist to those in need. sharing memories, is the primary non-physical offense that mei has, effectively able to ‘lock’ a person’s psyche in to a memory (or set of them) for distraction or torture purposes, as the memories come with the feelings the host experienced at the time of it. obvious drawback to that however, is the strain that it puts on her- time too long spent altering or sharing causes a very minor nose bleed (sometimes you won’t see it, but she’ll feel it), and when she really pushes it, bleeding from her eyes - the latter which requires at least 36hrs of recovery and feeding. the former, a bit better managed by just ‘topping off’ and closing her eyes for a bit.

“niceties to ploy me”, jinwoo repeats sarcastically, though there’s a hint of sadness in his voice. mei is polite as always, using of fancy words and elegant make-beliefs to keep a safe distance from the world. jinwoo hates it, but he appreciates the effort she must put into it regardless. “the packets are fresh,” he reiterates in response, sitting up at last. “had them delivered just this morning. male, young, a hint of early diabetes…” his words linger in the air.

but of course, she’s not here to share a meal. her maternal instincts are repulsive, if anything because jinwoo has never had anyone look out for him like that. “kijung and his fists are his own responsibility,” he looks at her at last, defiantly, like a little child that refuses to listen to reason when they’re told to make up with a classmate after a brawl in the yard. “he didn’t kill me and i’ll be healed by the end of the day, so i guess you’re off the hook anyway. there’s no cleaning up to do.”

“i just can’t stand him and how he hovers over everyone as though no one is worthy of so much as a glance,” he holds her gaze for a while longer, then stands up, circling around the couch and wincing as his head spins again. “…i’m mostly just hungover. it’s fine.” there’s something in the way she pities him that makes him want to crawl out of his skin at any cost, so he desperately seeks a change in subject instead of reiterating how much of a bitch kijung really is.

jinwoo looks elsewhere, loses himself in thought, returns to a very cold reality he despises above everything else. “you can get me a birthday present if you want, though,” he almost laughs. “it’s this week. 186. yay, me!”

“ah,” at the description, mei half smiles despite jinwoo’s sarcastic reiteration of her own words, “a little too sweet for my tastes, but thank you.” her thanks is sincere though, as is concern for someone she really had no business being concerned about, if it weren’t for the fact that most of the time, she was held responsible for kijung- a fact she had long grown used to. perhaps it was just a habit after all though, the younger was half her age now and should know better, but even still, it’s simply her nature.

jinwoo’s gaze finally meets her own and she sees the drunkenness and frustration held in his eyes, and she sighs. jinwoo was right, kijung and his fists were his responsibility, and at some point, she would have to force herself to withhold from intervening in the situations he caused. her brows furrow, at first, deciphering the unspoken subtext that hung in the air. mei has to stifle a small laugh at the way he describes kijung as having what appears to be a holier than thou attitude- something she was sure she worked on with him previously. “i would offer a hangover cure, but i think that would be worse than the hangover itself.”

sensing the younger’s desire to change the subject along with the way he drops her gaze, circling her and the couch, she falls silent for a moment. “aw, you’re so close to 200.” she comments with a soft, though somewhat sad, smile of her own. “what would you wish for on a birthday as large as 186 though?” she questions, resting her head on her hand as she watches jinwoo pace. “i mean, i have something in mind already, but i’m interested to hear your thoughts.”

zihuan does not consider himself a petty person – far from, actually. he rarely takes offense, rarely holds a grudge; really, it’s one of his very few positives.

so the reason why he’s standing here in front of his neighbor’s door, bag of groceries in hand, is not because he’s hung up over the elevator incident. oh, no. he’s here because he thinks it’ll be amusing to spend the rest of his days making this kid’s life a living hell – just because he wants to.

his forearm is leaning against the frame when the door opens to reveal @meixfey. perfect. “hey.” it’s a casual greeting. casual, like the way his eyes leave her face to slowly rake down her slim form, pausing only briefly at her waist before flickering back up. casual, like the way the corner of his mouth creases ever so slightly to form that shadow of interest.

interest that does not lend itself to the words that follow:

“my stove isn’t working.” it is, but she doesn’t need to know that. “vintage gas, pesky lil thing. mind if i use yours? i’ll be quick, pinky promise.”

mei doesn’t often have visitors; typically, it’s her doing the visiting. (emergency sessions, emergency house calls, keeping the peace somehow between what sometimes feels the world- her small little piece of it, at least.) it keeps her going nonetheless, gives a chance for her to somewhat savor the downtime between it all, dressed casually with a decorative wine glass full of what she can pretend is wine- the crimson color almost a definitive match to a finely aged bottle of the real beverage she’s sure she has somewhere from her time in italy, but still does the job of simply taking the edge off of the day.

what doesn’t help, however, is an unsolicited knock on the door, and the tall, slender not-so-stranger that leans against the door-frame as if he were hung there just before she opened it. zihuan greets her, if anything a little smugly, and she doesn’t miss the way his gaze wanders for just a moment, raising a brow wordlessly.

“your stove..” mei repeats for just a moment, as if she were asking about the weather as if it were behaving suspiciously pleasant for a day when rain was forecast. she contemplates, just a moment, before stepping out of the way and opening the door further, her glass now ignored on the coffee table in front of the chair she had been lounging in.

“as long as you don’t ruin any of my cookware,” she responds, making a sweeping gesture as if the apartment’s kitchen was any more grand than what zihuan’s own must look like. “it’s a copper set, and not very easy to replace.” another poignant pause of her own follows, slight discomfort at his presence, though it wasn’t in her to decline what appeared to be a simple request. “i thought most people your age would prefer to order in if a stove broke,” she teases lightheartedly.

the buzzer rings through the apartment and his insides curl up in agony.

vampire hangovers aren’t the greatest, really. jinwoo is lying flat on the ground when the sound echoes, as he was trying to find the coolest spot in the house where he could still get a little bit of sunshine on his skin, just enough to warm him up and react to the werewolf blood still in his system. the best cure was to ache in some other way, he had found out, and it worked for a while. but then the damned buzzer went off, and his brain screamed inside his skull.

he groaned as loudly as possible as he got up to answer it. the name that followed made him almost sigh his lungs out. “yeah, let her up, but tell her to knock instead of ringing the doorbell”, he replied in a gnarl, and then plopped down on the couch, wearing nothing but sweater pants.

“it’s open,” he made sure to put as much disdain in his voice as possible as the knock inevitably came. “make yourself at home, miss mei. there’s fresh packets in the fridge; please, help yourself.” he barely lifts his head to look at her, instead staring at the ceiling as if the answer to the meaning of life is cemented up there. “to what do i owe the pleasure of your visit?”

over the centuries, mei is sure she’s come across nearly every type of personality type, and her pseudo-fledgling’s own way of handling them. playing peacemaker isn’t all-too-unfamiliar to her anyway, after all, it is why her homeland once sought her for a council seat of her own. (she’s not quite a fan of serving so publicly- of risking the unlife she has, just for a bit of renown; she’ll make her own, someday.) perhaps rather unsurprisingly, she finds herself at jinwoo’s doorstep, poised to play the ever-familiar role of peace keeper again, for kijung’s sake.

“ah,” she can’t help but allow the exclamation to escape her lips as she notices jinwoo’s state, both of undress and his appearance after a fight she’s still trying to understand the reasoning behind. her gaze sweeps across the room for a moment, taking in the surroundings before she sits on the edge of the couch, “really, you don’t have to use niceties to ploy me.” mei sighs, her closer look at jinwoo revealing what she knew, but had hoped against. “i came to see the damage,” the elder sighs, “kijung is.. not my responsibility, but he is in a way.” the sentiment is meant more that even though there’s no need to, mei feels singlehandedly responsible for at least half (often more) of kijung’s actions, even the worse ones.

“is there anything i can?” she inquires with another glance around the living space. “i don’t think trading one pain for another will actually help that.”

hello all! i’m super excited to be here, and present the lovely queen mei! she is a chinese master vampire at 802 years old, and her ability is memory manipulation, which she currently puts to good use as a trauma therapist! (and i mean.. other hires... a gal’s gotta rake in dough). she was turned somewhat late in life, at the age of 32, having had a family of her own and several children- which leads me tooooo the fact that she is somewhat of a fledgling adoption extraordinaire. @feykijung is one of her first that she took under her care!

i am very much still working on getting her pages set up but i would LOVE to plot with anyone and everyone that might be interested! mei is overall a kind person, even though she seems rather ‘eh’ about the more mundane things. so i suppose.. like this if you’d be interested and i’ll find my way to you
