But with Gauguin’s impending arrival in Arles, Van Gogh started to idealize the place and he got carried away with his imagination.

But isn’t it true that this garden has a funny sort of style that means that you can very well imagine the Renaissance poets, Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio, strolling among these bushes on the flowery grass?  (Letter 689 of September 26, 1888)
