Urban Superhumans
1. Inspiration
I have always been inspired by abstract collage in any form. The artist who I look up to is Hanna Hoch, who experiments by incorporating collage in various ways. In this collage, I used animals because I have been learning about species in the environment. Additionally, I used words to describe today's most popular topics like fashion, art, adventures, movies, and more. I decided to combine these two ideas in this collage on a canvas.
2. Percolation
I spent a few days thinking of ideas for this final project. As I compiled all the ideas and put them together, some of the ideas were written down to get more inspiration. I decided to use animals and phrases to express my ideas in this collage.
3. Preparation
To prepare for this project I refined my idea, and decided what materials I wanted to work with. I decided to work with a collage on a canvas. I used materials like paint, magazines, glue, canvas, and scissors.
4. Creation
First, I painted the background of the canvas with a dark color, then cut all the pieces from magazines, assembled the panels and styled them on the canvas. I used one of the pieces to give the collage a 3-D look, and then applied white paint to make the canvas stand out more.
Urban Superhumans
My art is a way for me to express what I am interested in. It also expresses what I see in today's society and in popular culture as a whole. It is imperative to emphasize that in my abstract collage on canvas, I incorporate animals and phrases which relate to today's popular culture and I use paint to add a more three-dimensional texture to the work. Using words that describe animals and modern culture, I have created a collage that illustrates two concepts, namely animals and modern culture. With my art work Urban Superhumans, I am exploring culture today and relating to it in a more abstract manner than I would normally do. It is a general term to describe popular culture as a whole that has access to and appeals to the masses.
Strange Beauty
Hanna Hoch
1929
Photographic collage on coloured paper
Hanna Hoch is an inspiring German Dada artist, who is known for photomontage, collages, and other amazing works. Furthermore, she was very passionate about the portrayal of the "new woman". She utilized themes such as political discourse, androgyny, and reversing gender roles while creating many of her art works. Therefore, Hanna Hoch's artwork was extremely distinctive. Her art work is inspiring to many people, especially feminists like herself. Additionally, she also uses surrealism/abstract styles in her works to remove real world imagery. This was well known in her works, especially in her collages, which were unique and very expressive. With "Srange Beauty", she shows a woman's body in a very distinctive way, in contrast to the way society typically depicts it.ention of many, because it is portratyed in a very odd way. I think this is an interesting perspective she expresses towards observers. Hannah's art reflects her personality and her beliefs. I am inspired in many ways by her work and many others as well. When compared to other artists, she gives observers a very different way to perceive her artwork. Basically, Hoch's work represents the freedom of expressing yourself in a way that can represent any belief or idea that may be meaningful for you. Those ideas are also conveyed to others. In addition to helping you grow, art also allows you to inspire others and yourself with no limitations. Art has been incredibly influential through out many years, and today we use it in many different ways that are helpful to us.
Writing, Thinking, and Looking Critically
By "not painting from sketches, but direct," Jackson Pollock transitioned from studying with Thomas Hart Benton and incorporating abstract imagery in his paintings to removing all imagery from his famous "drip" paintings. He had a very unique style, he called "the nonsense way," to make art, in contrast to conventional techniques. He would usually paint on the floor, with limited materials, and materials that are not usually used for artwork. He worked on his famous paintings to express his feelings, instead of illustrating them. Jackson used no limits while making his paintings. He would get lost in the chaos and express his emotion through these specific techniques for his paintings. He created artworks that were one of a kind, and were appreciated by many in a positive way. Some described his work negatively because of the chaos and disorganization, but that is what made it stand out from everyone else's. Jackson artworks are awe-inspiring because of the extent of the limitations on his paintings. He expressed his feelings in a way that were not visible, removing imagery from his artwork completely. He became one of the most prestigious artists at some point thanks to this work.
Indian Art - Buddhism
Suhas Roy
Buddha
2000-2009
"The dark side of humanity and cruelty is what leads me in my search of the unknown."
"Drops of Silence"
Suhas Roy is one of the most influential figures in Indian modern art. He expresses the religion of Indian Buddhism in his art work. Indian Buddhism is based on the teachings of Gautama Buddha who was deemed an awakened one. To achieve enlightenment, they practice meditation, spirituality, physical labor, and ethical behavior. In his work on paper, charcoal, and oil pastel, he expresses his tardiness and importance of traditions he practiced.
Sleeping Christ Child with Mary and Joseph
Italian
Oil on Wood
1578 - 1615
A large collection of Italian and Flemish baroque paintings represented Ringling's wealth. This specific painting was collected to illustrate depictions of a sleeping Christ child, evoking thoughts of the after death on the cross. It is a rare way to portray private devotion for a collector gallery in such a horizontal format, which conveys a sense of private devotion for the gallery. Moreover, it illustrates religious beliefs, incorporates artistic imagery, and edifies the soul. A very striking and outstanding painting that attracts the attention of the public, including John Ringling.
Visual Analysis
Yves Tanguy (French, 1900-1955)
Date: 1935
Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: Image: 31 3/4 x 27 7/16 in. (80.6 x 69.7 cm)
Frame: 36 1/2 × 30 1/16 × 1 3/4 in. (92.7 × 76.4 × 4.4 cm)
Yves Tanguy is an artist born in Paris, France, on January 5, 1900. He was in the navy before he decided to become a painter. He was introduced to surrealism at the time. He then discovered his style of art, which was surrealistic painting that was infused with automatism. This particular painting caught my attention. Les Nouveaux Nomades was one of his many collections. In order to create this painting, Yves used oil on a canvas with color applied to a solid surface. He used value in this painting, by adding light colors in the top background area and the very dark colors at the bottom. There is a high intensity of dark color at the bottom of the painting. It has characteristics of a landscape and a human figure that are shown in a way where they are virtually undetectable with a very light value of white. In addition, he adds shapes to the bottom part of the painting, giving the painting a 3-D appearance. Some of the shapes are taller and shorter to convey that 3-D effect. He also incorporated unity in his painting and variety at the bottom with the repetition of the shapes. In the painting you can see a positive space with a faint human figure at the top and shapes at the bottom. In addition, there is negative space, which is the background that lends the painting a very abstract look. Furthermore, Yves also uses the formulas of land perspective, light, and shadow to create illusions of depth. This specific artwork is balanced by all of the details in the painting, it makes the artwork feel stable. This artwork is very abstract, and caught my attention. I felt alone when I saw this painting. There are very light and dark colors in an open space with a few figures and a faint human figure. They have very different perspectives. There is a feeling of loss in it because of the figure and because of the way he depicted this landscape. It conveys a sense of imagination of that landscape and describes conditions that may or may not have existed. I personally enjoyed analyzing this painting. This is why Yves' paintings are popular. It expresses a sense of spontaneous, dramatic imagery, and the exploration of things that aren't always what they seem are some of the messages this artist conveys with his artwork. Yves and similar artists that use abstract art and surrealism really appeal to me. The type of art work they produce gives you the freedom to explore it and give it a meaning of your own, while it expresses a range of emotions. They express their beliefs, concerns in this artwork in ways that are relevant to today's society in a creative way.

JOURNALING –
Unity and Variety - these two elements work together separately creating a feeling of wholeness.
Symmetrical and Asymmetrical - these are two different elements that are used in different ways, symmetrical is identical to the other side of the artwork. Asymmetrical does not have both identical sides in the art work.
Directional Forces - is to help the eye guide them with directional implied lines, they also include similar or adjacent forms to influence the way we interpret the art work.
Emphasis and Subordination - these are two important elements artists use in their work, emphasis is a method used by the artist to draw attention to certain areas with bright colors, large size, and high contrast. Subordination is used to give less attention to certain areas of the art work, by using color, placement, and smaller sizes.
Repetition and Rhythm - These two elements are similar but very different, repetition is when there is reappearance of the same visual elements the artist used this delivers unity and flow in the artwork. Rhythm is used by using a repetition of the same dominant elements in the art work.
Scale and Proportion - these two elements may work together well, but are different scales relating to the size of one thing to another. Proportion is relation to the size making up the whole and to one another.

CONNECTING ART TO YOUR WORLD –
Any shade of green has always intrigued me, I love the intensity of certain shades of green. I didn’t realize for a very long time that green was my favorite color, it was quite funny. I found out by realizing how many of my things were in different shades of green. A lot of my friends would always point out the excessiveness of all the things that were green in my room, clothes, objects, colors that I own, and even the color of my nails. I also think that green is a pretty cool color because it is related to growth, nature, and peace. I am very passionate about nature and growth, which I am doing all the time at this very moment. Even though I love all the shades, I tend to go for shades of green that have a darker value. I even tried out very saturated shades of green, and it was still very beautiful. This is why I choose green as my “color scheme” for my life.
