XIII | 19 October 2019 . This last photo memory (maybe?) features senior defender Emily Stout at pregame, 19 October 2019, when hosting Franklin College. . I rushed to the sidelines to be ready for the senior ceremony and drew a Canon camera from its bag, hurrying to photograph anything and everyone around me. I hurried too quickly to correct my exposure before seeing Emily leap into Nadia’s arms for a big hug. . So I wonder, would it have been worth stopping to fix my exposure and lose the moment, or grab the opportunity without fixing the exposure? Well, as much as I don’t like this picture being overexposed, I think there’s enough detail to constitute it as good enough. . What’s one last thing you’d like to say in tribute to our seniors? — To take these photos, I rented from @connor_carr_photography a Canon EOS 5D Mark III and a Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 STM prime lens. . I was mistakenly overexposed at ISO 3200, a focal length of 50 mm, with the aperture wide-open at f / 1.8, and shutter too fast at 1/8000 sec., in all three photos. . I did some Lightroom magic to adjust the exposure and tone down the highlights (which are pretty much blown). Also, I unfortunately wrote the photo in JPG format instead of RAW, which would have afforded me the ability to fix the issue (urghhh). XII | 25 October 2019 Today’s photo memory was delayed by some difficult circumstances I’ve been dealt in the last several hours, so my apologies. I was posted on an assignment by the Andersonian to photograph D’Anjrae Allen, the senior AUWS goalkeeper who had been named defender of the week three times in a row for performing well in the early conference season. So I attended her goalkeeper training session on 25 October 2019 and waited for when she’d turn around for a ball. My patience paid off when I caught her reaching against the net to maneuver the ball. I believed the composition was spot on, relating to the golden triangle rule of compositional theory (and even the rule of thirds). In the Andersonian Q&A by Jordan Yaney, later published on 30 October, Dee had this to say about what her team meant to her, when asked in the interview. “Our concept this year is FAMILY. That stands for friendship, accountability, mentality, intentionality, labor and “What’s your why?’ ... ‘Why do you play?’ ‘What pushes your to keep going?’ We are pretty much one big family as a team. We are always there for each other. There has been a lot of things that our team has gone through, with injuries, deaths in the family or other things like that. We really came together well as a family and are there for each other whenever we need it.” Then she was asked why she hadn’t conceded a goal early in the conference season. “I give it to my defense. ... We have a really strong back line and they’ve been great ... I also give a lot of credit to our offense, too because they possess the ball so well during the game. ... XI | 11 September 2019 “Tough times don’t last, but tough people do,” said J.D. Bembry in our Virtual Chapel today. During this challenging time, hearing that made me think of two things. (1) How strong we have to be, not just for ourselves but, for each other; and (2) Emily Buchman’s style on the field. Just notice the wrapping around her wrist, that says, “strength.” It isn’t just written; it’s demonstrated in how she plays. It’s demonstrated in how she plays with devotion and determination. Her tough style is quintessential to the AUWS tradition of being strong for each other—your team, your family, and its objective. In such a time as this, we need to be strong for each other. X | 19 October 2019 Today’s AUWS photo memory features senior defender and team captain Bailey Dornbusch leading her team into the second half of their homecoming game against Franklin College, 19 October 2019. The homecoming game was scoreless at the half. Though it ended in a 0-1 loss, the game, like any other, saw solid leadership from the AUWS captain, her back line, teammates on-and-off the field, and coaches. IX | 3 September 2019 Today’s photo memory features senior midfielder Betsy Balish in the starting lineup from AUWS v Ball State Women’s Soccer Club, 3 September 2019. It was everybody’s first game of the season (if you will call it that), and Betsy and her team looked happy to kick it off. Do you remember how you felt about your first game on the field? So I positioned myself at an angle in order to take advantage of the light, while isolating Betsy in a somewhat shallow depth of field. VIII | 3 September 2019 Today’s AUWS photo memory features senior midfielder Morgan Reed with her teammate, forward Jessica Pulaski, on the sidelines before kicking off against Ball State Women’s Soccer Club at Macholtz Stadium, 3 September 2019. Showcasing the joy and sisterhood which fundamentally animates the AUWS culture, this photo quickly became a favorite among players, fans and coaches. When I took the first photo, I actually had no idea just how impactful it was until I saw it later that night in post-processing. I later discovered the second photo and thought it was worth showing, too. I followed the team over to the sidelines as they finished their pregame warmup and started searching for interpersonal engagement among the players. Photographic conditions were ideal; the evening sun was setting right behind us, its rays softly peering over the tree line. A beautiful, warm glow of light settled on the players as they stood on the sidelines. Anytime I saw a smile, I quickly shifted, adjusted and focused my camera, hoping to catch something special. When my attention pivoted to Morgan and Jessica, I was so caught up in hoping my exposure was correct that I didn’t actually see what was happening. But when I opened the file later in post, I discovered how amazing a moment I actually drew from that evening. I used a Nikon D90, fitted with a Tamron AF 28–300mm F3.5–6.3 Macro lens. Using such an old APS-C camera (and a really old, slow lens), I believe this photo proves to aspiring photographers that you don’t need the newest, biggest, most expensive camera to take a great photo. A camera is merely a tool; you are the artist. If you’re so caught up in what camera you want or think you need, then you’re not being an artist. Use what you’ve got and test your limits. That’s how you take pictures. VII | 19 October 2019 Today’s AUWS photo memory (which was chosen by random probability* because I had a hard time deciding which photo to use) features senior defender Bailey Scahill, at the 19 October 2019 senior ceremony, when we hosted Franklin College. Before Bailey gathered with her family for a photo, I shot her hugging each coach along the line (which I did for every senior). I waited behind Coach Myhre, expecting a good shot of Bailey hugging her. I remember feeling humbled as each senior showed their appreciation for the coaches and wanted to photograph it. VI | 19 October 2019 Today’s AUWS photo memory features Ali Zoller at pregame of our homecoming match against Franklin College, on 19 October 2019. I recall hunting for a good picture as a observed the sidelines, when I noticed Nadia Bentley and Tori Baver heading toward Ali. Then I anticipated they were about to share a quick and special moment. Just then I adjusted my focus point as Nadia paused and Ali reached for a hug. When I saw this later in post processing, I knew it was a keeper, seeing that this was more than I had anticipated. Then Ali quickly stepped toward Tori and leaned in, surprising her with a kiss on the cheek. I remember including this image in my AUWS Banquet Photographic Presentation, back in December. V | 3 September 2019 Today’s photo memory goes back to 3 September 2019 when we hosted the Ball State Women’s Soccer Club, featuring Kelli Mueller, whose AUWS journey, I think, demonstrates what it means to be Family Strong. That, if you love your teammates as much as you love your sport, you never give up, no matter what. With or without a jersey, on or off the field, you give your team your all, not for yourself but for the team’s objective. IV | 11 September 2019 Today’s photo memory features senior AUWS goalkeeper D’Anjrae Allen, walking off Fridley Field at halftime against Trine Univeristy, 19 September 2019. It was a hot day and we were up 1-0 at the half, thanks to Allen’s 22’ save and Hannah Planck’s 32’ goal from distance. I rushed to get in front of the team as they were heading for the cool shade, to get a candid perspective of the players off the field. Here, I focused in on Dee as her teammates—like Elizabeth Graham and Jessica McNeil—were near. After Elizabeth’s low-five, Jessica caught up to put a smile on Dee’s face, which seemed to be something she’s good at. I admire the support system at AUWS, and it’s evident in these photo memories how effective that is. For all three photos I used a Nikon D7500 fitted with an 18–140 mm f/3.5–5.6 variable aperture kit lens (yes, I know what you photographers are thinking—Really? A kit lens? For sports photography?) Yes, a kit lens. It was all I had to work with at the moment. But good photos are made, not by cameras or lenses, but by artists. Exposures for each photo— Photo 1. III | 19 October 2019 Today’s AUWS photo memory features Courtney Maher, a senior defender, with her team’s starting lineup for their homecoming match against Franklin College, on 19 October 2019. For Courtney, being part of AUWS meant more than playing with a jersey on; it was being in uniform with a team whose family bond built you a home away from home. It meant being hand-in-hand with a group of ladies who were always there for you and made memories you’d never forget. But in times like this, amid our social isolation, Courtney reminds us that, it’s the precious memories we made together that keep us together, even when we’re apart. Especially the silly memories—like singing and dancing before a game or on long bus rides—that keep us together in spirit. II | 11 September 2019 IN THIS EPISODE OF GAME DAY: (It’s actually a photo memory of SAMO at halftime, AUWS v Trine, on 11 September 2019.) Will SAMO’s leadership at halftime rectify defensive posture? ... Will her motivation inspire her teammates to fight the blazing 89F heat? (Yes, I checked the weather records to verify the temperature.) ... Will her team return, reinvigorated, ready to finish strong? Indeed. AUWS finished 2-1 and put up with one of the hottest games of the season, sending Trine home with a loss.
