"WHY HAVE YOU SUMMONED ME HERE?"
I WROTE ANOTHER FIC WITH MORPHEUS
(this fic is inspired by the episode from season 2 called "The Song of Orpheus, so it contains spoilers of it)
Attending his son's wedding wasn't in the King of Dreams' plans, but upon meeting Orpheus's fiancée, Eurydice, he realized the reason for the wedding.
They made a perfect couple; they connected in a way that reminded Morpheus of his past relationship with Queen Nada of the First People.
Despite the thoughts swirling around his mind, he forced himself to focus on his son and be present on his special day.
It was so important that all the Eternals were there: Desire, Delirium, Destruction, Death, Despair, and even Fate, even though he didn't like attending those kinds of events.
To be honest, Morpheus wasn't keen on it either, but since it was his only son's wedding, he felt it was only right to show up.
Orpheus approached him as soon as he saw him arrive and expressed his joy and excitement about the marriage in effusive words that Morpheus understood perfectly.
There were times when he saw in him a reflection of what he had once been, which only made their bond grow stronger.
After speaking with him, he went to speak with the rest of his brothers, who conveyed their best wishes for him and his future wife, Eurydice.
The ceremony was a beautiful event surrounded by friends from all over the world and a few friends from Athens whom Orpheus had invited due to their close friendship over the years.
After the ceremony, the banquet began, and then the guests dispersed into several groups, at least one of whom had brought an instrument whose music would liven up the rest of the evening.
Morpheus watched as those mortals whose existences lasted less than the blink of an eye enjoyed the time they had left more intensely than he, who had all eternity ahead of him.
He felt someone looking at him and tilted his head to meet your intense green eyes.
You were wearing a dress of fine fabric the color of your eyes and a crown of white flowers on your head.
Your chocolate-brown hair fell in soft waves over your shoulders.
Morpheus noticed the way you clenched your fists tightly at your sides, as if you were feeling nervous or overwhelmed by something he couldn't quite place.
Then without a word, you turned and started walking toward the forest, and the King of Dreams found himself drawn to you like a magnet, as if you were a force of nature created to attract beings like him.
The soft sound of birds singing in the lower branches of the trees around him briefly dulled Morpheus's senses.
He stared intently at the leafy trees and the beautiful clearing bathed in moonlight in front of him.
He wondered then where you were, and why he had felt such a deep need to follow you.
Perhaps Desire and Despair were unwittingly using their gifts on him.
Then, as if Fate had intended it to happen, he saw you beside one of the trees, watching the intense reflection of the moon on the foliage.
Morpheus watched you silently for a few moments, realizing that, for the first time in his long, immortal life, he didn't know what his next step should be.
"Dream," you said, feeling his powerful presence behind you. "You've followed me."
"It seemed that was what you wanted," he whispered, sliding down to stand beside you. "Who are you? Or rather, what are you?"
"I am nothing and no one, and at the same time I am everything," you explained, turning to look at him. "I am the reason the moon shines so brightly tonight and the Earth continues to revolve around the sun."
"You are not an endless" he decreed, scrutinizing you with his gaze. "You are the daughter of Delphi" he realized then, making you smile.
"I am," you affirmed. "It is a pleasure to finally meet you, King of Dreams." You nodded in respect. "My father spoke to me a lot about you," you murmured. "But that was a long time ago." you gave him a sad smile. "Your sister took him one warm summer afternoon while she was writing her memoirs by the riverbank," he whispered. "I still haven't thanked her for taking him in such a way…"
"Painless," he finished for you. You nodded.
"Yes," you smiled. "Will you thank her for me in case we don't meet today?"
"I give you my word," he assured you, looking at you with equal parts intensity and delicacy. "Why have you summoned me here, Daughter of Delphi?"
"I didn't call for you, King of Dreams," you whispered, shifting your gaze to the moon in front of you. "Perhaps you longed for a moment alone as much as I did, and fate meant for us to choose the same place."
Morpheus couldn't help but wonder if his brother had known about that meeting before it happened.
Even if he had, he wouldn't have told him, what with all that messing with the laws of time and other problems that weren't his responsibility to deal with.
"On," he agreed with a small smile. "It's not bad here," he commented. "It's a quiet place, ideal for relaxing and thinking."
"Yes, it is," you murmured, agreeing with him. "I come here often to do those three things in particular." You smiled, tilting your head to look at him. "We have more in common than I thought."
He nodded slightly before looking at the moon again.
The two of you stared at it in silence, the sounds of the forest filling the space between you.
For a moment, Morpheus felt at peace, and he wondered if what he was feeling was love.
That feeling of being in the company of another person and not feeling the need to speak to fill the space between you.
A feeling that, ever since his relationship with Nada, he thought he would never feel again, but when you turned to him and smiled, he knew there was no turning back.
