Dancer Melody Magpie incorporates strange, Internet-centric themes into the traditional strip-tease stylings of burlesque, including an homage to Lil Bub.
So happy to say that Dr.Sketchy's RVA is back up and running. I'm proud to announce that we have a new venue- Fallout! It seems like a perfect fit, and I hope to see a lot of familiar and new faces when Dr.Sketchy's returns on October 28th!
I can't even begin to describe how excited i am! Not only do we have a new hope, but we are welcoming the lovely and talented Lula Houp-Garou to Richmond. She'll be bring classic Halloween pinup of the 20's and 30's to Dr.Sketchy's, and I can't wait to see what she has up her sleeve! We will be giving away a pair of tickets to the Richmond Burlesque Revue as part of our drawing challenges, so the winner will have the opportunity to see Lula twice that week.
*As proof of my excitement, I just had to proofread this blog and edit the amount of exclamation points I used. I was just so darn excited I used one for damn near every sentence! (!)
Been crafting all night!
I'm back!
Yes I'm back on tumblr, and I'm going to finally try and make use of this thing! For those of you who don't know me, I'm Melody Magpie, a burlesque dancer, hula hooper, artist, and headmistress of Dr.Sketchy's RVA. I started this tumblr as a way to reflect on my journey as a burlesque dancer, and now I am actually forcing myself to do some of that reflecting!
I can't think of a better way to start a new project than with a message of positivity, so I am going to write little bit about what I am currently grateful for.
I am grateful that my art form has given me the opportunity to travel, see new places, and meet some amazing people. I never really made it a point to go out and travel much before I did burlesque, but now I'm sort of addicted to it! I want to travel and perform in as many places as I can. I am so grateful in be involved in an art form that allows me to see the world!
I am grateful that my burlesque community in Richmond, VA is currently exploding with talent! I started going to burlesque shows 4 years ago, and I was blown away by the talent I saw. I'm still blown away by the talent in my own community, and I keep seeing people new to the scene who really bring in a lot of good energy and skill. It is really inspiring! The most amazing thing is, these super talented folks are almost always humble, willing to share their knowledge, and a joy to be around!
I am grateful for all of the lovely audiences that I have performed for and the people that support and encourage me. I wouldn't be performing if it weren't for you! I means the world to me that there are people that will come to my shows and cheer for me and come talk to me after the show.
The truth is, I have been feeling pretty negative lately. Quite a few things are stewing in my mind that are getting in the way of me really enjoying what I do. These things need to be addressed, but I do feel that focusing on the positive and remembering the reasons I do perform come a long way in helping me come back recharged, inspired, and focused.

A couple of years from now, I will be a teacher. My dad has told me I shouldn’t be out, because I’ll get thrown out of my teaching position by kids’ parents. So, kindly reblog to let me know if you would let your kid be taught by a trans* person. I’m hoping to build some confidence for myself.
