more than halfway into heretics of dune and I'm having a hard time finding the value in this story. someone who enjoys this book please explain the appeal to me, your perspective would be greatly appreciated.

my best friend says me talking about the saga is feeling like a really long video essay, but at this point she's wondering why I keep reading and right now so am I. so far I've had a lot of complaints and critique but I've always found some value in the story and/or themes explored, but this book is testing me in several ways

(note: I listened to the whole series on audiobook) I had a similar reaction at first too. Heretics the furthest a reader has ventured from the original story and characters and can like the start of a separate thing, yk? It's the first book post-golden "golden path." The last two books back up of the philosophical arguments posed by Leto in god emperor and it's fun to watch it play out through the perspective of the sisterhood who are more willing to criticize him. I think it's a good juxtaposition since you're literally god POV 90% of god emperor.

I also love Odrade and Teg! They embody importance of love. (it sounds cheesy but it's true) The whole series is about love at the end of the the day tbh and I think it's really beautiful. It took 4 books to set up some of the most profound emotional payoffs of the series.

(oh! heretics and chaperhouse are so horny it's hard to believe sometimes. wildly entertaining.)

so I'm finishing dune messiah and I can't wait for it to end and children of dune to start. Paul is so fucking depressed but he's still insufferable... I feel bad for Chani though. and also it's funny he didn't know about Ghanima.

also on the topic of siona i have to say i really love the dynamic between her and leto. of course siona hates him and rightly sees him as the embodiment of all that's oppressive and tyrannical in the universe, and leto is sometimes utilitarian and harsh in his willingness and readiness to discard her and manufacture another "chosen one" should she fail to prove herself up to par for his plans, but nevertheless there's such a sense of expectation and hope and anticipation to him whenever he talks or thinks about her. he's kind of like a tiger mom on steroids when it comes to her. that moment in the desert after he ods her on melange and then entreats "fight it, siona!" as he cradles her in his flesh and she struggles there to hang onto life has never quite left me
