Happy Sherlock Holmes day to those who celebrate!!!
yeah
One of the finest and most beloved Watsons ever to grace the screen has passed away. David Burke was 91 years old, just shy of his 92nd birthday, and he is survived by his wife Anna Calder-Marshall and his son Tom Burke.
By all accounts, he was a gentleman and a wonderful human being. He could have stayed on to play Watson much longer, which would have made many of us very happy, but he chose to leave the show to be nearer to his family, especially since Tom was very young at the time.
His was not the first intelligent and competent Watson, but this version marked a turning point in mainstream depictions, from comedic sidekick to a hero in his own right.
RIP, dear sir. You will be missed. Thank you for everything.

To read a longer and moving tribute, please check out the I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere website: https://www.ihearofsherlock.com/2026/05/david-burke-first-watson-of-granada-era.html. The tribute includes a link to the interview that the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes Podcast conducted with David and his wife a few years ago.
They are informing him of something 👀.
together or not at all!!!!!
Shenanigans afoot
[ID: A digital pencil sketch of Holmes and Watson shown from the shoulders up. Watson is side-eyeing Holmes with a scowl. Holmes is sporting a mischievous and very self-satisfied smile.]
Things I hate in Sherlock Holmes adaptations
Third sibling OCs
Sherlock being conventionally attractive and not even slightly balding
Watson being smh ugly
Watson being an idiot
Mycroft and Sherlock hating each other
Mycroft not being smarter than Sherlock
Mycroft being skinny
Irene Adler being Sherlock's love interest
Irene's fiance getting erased from existence
Moriarty being obsessed with Sherlock
Moriarty considering Sherlock equal to himself
Sherlock being straight
Mary getting erased from existence or completely mischaracterized
Moriarty being written as just "an evil guy" and the writers not giving a shit about his actual personality
Watson hating Sherlock smh??
Sherlock edit from my TikTok 😛
God i love clive merrison holmes hes the best holmes to me🥹
I saw someone on here say the Sherlock Holmes fandom is simultaneously the smallest and largest fandom they’ve been in and you know what that’s so accurate. Like the Holmes fandom on here is so small and cozy that someone can pop in to say hi and all five of us can wave from the sofa where we’re all sitting together to watch Granada Holmes and admire each other’s book sets, but then one person will say something really funny and suddenly the walls vanish in a massive containment breach and there are thousands of us all laughing in the shared joy of these iconic fictional characters, and then the walls and confines of time and space go on melting and melting in the face of the influence of such beloved stories until the cheerful crowds are too enormous to be numbered and teenagers who have been reading the stories on their phones to pass the time on the school bus are shaking hands with Victorians who have the latest copy of the Strand tucked under the arms and all smiling at the same classic lines. And anyway I just think that’s neat.
They're so cute I CAN'T ( I love them so much)
Aaaaand we're back!
heheheh
JEREMY BRETT and DAVID BURKE as SHERLOCK HOLMES and DR JOHN WATSON in THE BLUE CARBUNCLE (1984)
He is so elegant, gentle and pretty. I 100% understand why Moran works for him and is so loyal to him. I would, too. I really like Moriarty
(Note: this doesn't mean I like every adaptation of Moriarty. I do really like the game of shadows one)
