Plowing….

The Royal Australian Navy Adelaide-class guided-missile frigate HMAS Melbourne (FFG 05) literally plows through long-wave ocean swells.

Even though the ocean looks relatively calm in the photos above, ocean swells generated by storms….often many thousands of miles/kilometers away….can create potentially hazardous conditions for ships at sea….ships of any size.

It’s most prudent to tackle these ocean swells by heading almost directly into them….taking them just off either side of your bow. If your ship gets into the trough of these swells….with the swells coming at you from the side….your vessel can roll dangerously from side to side. Taking the swells from behind can also lead to serious loss of ship maneuverability.

Accordingly, professional mariners – commercial, military and private – will routinely check not only local ocean weather conditions along their track….but also consider any impact from storms that could be on the other side of a great ocean.
