Non-POC can never truly understand the implications of blackface, so they have no place to tell POC what they should and should not be offended or hurt by. I am glad that RBW and Mamamoo are being educated and realise their mistake. I think that using the term POC in the statement does not necessarily mean that Koreaboo fed it to them. They have native English speakers in RBW (e.g. eSNa) who may have translated what RBW wanted to say as I'm pretty sure there isn't a phase akin to POC in Korean.
i agree wholeheartedly with your first part, thank you. i think my rationale was that if RBW had people in their team that knew terms like POC, i’d like to think that they would also understand the implications of blackface and told them to stop. unless they weren’t informed of it? which i suppose is a possibility.
either way, i’m giving them the benefit of the doubt, and hoping this incident at least gives mmm/rbw a greater understanding of the issue.
[whispers] i am becoming somewhat of a massive sejeong stan this blog might not be 99% mmm anymore sry
I feel that your rants are also kind of simplistic? The world isn't a place where you can force an understanding for racism onto other people by constantly mentioning it. Racism will only die when we don't give it an inch of ground anymore. That goes for reverse racism, as well. Writing "I'm tired of Kpop making excuses" etc is really indecent towards all the individuals that understand the problems of racism. Also, not every mention of "black" is racist per-se. I feel this is also important.
My “rants” are not meant to be all encompassing. There’s only so much I can talk about on tumblr without getting into essay length territories.
Reverse racism is not a thing (and pls do not tell me to do smth as asinine as “look it up”). The oppressed cannot be racist to their oppressors. You are confusing racial prejudice with racism.
And I’m also sick of the Not All Kpop or Not All White People argument. It’s annoying and defensive and sidesteps the issue that a lot of individuals are still completely ignorant of the issue.
No one is saying any mention of “black” is racist. That’s ridiculous. But blackface is unarguably racist.
there is an apology from the members on their FB and I believe Twitter that seems genuinely from the members. I would paste it but it's fairly long.
my last post includes my thoughts on it. it’s also a bit long.
Did you see their apology (both Mamamoo's and RBW's)? At least they realised that what they did was incredibly wrong... I'm a moomoo and I don't really know how to feel about it? Idk, they apologised but that doesn't take away the fact that what they did was racist...
so initially i thought the apologies were sketch bc it’s koreaboo and they were sourcing themselves so um, yeah. but then it was officially confirmed by rbw so it’s legit.
the thing is, the way the apologies are phrased sounds like someone who knew more about this topic fed the lines to them. especially this line:
RBW, Inc. will be working with Koreaboo to educate ourselves more on cultural sensitivity and the struggles that the black community and various other POC communities have undergone and continue to go through
there’s no way they came up with that line and the part of “POC communities” themselves. i assume there’s a lot of Koreaboo feeding them what to say happening, which is really sketch.
however, i’ll also give them the benefit of the doubt this time. hopefully they were sincere and genuine with regards to their apology. and hopefully they took the time to really understand the reason why what they did was wrong, so to prevent future happenings from occurring,
"being unintentionally racist is still being racist. your ignorance doesn’t exclude you from racism." Thank you, you couldn't have said this better. This is such a strong point. So many people I know try to use ignorance as an excuse for racism in kpop. They can't seem to grasp that unintentional racism is still racism, regardless of its circumstances (such as ignorance). I can never understand why it's so difficult for people to understand that.
exactly. people take stanning idols to mean that you have to unconditionally accept everything they do. therefore they take the stance of, oh they didn’t know what they were doing was racist, don’t be mean!!!!!! which is an incredibly simplistic view.
it’s important to continuously point out instances of racism and appropriation in kpop and everywhere. it’s not being “annoying” or “whining” or “complaining” to do this. it’s about continuously talking about this topic until finally everyone gets it.
Where are the videos/photos/receipts of mamamoo doing black face?? I've never heard about it
it was during their moosical concert yesterday
idk if you already know, but a k-moomoo talked to staff of rbb and that person said mmm and the directors who did the vcr are all present and they'll discuss the video and the blackface i rlly hope they understand how disrespectful their actions were and apologize publicly
yeah, i’m really glad this issue picked up traction with the kmoomoos. since there’s not much we can do from afar, i’m so grateful that there’s a bunch of kmoomoos taking the initiative to contact rbw.
i’m sure they’ll apologize, but i really hope mmm takes the time to actually understand why it’s wrong. it’s about reflecting and changing your entire perspective. otherwise something similar will just repeat in the future.
i don't know what mamamoo did/said but you international fans should finally respect that they live in korea, not in your country. things that are scandalous in korea might not be a big deal in your country, and the same applies the other way around.
they did full blackface. tell me that’s not racist.
the whole point is, it doesn’t matter if they’re not aware of the racist implications. it’s still racist. you don’t get to casually emulate their “hip hop culture” for your own profit and not also educate yourself on the basics of racism.
