You want to do good things and make everyone listen to your good ideas, but as soon as you force everyone to obey your will, you create a dictatorship. You begin to censor the things you disagree with. Without her memory, Mary loses her identity, her morals, her integrity, and she won’t know the reasons behind her behaviour. She’ll never be able to explain herself to people, connect deeply with them, teach them, she won’t have any anecdotes to ground others in her situation so they understand where she’s coming from with her argument, she won’t be able to convince people to advocate for the same human rights that she fights for if she doesn’t know why she’s doing it, if she doesn’t know why equality hasn’t been accomplished yet. She can’t make educated decisions without knowing what happened in her past. She’ll never know her stories. How can you make decisions for yourself if you don’t know what shaped the person you should be? Mary can’t Obliviate herself, because if she does, she’ll never move on, she’ll trap herself in the past, stuck in a time before every lesson she ever learned. And the reason she learned those lessons was because they mean something to her, something important enough to remember, and she needs them.
