What Buck did with Lucy is nowhere near as bad as what Eddie's doing with Kim for several reasons

Intention - Buck never intended to kiss Lucy, and while that doesn't excuse him, a heat-of-the-moment drunken kiss is a far cry from intentionally lying to a woman about your relationship status, scheduling and going on a date with her, and lying to your friend and kid about your whereabouts

Duration - Buck's romance with Lucy lasted for the duration of that kiss, all of 2 minutes. Even though he didn't tell Taylor until a few weeks later, he didn't do anything else with Lucy. Eddie's relationship with Kim is already lasting longer, given that they went on a whole ass date just the two of them

Honesty - Buck pretty immediately told Hen about the situation, and told Lucy that he had a girlfriend. Yes, he did lie to Taylor for longer than he should have, and that is a bad thing, but he never lied to his friends about it. Eddie didn't have to tell Buck where he was going or what he was doing, no matter how good friends they are, Buck is not entitled to that information. But he also didn't have to lie and say he was on a date with Marisol, possibly putting Buck in an awkward position. (I know Buck could also have put Hen in an awkward position, but Hen at least had the full picture of what was going on.) Eddie essentially asked Buck to lie for him without even telling Buck he was lying.

Responsibility - Eddie is a parent. Anyone he dates, he's not only bringing them into his life but his son's life (as made pretty clear by the fact that he seems to only want to find a new mom for Chris). And anything he does is something his son might pick up on and emulate, for better or for worse. Obviously, Eddie is not an infallible human being, he is going to slip up. But as a parent he has the responsibility to set a good example for his son, especially given Chris's already existing problems with infidelity.

The point is, what Buck did, while it was a bad and hurtful thing, is nowhere near similar to what Eddie is doing, and Buck has every right to call him out on his behavior when he learns what's going on.

I wish the Russos had come out and said this earlier on. Instead of passing Tony’s death off like, “Oh it was the natural end to Tony because he was so selfish at the beginning,” their Entertainment Weekly interview about Tony’s ending actually examines Tony as a character critically–and also admits that he’s the truest hero of them all.

First, they admit it wasn’t easy to kill Tony because many kids look up to him:

In some ways, it seemed like a natural choice. Stark had gone from aloof arms dealer to someone who repeatedly risked his own life to spare others. But it still wasn’t an easy decision, especially given the hope and inspiration Iron Man has provided to fans over the years.

“There are a lot of sick kids who really look up to that character, and it’s hard because we’re trying to tell a story about heroism,” Joe Russo tells EW.

“And sometimes heroism involves doing whatever it takes,” Anthony adds.

Second, they admit Tony was always a hero with a self-sacrificial bent this entire time. His selflessness isn’t something new, but was a character trait that has always been there and had to be respected:

There was a daredevil aspect to Tony Stark, a defiance of danger, a determination — almost a self-destructive impulse — to put himself in harm’s way. Eventually, it was going to end in something he couldn’t walk away from.

“I think in a way Tony Stark was meant to die, and he always knew he was going to die because he could never reconcile that notion in himself of not protecting the universe,” Joe says. “I think that was always a spark in him, always seeing that there was danger coming on the horizon and that someday, he and that danger would meet.”

To the Russos (and many fans), it makes sense that Tony would die defending the world, because there’s no way he’d stand-by–not when he’s been doing it for so long. It’s hard to imagine Tony ever retiring, sitting out the fight, because that’s not what real heroes do. They lay on the wire every time–and that’s what Tony has been doing all along.

And third? They admit Tony was the most formidable of them all–and for the right reason:

This is why Thanos knows who this puny human is in Infinity War. Stark had already made a lot of trouble for him.

“Stark is the most formidable of all of them,” Joe says. “Because of his heart.”

Still wish he hadn’t died, though - the more I think about it, the more on-the-nose that sort of writing seems. When you have a character who flirts with death and seems to want to sacrifice himself every time, do you end up having him sacrifice himself?? Nope. You have him learn death is not the answer - that sometimes LIVING for something greater than you is the answer. The main flaw in the Markus-McFeely script is exactly that. Tony had FOUND his “something greater” — he had become a great husband and father. He had a wife and little girl who needed him. It’s always the middle-aged male writer’s overweening fantasy to have a hero die valiantly for a cause - as in “ooh, that’s the best and highest he could ever hope for.” And yes, Tony died in the midst of highest valor, saving ALL LIFE in the universe (honestly another Big Male Writer Fantasy, smh). And yes, saved his family as well. But the better, more honest and richer ending would have been to let him do that and LIVE, for Pepper and for Morgan. That’s what continues to bother me about his ending. He didn’t HAVE to die. There were a lot of writerly ways he could have survived - maybe injured enough that he had to retire, but so what then? He would have been with his family, still living and learning, instead of just a memory for them. That notion of Death in Valor has been a huge (and fairly stupid) male myth in stories since time immemorial (not to take anything away from real people who’ve died for a cause; it’s just lazy storytelling). It amazes me to see them use such a tired old trope again, after Tony had NEARLY died so many times. Better, smarter, more subversive and twistier writing to have him LIVE.

Yeah, tbh, the more I think about it, the less sense it continues to make. As much as I love Tony now being this Eternal Legend figure in the MCU, the movie starts to unravel the more I think about it.

Like, they’re saying this was the only end for Tony. Because true heroes never stop. True heroes can’t ignore a bad situation. So Tony would have always been fighting. Therefore, retirement is not a viable option for someone like him.

And yet. That’s exactly what they gave Steve. Steve Rogers, who said he hates bullies, Steve who “wishes he could ignore when a situation goes south” but he just can’t, Steve who fought against the wishes of 117 countries because he wanted to be able to help people whenever they needed it without restrictions? This same Steve is going to quietly live a basically fake life in some alternate fantasy world while ignoring reality? Because he deserves “retirement”? Because he “earned” that? And somehow that’s fundamentally different than what Tony deserves or earned?

That’s throwing Steve under the bus as a character while kind of giving a back handed compliment about Tony lol I just.. can’t rationalize it.

And yes, as a narrative choice it is a bit on the nose. People are tired of shock value deaths that don’t hold up within the narrative itself. They bank off the emotion and drama of it overshadowing that it makes little sense under any scrutiny. They wouldn’t have to come out with a million explanations for things after the fact if that wasn’t the case.

I definitely understand that perspective as well. That it seems hypocritical of the Russo Brothers to say, “Tony is too much of a hero to stand aside, so he died a hero,” while also giving Steve (who is literally Mr. I-Can’t-Stand-Aside) a happy, full life retirement storybook ending (nevermind the plotholes and character assassination).

But the reason I think they ultimately made it the way they did (aside from preferring Cap as a character and wanting the “Happy Ending” for him), is that Steve’s nature made writing him out via magical loop hole (time travel) easy.

Steve, like Tony, has been written out of the MCU. LIke. Look at him. He’s so old he can’t possibly fight anymore and will likely die soon. But they did it through an unconventional means: they literally shoveled him through a time portal.

The same could not be done with Tony.

Tony’s life was here in the present/future, while Steve was still a man hung-up on the past. Tony couldn’t be written out of the story with a magical plot device (like an alternate reality or dimension) without it also being as much of a tragedy as his death. No matter what, he was going to get ripped from his family, because Tony’s story was going to be over.

While we could say, “The best ending is that Tony finally learns to hang up the suit for good,” truthfully we know deep-down he’d never fully be able to stand back when bad shit happens. All it would take is one Thanos-sized threat appearing in the future (which will undoubtedly happen again in the MCU) and Tony would be trying to help–whether that was through the use of a remote-controlled Iron Man suit, inventing tech for the Avengers, or suiting up himself. He would–because he has a family (and Earth) to defend. We wouldn’t be fans of him if he gave up.

It was either have Tony retire in the present and truly never really be a presence again in the lives of heroes (in which case he’s relegated to a somewhat forgettable footnote like Clint Barton or just side-eyed for eternity) OR it was have him go out in a blaze of glory while saving the universe.

Because, logistically, they did have a problem with the fact RDJ wouldn’t be as active of a role anymore. Sure, cameos are always possible. But Iron Man would no longer be able to help. And that’s hard to hand-wave away.

This is where the limitations of our reality (actors, contracts, stories as a medium, etc.) conflict with the reality of a fictional universe (wherein Tony should have the peaceful retirement ending, live, and stick around). We couldn’t get both. Like, it sucks, it truly does, but I get it.

Steve got the Happy Ending because there was a way to shoehorn it in for him while simultaneously writing him out of the MCU that wouldn’t have worked similarly for any other character–and, even then, this decision has been regarded as very controversial.

See, that’s the thing: I feel like we could have had both, but didn’t because the Russo’s and M&M decided they wanted the shock value / tearjerker ending and refused to look outside of that box. I feel like there could have been a satisfying resolution for Tony’s arc that didn’t involving him sacrificing himself… again.

Out of all the heroes, Tony’s story has been leading up to retirement. He expressed the desire to settle down with a family. He tried multiple to get out of the superhero game, only to get dragged back in again. Granted, a large part of why he wouldn’t let himself fully retire was because of Thanos and the Big Threat he’s seen coming since 2012, which he finally beat…. But even so, I agree that that’s because it’s not within his character to just sit aside and not help where he can. That’s why we love him. But there are so many things he could do without being right there in the middle of the battle. He could have semi-retired to be with his family, while still quietly helping in the background. He could provide new tech. He could mentor new heroes. Hell, they could have resurrected S.H.E.I.L.D. and made him the new Director.

Wouldn’t it have be great to see his character grow even more by realizing that he can step back and trust the new generation to keep the world safe? That he doesn’t have to shoulder all the responsibility himself? There are so many different options that would feel like a more appropriate and thematic end to his character arc. His presence in future movies wouldn’t be necessary, but the door is open to a reference or a cameo here or there.

The point about Steve’s “shoehorned” ending; I feel like they did exactly that with Tony. Maybe I’m misinterpreting the recent interviews, but it sounds like the Russos and M&M decided that Tony should go out in a blaze of glory and that was the Only Way. So they gave him a family, not because that’s what his arc has been working toward or what he deserves, but to (a) justify killing him later (after all, those five years equal a fulfilling and happy life), and (b) make it more emotional. And that’s just… really horrible writing, IMO.

And yeah, I get what they’re saying about there not always being a happy ending and heroes having to do whatever it takes to save the day, etc., but let’s be real here. Isn’t the reason we watch these films and follow these characters to watch them grow and beat insurmountable odds? To feel better about ourselves and the world? To hope? I am admittedly biased here, but happy endings are underrated.

After starting the MCU and carrying it for 11 years, Tony Stark deserved better.

The fact that Tony Stark was developed into Spiderman Homecoming was the key to Peter’s overall characterization. Doing so gave Peter the opportunity to show his struggles within his youth while highlighting Tony and what he wanted out of his life.

Tony growing close to Peter is what ignited his need to be a Father.

Could you imagine Tony being a dad in his playboy years? The child would probably be conceived from one of Tony’s hookups, spiraling his difficulties with alcohol combined with raising a child (Howard Stark, anyone?) And he’d probably eventually lose custody.

It wasn’t until he met Peter Parker, that he tells Pepper that he was dreaming of having a child. The relationship between Pete and Tony was incredible, to be honest I was not looking forward to Homecoming until I heard Tony was going to play a big part in it. This was exactly what Tony needed to be to truly heal. He needed to show that he was not the same father as his dad, which is why Peter was so integral to that. Each time Tony was fatherly to him, he recognized that he WASN’T Howard, but instead, he was Tony Stark. Peter was the new coming hero, who was stumbling through his years with no idea of what he was going to do with his powers outside of his city. Tony revealed to him greater opportunities to join a team, and actually taught him the hard parts, versus just handing him everything. He taught him how to be humble and careful with the powers he was granted with.

Then, in that iconic scene, after Peter had joined the team and was reluctantly allowed to fight against Thanos, he dies. It was shocking, and heartbreaking, and proved that Tony really did love him as a son.

They make us wait a YEAR to maybe see him come back, and he does.

They get to hug, say hi, then they are instantly back to fighting. That scene was less than a minute.

THEN THEY KILL TONY OFF RIGHT AFTER.

SERIOUSLY?

Save me the “necessary shock value symbolism” bullshit.

Tony was meant to be a father. Don’t put Tony and Peter through an entire journey together that was most definitely unfinished, just to kill Tony directly after. They didn’t get to be what they were meant to be. Tony should have been named Director of Shield, goodness he deserved it. It would have been the perfect way to stay behind dangerous lines while still being in the action. He deserved to have his damn workshop and tinker and make every invention his beautiful heart desired, Peter being his right hand. THAT’S the full circle Marvel.

You wanna know what would be “shocking” to Tony’s character?

ACTUALLY GOING HOME!

Not a brief happy farm scene, not a break between one battle to the next, but an ACTUAL life. Giving him the honor of actually resting, like physically literally resting. Having Peter meet Morgan for the first time. Retiring from being Iron Man. Don’t give me the whole “Tony would always keep running to the fight”. Not after he was extremely hesitant about going to battle (before he was the first to go). He said “it would be nice not to die, too”. He did NOT want to die. He has a fucking child! In fact, two! And Marvel thinks that a 30 second hug and “you’re back!” type of scene is going to be enough for everything Tony and Peter have been through? Wow. The death of Tony was unnecessary, and was given so that everyone in the audience could feel shocked. The writers greatly underestimated the value of Tony Stark’s life, and translated “Tony’s torment was going to be the end of him” to “If someone is hurting, the only relief is to die.” Think about it. They thought because Tony was clinging to the suit, that he would have no way out. His suicidal tendencies were too much for his life to handle.

But it’s not true.

You CAN get out. Tony DID get out. He found that light, that purpose, and I thought I could too. Since Marvel didn’t say it, I will. You can life a healthy happy life after a tormented past. It may not be perfect, you will have setbacks and memories that won’t let you sleep. You may drink, or party, or both to soothe the pain that just comes back. But someday, you will find your purpose for this world like Tony did. And do not think for a second that your scars make you any less qualified for being alive. Tony was an inspiration, and if those writers felt an ounce of the effect Tony etched on us they would have given him what he deserved.

I totally agree with all this, and if people still can’t find a reason for Tony to give up being iron man, I have two:

1. His family

2. The fact that during the final battle in endgame Tony saw how many heroes there were to protect Earth. And how powerful some of them are. He knows that even if he can’t make it to save the day someone else can.

I like how people are using this to say Tony was right about the sokovia accords. Like literally how would the sokovia accords have stopped thanos at all. Every single person in infinity war broke the sokovia accords for fighting without the UNs approval, do you wish they didn’t fight thanos and just let him snap??? It wasn’t about the Sokovia Accords stopping Thanos; it was about keeping the team together. The Russos themselves legit stated that the Avengers lost to Thanos because the team - because Tony and Steve - were divided. (Also the Accords was more so about respecting sovereign borders and the rights + laws of 117 countries than alien incursions.) And what Tony meant about Steve not being there is that Steve promised they’d lose together, but Tony had to lose alone on another planet billions of miles away from Earth. So no, Steve was NOT “literally there for him”. He wasn’t even on the same planet as him. Tony wanted to be prepared for Thanos, Steve had dismissed that by basically saying “No, we don’t have to have preventative measures in place because all we need is the power of friendship on our side to defeat evil. And if we lose, then we’ll do it together. It’s not like the rest of the world will also be losing or anything.” Tony had every right to be pissed because He. Knew. This. Was. Coming. And everybody just dismissed him. Steve dismissed him. This scene was Tony’s “I fucking told you so” moment. It was vindication for all of Tony’s efforts to safeguard humanity against an intergalactic despot like Thanos.
