“Pity the Beautiful”
Pity the beautiful,
the dolls, and the dishes,
the babes with big daddies
granting their wishes.
Pity the pretty boys,
the hunks, and Apollos,
the golden lads whom
success always follows.
The hotties, the knock-outs,
the tens out of ten,
the drop-dead gorgeous,
the great leading men.
Pity the faded,
the bloated, the blowsy,
the paunchy Adonis
whose luck’s gone lousy.
Pity the gods,
no longer divine.
Pity the night
the stars lose their shine…Dana Gioia
Bruce Wayne Campbell was a genuine child prodigy having been by age 12, been sufficiently talented enough for him to be introduced to Eugene Ormandy, the world-renowned conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra, who immediately recognized his brilliance mastering difficult classical piano works. As a young man he would choose a counter culture path and reinvent himself as Jobriath (elaboration of "Job," a stage name he used with his first folk band in Philadelphia. It is rooted in the biblical figure Job, combined with a "dash of Goliath".) Jobriath would become one of the first mass-marketed, proudly, and openly gay (aspiring) rock stars to be signed to a major record label, marketed as a pioneer of glam rock in the early 1970s. Known for his flamboyant performances and upfront sexuality, he was often labeled "America's answer to David Bowie". His music featured a theatrical, cabaret-influenced glam rock sound, often featuring flamboyant, androgynous costumes but than bringing about stardom, the enormous hype resulted in a backlash before he even played a note. His act was perceived as too, or not, commercial enough by the industry, leading to massive financial losses and a rapid end to his mainstream career. After his rock career lay in tatters he once again transformed himself with success in New York as a cabaret singer under the name Cole Berlin. Jobriath would as a male hustler at various points in his life, both before his signing with a major-label and during his later years after he'd fallen from the public eye. Jobriath died from complications of AIDS at the age of 36 in 1983, his body was found 4 days later in his pyramid-topped rooftop apartment at the Chelsea Hotel in New York City.
