it's just mere aesthetic and it barely does that job in the first place because there is more media from this time that looks way cooler cinematography wise, every teenager on this is so insufferable and the whole vendetta of the movie is "ooh, who will fill their void with the manic pixie dream girl??" - and yeah, i do understand most 80's romcoms went that route - but this film managed to make it even more boring!

duckie is supposed to be the pseudo funny charismatic best friend with an edgy feel who loves her oh so much when in reality he's just an incel (because imagine going full jackass mode after being peacefully rejected by your best friend and then getting crazy drunk and treating her current crush like shit and then making out with her BOSS??) with a regina george syndrome without the gay part (apparently..). steff has little to no development throughout the whole movie; born an asshole, died as an asshole.. when they had soo much potential! we see he tries to push blane away as he diminishes andie out of pure jealousy (atleast to me) since he has been rejected by her, and they could've played with that jealousy throughout the movie way more nicely and less subtlely in a way that you feel like a conspiracy theorist for even thinking steff might've been more into andie than we thought (i will, however, make a fanfiction on it), which could've made them a complex, interesting couple, but no.. too woke and complicated for hughes and deutch right? and yeah, calling her a bitch after being rejected is definety bad, but he's and idiot for the sake of it, i like to thing he'd grow out of it.. (definetly unrelated to my love for james spader)

back to blane.. he's just so irrelevant to a point they brainwashed people into mentally choosing scum like duckie over him, for no reason! blane is a wuss, he can't decide anything by himself and it took andie's best friend to convince him to ask for another chance bro.. he is vanilla, but not even the actual thing, he's a vanilla essence with caramel dye and alchohol on it's formula, like cheap, tacky vanilla.

now for andie.. why the fuck did she yell at her dad like that? it was soo unecessary for the whole thing, and she's always having a breakdown or unwell (which as a teenage girl.. okay, i'll let it pass this time) and making it everyone's issue, it's so weird.. the way they try to make her whimsy annoys me a bit; like ''ooh! she makes her own clothes and she has a little twink best friend and get's bullied and her mom isn't around!!'' yeah alright..
