“as long as it’s just for a visit - i don’t want you disappearing on me now. what would i do without my favorite partner? i may have to resign. you’re the whole reason i’m still doing this damn thing.” sawyer chuckled, joking around. it’s what he usually did with eddie, although they did have their serious moments - like now with his friend dropping the dad bomb. “did i just hear that correctly? are you..is that what she said? did you two talk about it?”

‘‘you still know how to flatter me evem when i think i don’t deserve it.’‘ lips are curled into a tiny smile as he shoots a look over at him, raising his pack of cigarettes to him while reaching for another. god, eddie was convinced this was all a dream-- but sofia was back in town and.. he was very much a dad. ‘‘yeah, it.. was not long after i left her, and.. well-- niko was born and.. i’m a dad. i got a three year old son, sawyer. and you’re going to help me babysit him one of these days.’‘

“Then why was I paged?” she said, closing the curtains behind her. She turned to Eddie with a raised eyebrow. He was covered in scratches and blood, and Arden was worried about him to say the least. “Eddie, that doesn’t make it better.” She grabbed a saline filled syringe after putting on some gloves. “You wanna tell me who or what did this to you?”

‘‘because it looks alarming that my hands are covered in some blood and i have a little.. bit.. yanno on my face?’‘ no use in trying to be a smartass, and there was no use in really.. arguing with arden so he sits back on the edge of the little bed in the room-- dropping his phone. ‘‘-- suspect chase. i thought it’d be wise to chase ‘em on my own.’‘

“Just because it doesn’t feel that bad, it doesn’t mean it’s that bad.” Lauren remarked as she reached over to grab herself a fresh pair of gloves. “So, you’re a cop, huh? Tough job…” She noted, making her way over to examine him. “Today’s not as busy as it usually is, so it shouldn’t take that long. This is just standard protocol, sir.” 

brows knit together as he stares up at her, somewhat a little confused at the remark but he shrugs and tilts his head to the side so she can attempt to get a look. ‘’yeah, ‘m a detective. it.. isn’t that big of a deal, y’know. i served in the military. listen, i’m sorry-- for giving.. you such a hard time, an’ all that about doing your job. you’re just doing your job.’’

          BRIGHT ORBS REMAIN ON HIS  as he speaks, attentive as ever. ❝ we can make it work. ❞ at least, for the sake of their son, she hopes they can absolutely make their busy schedules work. emerald hues shift away from him and towards niko as eddie echoes her words in the form of a question. she nods, entirely sure. then, she looks back towards him. ❝ yeah, of course, if that’s something you’d want. ❞ there’s a tug at her heart the moment his eyes water and his hand lifts to wipe at them quickly. it makes her wish she had thought her decisions through a little more. ❝ i mean… it is to him. then again, the highlight of his day today was his friend sharing his lunch with him. it’s entertaining to me because he’s very talkative for his age. eloquent, to an extent, i guess. his speech is pretty advanced but every now and then he reminds you that he’s only three. ❞ his phrasing was often cute and childlike. maybe she enjoyed their talks because he was her son. there’s a pause at his next words and another tug at her heart follows. she’s grateful that niko’s such a sweet kid, expressive and even honest about his feelings. though, maybe that was because of her. ❝ the fact that you’re afraid means you’re already an amazing dad. you don’t want to disappoint him and… i promise, you won’t. ❞ as the soft voice announces that he’s finished eating, she moves to wrap her fingers around eddie’s wrist, pulling him along with her. ❝ come here, sweet boy. mommy wants to talk to you. ❞ her hand releases his wrist and instead, arms open invitingly as she crouches a couple of feet away from niko. ❝ will you tell us what mama has told you about your daddy ?? ❞

‘‘he’s-- smart. takes after his mom from.. what you’re telling me.’‘ eddie mumbles and he’s a little in awe with watching niko, snapping out the little daze he’d been in and walking along with her. this was definitely going to be a new expierence for him, and no matter how afraid he.. he is, he’s certain sofia wouldn’t let him run again and would assure him if he’d been doing anything wrong. eddie still stands behind, hands in the pockets of his jacket as he gazes at the little boy with a tiny smile. head tilts though and he leans down some, murmuring in hopes that he wouldn’t hear. ‘‘you.. you always told him about me? even.. after i left? i’m-- sorry for.. everything.’‘

“Aw, come on, Officer Mendoza! That’s no way to greet a friend,” she winked, rolling her eyes and then listening to what he had to say. She wiped the counter and then takes a look at the sketch, picking it up to get a better look at it. She studied the features of the man, trying to think back if she’d seen him. 

“He definitely looks familiar… wait!” Then it dawned on her. 

“This is Mr. Reynolds! He comes in a few times a week for a black coffee and a blueberry muffin but… I haven’t seen him in at least a week. What the hell happened? He seemed nice.”

‘‘you ran into me once, and you insulted me for something i never called you. not exactly friendly.’‘ taking off the sunglasses, eddie sets them in the pocket of his jacket as his dark eyes meet hers as he waits for some explanation. ‘‘alright, that confirms it. we’re just gonna have to circle back here again, call if you see him and. for the love of god, becca-- don’t approach him.’‘ giving her a pointed look, he makes a motion towards his partner before turning back to her. ‘‘ can i get two little.. treat things to go to?’‘

As Lauren was working a shift in the ER that day, she was working with one of the residents in Emergency Medicine. That meant that there was a lot of injuries that needed patching up, and the nurse was on her feet for the most part. “Sir, you’re bleeding…” The blonde pointed out with a sigh. “I’m sorry, but I don’t think we can let you go home until we get you a head CT.” 

‘‘it.. doesn’t even feel that bad though, doc.’‘ now it did feel bad a little bit, he had a small headache on the rise but he was wiling to forget this, anything he could do to get out of the hospital. ‘‘i-- um.. ran after a suspect, and i ended up getting.. hit with something. don’t exactly.. know what. but-- this.. scan. it won’t take long or what?’‘

           THERE REALLY WASN’T MUCH HE  could say to change her mind. he had left but she never reached out and so… they were both at fault. at least they’d done one thing right. ❝ i don’t have much time off, honestly. one or two days at best but even then… sometimes i’m on call. i do what i can, though, and… i have him at the hospital daycare just to spend whatever time i can. ❞ sofia watches niko for a moment, momentarily making sure he is actually chewing his food correctly before satisfying her motherly instincts and glancing back towards eddie. bright hues watch him, actually taking in his features before she nods. ❝ alright… well, you’re always welcome to come over or - if you really want to, you can take him some nights. i’ll probably stop by myself to help tuck him in… i’m kind of attached. ❞ his words urge her gaze towards their son, head tilting lightly. ❝ that’s our son. ❞ sofia confirms, smile tugging on heart shaped lips. ❝ he looks like you. ❞ she offers, before moving to grab her wallet. ❝ here. ❞ she hands him a small strip of ultrasound pictures. she had her own in her home office, amongst her wall of pictures - it was mainly niko and his baby pictures. ❝ you can sit with him, if you want. he doesn’t usually watch tv while he eats - he… talks about his day. it’s banter and all that but i think it’s cute. ❞

‘‘i get time off every now and then, but it’s rare.. i mean, i will be there for him as much as i can with the time off i get and if i have to bring him to the station with me so the desk sergeant can watch him, i can. i will, even.’‘ it’s adorable, how.. how motherly she is and it tugs at his heart seeing the little gestures, and that look that’s like.. a mama bear protecting her cub. ‘‘i can? take him some nights, really?’‘ it was like he couldn’t believe it himself, he had to ask twic and maybe he’d even ask a third time because this seemed like a dream. a dream he was ready to explore being by her side again with their son. god, introducing niko to sawyer was bound to be a treat.. one he’d probably have to record and show sofia. once the baby pictures were handed over to him, his lips purse and eddie brings his free hand up to wipe at his eyes. ‘‘he.. he does? he likes talking about his day? it’s.. that entertaining?’‘ its genuine curiousity, head tilting as he surveys niko in thought before leaning over. ‘’i’m.. so afraid i’m going to be bad at this. what if he doesn’t like me?’’

            SHE REMEMBERS HURTING ON HIS  behalf whenever his mom was mentioned. she remembers running her hands through his locks while he embraced her a little too tightly, as though she’d disappear if he didn’t. then… she remembers hugging her knees in his absence, sat on the floor - back to the wall and gaze everlastingly locked on that damn door. she remembers loving him and she remembers mourning his departure as though he never existed to begin with. but god did she love him all the more the moment she held their son in her arms for the very first time. sofia had taken that from him, he had not heard niko’s heartbeat for the very first time, he had not pressed his palm against her bump while their child kicked and kicked. so… why wasn’t he mad ??? ❝ don’t do that. ❞ the dark haired woman draws out, shaking her head. ❝ don’t act like i didn’t do anything wrong. eddie, he’s your son and i should have told you. ❞ finally, she brings her gaze up to look at him. ❝ i just… i didn’t want to be the reason you didn’t get were you wanted to be. ❞ and it was true. anger would wash away but resentment engraved itself in one’s heart and remained there forever. ❝ i just - i can forgive you for leaving me but i will never forgive you if you leave that little boy. he’s a child, eddie. he’s our child and he deserves a present father. i know that and… i know it’s my fault that you weren’t present before but - i told him all about you. as much as one can before overwhelming a child. ❞ the patter of feet urges her gaze away from him and her tone shifts, features brightening instinctively. emerald hues watch as he moves to climb onto the chair at the dining table. she moves over towards him, setting his plate down in front of him before tilting her head. ❝ mastica bien, si ?? ❞ delicate hand lifts, threading through the soft locks of the little boy before she moves to place his sippy cup of juice besides his plate. she moves when he nods, turning the dinner TV on to his current favorite show. it’ll be distracting enough for his parents to speak at a reasonable distance without curious little ears overhearing. ❝ are you hungry ?? ❞ she wasn’t, not anymore, at least not right now. but maybe he was.

‘‘--you didn’t though. at least in my eyes you didn’t.’‘ hand runs along his face as he looks off in thought, shrugging and pulling the jacket tighter around himself. ‘‘you.. you wouldn’t have held me back. i would’ve gotten to where i was, even if i stayed in new york with you a little longer.’‘ dark orbs return to her emerald ones and this time eddie takes that step closer. the thought comes across his mind of reaching out to kiss her cheek, or.. really in general kiss her-- but that’d probably be a bad decision. ‘‘i didn’t know my own father, sofia. i.. won’t put him through that. i swear, i’ll be glued to your side and niko’s side. no way you’d be getting rid of me anytime soon.’‘ eddie murmurs and he watches her with niko, a smile over his features and the question almost goes over his head. ‘‘hm? oh.. no, no. i’m not-- i’m.. just in awe.. actually happy, you know? that’s.. our son over there.’‘

❝ i know.❞ sofia nods, attempting to reassure him. it was a little suspicious, how well he seemed to be taking things. i mean… it was pretty self explanatory - niko had her eyes but… everything else was all eddie. a comfortable silence settles between the three before the little boy breaks the ice, continuing his chatter about his day and how his bestest friend in daycare shared his ham and cheese sandwich with him. it doesn’t take long for them to reach the lobby of their building. ❝ hey kiddo !! ❞ the manager greets, lowering his hand to high-five the eager boy. then, he greets sofia and eddie - perhaps confused himself. she returns the greeting, moving to pick up the bag of takeout on the counter with her name on it. ❝ we’ll see you later, sam, thank you ! ❞ sofia had smiled a few moments ago. now, she was standing in the middle of her kitchen, heading to the sink. ❝ go wash up, little man. ❞ sofia draws out after drying her own hands off on some towel paper. bright hues watch as the little boy darts off towards the direction of his room. then, she reaches into the bag. ❝ his… his name is - niko… mendoza fernandez. ❞ she isn’t sure if that helped at all but she hopes it does. her gaze doesn’t meet his, instead, remains locked on the chicken she is shredding into small pieces for her son, their son.

in the back of his mind, he was afraid. hell, he’d never knew who his dad was-- his mom had raised him with the help of her older brother’s. he grew up afraid, because if he had a kid he didn’t want to turn out the way his dad did-- gone and out of the picture. damn, he failed massively at that. arms had been folded over his chest as he stood beside her, leaning against the counter as he looks off in the direction of his.. son’s room. ‘’niko mendoza fernandez..if my mom was still here, i know she would’ve loved him.’’ eddie murmurs to himself, and for a brief second he feels the corners of his lips pull up at the thought of his mom being around and in the picture with niko calling her ‘abuela.’ clearing his throat, eddie averts his gaze and brings a hand up to rub at his eyes. it was safe to be open around her, there was no need to keep the guard up. he sighs, hand running through his hair and tugging at it momentarily before turning to her. ‘’you.. gotta know how sorry i am. you gotta know, i will-- spend forever making it up to you okay? i will.. i’m so sorry for everything, the way i left, the way i considered myself and how i didn’t think about you & your feelings.’’ the words come flooding out like word vomit, and he doesn’t know how to stop. ‘’sofia, i’m sorry-- for being an asshole and for.. leaving you, and just for.. everything in general.’’

DOES HE KNOW JUST HOW   true the word was ?? she hates herself for hiding. sofia fernandez cannot help herself, he had gone to chase his dreams and she had been left to pick up the pieces of the damaged heart he inevitably left behind. all hope of leaving effortlessly vanishes the moment he addresses her again, eyebrows furrowing delicately. ❝ this  ?? you mean… him ?? ❞ her words seem defensive and she quickly realizes she has no right to be defensive. niko was their child, not just hers. she was in the wrong here and eddie deserved to know the truth. ❝ i’m sorry, we’re… not too far from my place - you can join us and we can sit down and talk once he’s set to eat. ❞ she hopes she won’t regret inviting him over. ❝ he’s coming ?? ❞ the boy is confused, obviously, especially since he had just been instructed to bid him farewell. sofia nods, smiling lightly. ❝ let’s hope the food beats us home. ❞ 

‘‘i didn’t-- mean it as it sounded. i-- wanna talk about him, i wanna talk about you.. sofia i wanna talk about everything with you.’‘ it was hard not to keep glancing at.. his son. their.. son. hell, there was a lot to catch up on and there was that part of him eager to learn all about him but at the same time.. eager to prove to her that he had changed as well and wouldn’t cut & run like he did the last time. ‘‘-- i appreciate this. appreciate you inviting me, and.. you know, just.. everything so far.’‘ hands are stuffed into the pockets of his jacket as he looks down at the little one, lips curling into a tiny smile as he moves to walk alongside her.

“just don’t disappear on me for good, alright? the second you’re gone from chicago i’m stuck with my ex-partner and while he’s a good detective…i’d rather be with you. i’d miss you too much, since you’re the love of my life and all.” sawyer said with a wink, but became more serious once he heard that eddie’s ex was in town. “must be the week for it, ‘cause i saw Ivy the other day when i was out. it was like I got the wind knocked out of me.” it definitely wasn’t a feeling he had liked. “a dad? wait - what? are you…really?”

‘‘like i’d put you through that. plus i said i was thinking about it, buddy. doesn’t mean it’s a definite thing.. haven’t visited my mom in a while anyways.’‘ he could feel the corners of his lips quirk up as he shoots sawyer an amused look, putting a hand over his heart. ‘‘shit, so someone else may take my spot as the love of your life then? i ran into her the other day to. i gotta tell you though, as intimidating everyone thinks i am-- i don’t.. hate.. everyone. i think she thought i’d hate her.’‘ shrugging, fingers drum along his leg in thought. ‘’yeah. i think i am. this kid.. is probably the cutest thing i’ve seen, sawyer and i feel like the biggest asshole that i didn’t know. then.. again, at that time in my life i was pretty much one. but yeah.. think i’m a dad, now.’

        EMERALD OPTICS STUDY HIM AS  he studies her son, their son, suddenly she wonders if she had been selfish in thinking she was being selfless. he deserved to know. eddie deserved to know his son just as niko deserved to know his father. he did, through her… she had never lied to him. ❝ not long, we’ve only been here a couple of months. i think… two ?? ❞ no, she knew it had been two. ❝ i’m sorry, he hasn’t eaten yet and - well, he has to so… ❞ maybe if he looked long enough, he’d put two and two together. was she ready for that ?? was she ready to be the bad guy ??? she should have reprimanded him for cussing in front of the little boy who spoke spanish as fluently as a three year old could - but she could not bring herself to even do that. ❝ say goodbye, baby. ❞ 

‘‘two months here?’‘ of course, why would she go about telling him when she first moved to the city? eddie was in a rush to get on with his career and left the second the police academy came calling-- not bothering to consider her & their relationship. before he could even utter out another word, she was urging the boy to say goodbye, extending a hand out to the boy. ‘‘it.. was good to meet you, mijo. and..’‘ trailing off as dark orbs land on hers, eddie fights the urge to step any closer. ‘‘i.. want to talk about this. talk about everything i’ve missed, okay? i’m ready and i’m here.. i’m not going anywhere.’‘

“dallas?” sawyer repeated, raising a brow as he looked at his partner. something seemed off about him, and not just because he wanted to get away for a while. “somethin’ going on you want to tell me about or what? we’re off the clock here. we can talk personal.”

it seemed a little hard for him to come out with, but this was practically a brother-- someone he could trust with his life. taking the glasses off his eyes for a brief moment, eddie sets them to the side and shrugs. ‘’my ex is in town. i think i’m a dad.. and y’know, that’s.. really about it.’’ shrugging, eddie turns to sawyer with a shrug. ‘’same old stuff, y’know?’’
