It's 2024 and people in the west still insist jirai is "just a style" when even freaking Sweet Lolita (DearMyLove I'm looking at you) and Decora in black x pink are being called "地雷系ファッション" by magazines and brands, precisely as it's any fashion worn by girls labeled as landmine and not because it's a fashion on its own called jirai.
Of course jp girls will answer that they "just like the style" when being asked whether they are jirai because guess what, people wear clothes they like for no reason without wanting it attributed to their mental health or behaviour.
.
I keep seeing the claim that Bizuko trademarked yamikawaii but I never seen and proof or reason to believe that, is there any?
If you are an English speaker (and not Japanese) that’s understandable since most of the news has been in Japanese. I was told of this through THIS reblog by @fymenhera and they are far more versed in this than I am however, a quick summary.
On March 11th 2017, Bisuko Ezaki filed a trademark application for the genre “Illness cute’’ [aka yami kawaii.]. According to this togetter OP Bisuko “came under fire from March 4, 2019″ for various things which they tweated. You can read more about it [in Japanese] here and here [first “here” links to the post which links to the more primary source, which is the second “here”]. Japanese copyright law is…odd to say the least, I only know a little bit about it because of Nintendo who have used the law before for some…odd things. I don’t know if they managed to get the claim passed or not, I haven’t heard any updates since then.
I’d like to say, I don’t speak Japanese and I’m not an expert! A lot of people come to me and ask questions like I am! I’m happy to answer them the best I can but I’m just a expert amateur! :)
source!
I'm sick to death of people who just won't accept that jirai kei isn't purely fashion and that there is a massive mental health aspect to it like why do you think it's called 'landmine type' people don't call it that for the shits and giggles. The fashion is still girly kei, girly kei isn't an illegitimate term, and its existed longer than its jirai associations. Also Jirai isn't even one fashion jirai folk wear multiple different fashion as it happens dark girly is just particularly popular but so is tenshi kawaii, Yami kawaii, and Goth punk styles.
I won't lie the jirai community has had it's own influence over these styles to popularise certain elements like for example makeup trends like the emphasis of tearbags but that doesn't make a whole style in its own right
Jirai is a subculture with a heavy fashion emphasis but it is not a fashion in its own standalone right

to maybe help anon understand:
the explanation for why a lot of people hate the "gaijin jirai kei community" or whatever is bc the western community has tried to entirely change what jirai kei means and is about. like to the point jp landmine girls also talk about it. overseas self-proclaimed landmine girls usually arent jirai kei girls at all, but cosplay as jirai kei or think the clothing they wear to fit in with jirai girls is literally a new fashion starting in 2020 called jirai kei.
because they think its clothing, theyve completely run actual jirai (landmine) girls out of the jirai comm with bullying for "being crazy/not recovering/believing in girly kei", and are trying to rewrite the meaning of a japanese subculture and word (that is already having a hard time in japan bc of misuse by influencers.)
so atp most of the overseas "jirai comm" now are just people who wear girly kei or general yamikawaii styles who have been told by influencers that its actually a new style called jirai kei and that the girly kei fashion doesnt exist. they took the jirai out of jirai kei and are trying to fabricate a whole "reclaiming" narrative- and bullying is super common within the comm, especially bullying those that the fake "its reclaiming mental health recovery uwu" narrative claims to be about empowering. so a lot of people, including western and japanese landmine girls, REALLY hate the western jirai kei comm- because they appropriated the term and look of a subculture while trying to rewrite its history, and have a tendency to bully while doing so.
^ yes that was long and rambling, idgaf. and before anyone comes for me... i am a long time jirai subculture member myself, im not trying to shit on jirai itself, just give an explanation for the reason so many people cant stand western jirai
.
I feel so bad when I indulge into more Jirai Kei stuff because I'm not Asian, and I feel bad cuz so many Japanese landmine girls complain about us overseas ones 😭
ive been involved in the jp landmine scene online as someone not from japan and without japanese ancestry, so i can only speak to my experience as a foreigner member of the jp subculture online. dw, as long as u arent spreading misinfo, LARPing, or being rude in my experience they dont rlly care, or if they do its a positive thing bc they feel less alone, which is what jirai was about originally before it became a dressup trend.
unless youre claiming jirai kei is a fashion, or using jirai kei as a fetish or influencer gimmick, arent posing for pics pretending to be a toyoko kid when u dont live that lifestyle, and dont look down on people who cut, smoke, abuse drugs, and do sex work as inferior to you, most of the jirai comm in japan will welcome u with open. arms. thats regardless of your nationality, race, gender, or preferences in aesthetics. it is usually seen in a better light if u also learn at least a tiny bit of japanese if ur gonna interact w the japanese landmine community, just bc its more polite to at least try to communicate in the other persons language if you try to initiate a connection.
the things i described that theyd take issue with are things japanese influencers, brands, and porno studios do too, and the actual jp landmine community complains when they do it too- and theyre usually asian. its much less about race as much as the fact thag at least the influencers who are wearing yamikawaii styles and posing as toyoko kids to it to profit off a community they arent a part of in japan at least dont try to erase or "reclaim" the word, whereas overseas fashion jirai do. the influencers know they are essentially cosplaying as mentally ill by describing their clothing as jirai and posing fake kabukicho pics, but western fashion jirai instead refuse to acknowledge that jirai kei is a subculture, there isnt one "jirai kei fashion", that "jirai fashion" is an adjective and not a specific style, etc, while publicly shaming the real landmine girls of kabukicho cutting on street corners... then pose for a picture on a street corner w a boxcutter.
td;lr just dont believe or spout misinfo, do ur research, and try to learn at least a few sentances in japanese and ur gonna be fine
my favorite brands and places to find yamikawaii fashion that aren't just "go on amazon"
ACDCRAG!!! THE GOAT!!! i love their stuff, all very comfortable and has super fun designs. their free size is about a us medium, but I don't know what their plus size sizing is like.
drug honey- really cute brand, makes mostly yamikawaii and casual dark girly pieces
etsy- there's a bunch of shops on there selling a variety of clothes and accessories, zombieunicornjewelry and merbunnybaby are a few of my favorites.
listen flavor- a brand if you have some extra money to spend. pretty much the original yamikawaii brand, but somewhat expensive. if you can find secondhand though, go for it! (and tell me lol because I can't find much)
depop- looking up yamikawaii will give you a bunch of fun stuff that people are reselling, though quality and shipping can vary wildly. great to find secondhands of any of the previously mentioned brands.
keimarket- another reselling website, but specifically for reselling jfashion pieces, an offshoot of the lolita reselling site lacemarket. though it's pretty much overrun with girly kei and gyaru (a lot of liz Lisa for some reason??), some yamikawaii stuff can be found.
and that's about it! let me know if this helped any of you guys <3
If you know how to browse etsy and know what words to search, you'll often find more than just zombieunicornjewelry (love them tho!).
Hell, half the stuff I find is either general jfashion stuff that happens to work for my menhera bag and looks or actual menhera pieces that are just not in the top search results because they use more tags than just menhera. Plus, there's plenty of EU and UK options for those in either one! If it's not under Yami Kawaii or Menhera searches, I've had luck with medikawa and Medical Kawaii (you'd be surprised how many cute accessories and clothing exist thats advertised towards registered nurses too!)
Mercari and Ebay are also worth looking at and if you look hard enough, you're often able to find amazing pieces for cheaper than Depop (i use Depop as a last resort due to people overpricing intentionally). If you can access and order through a 3rd party website, you can try to access both the Japanese websites and get more options!
Taobao is also a great option for Yami Kawaii and Menhera items, but like MercariJP, you might need to use a 3rd party website depending on where you live, but they do have worldwide options. It's a process to learn how to use the site, but there are guides on tiktok that explain how to order from them as a non-Chinese citizen, especially as a US citizen. Also, like Etsy has been having issues with, you may need to take a moment to check for crappy dropsellers or just general scams, but that's an issue you can avoid by seeing if there's more than one picture in the listing and if the reviews leave any photos.
my theory on the reason why so many western "jirai" influencers and articles reporting on the phenomenon don't talk about (or straight up lie about) things such as the toyoko kids, self harm, sex work, and drug addiction is because they want to make it a more palatable and marketable thing for western audiences. these real life issues that cannot be ignored are not good for selling frilly clothes and marketing your social media account, so they intentionally obscure them and try to appeal to audiences by saying it's a "reclamation of mental health" similar to menhera, when that's just not true. the reality of the issues that actual japanese landmines face are swept under the rug by westerners trying to market it as a new trendy fashion, taking the actual landmine out of the landmine type, which is think is disgusting. using the "cute aesthetic" of a serious problem in japan to sell and promote yourself is absolutely vile.
i feel conflicted about yami kawaii because while i love it i also worry about some aspects of it. i always argue that its not romanticizing mental illness but then i look at its very creator and his "wrist cut warriors" series and it just feels a bit... weird... as a mentally ill person im just not sure where the line should be drawn between coping and romanticization/fetishization
.
good news! the "creator" ur talking about didnt create yamikawaii at all- and his claiming he did resulted in MASSIVE controversies in japan. he himself is a very... interesting... person who rlly shouldnt be looked to for information AT ALL.
also: the wrist cut warriors series came BEFORE his weird ableist & fetishy downfall and was a satirical project meant to put on full display how quietly suffering up to and including self harm and suicide is seen as more acceptable in japan than getting help, being open about your issues, or talking about society needing to change. the girls r literally sacrificing themselves and their health to transform, and its meant to be a nod to the fact that hurting yourself and shutting up for the sake of society is seen as noble. its way more clearly satirical in the original japanese. but then bizuko had a major breakdown, claimed he invented yamikawaii, got blacklisted by a lot of original menhera artists and events, went to english twitter to spread misinfo that menhera doesnt exist as retaliation, killed off the original spirit of the menherachan series in favor of brand deals + 4panel comics making fun of fat girls, saying women are shit and thats why people turn gay, becoming an open shotacon, and started doing commission work for cutting fetish brands.
yamikawaii itself has its own whole history that predates him, and menhera even predates the term yamikawaii. id recommend @menhera-info-archieve for more information!
I was reading a book (about interjections, oddly enough) yesterday which included the phrase “In these days of political correctness…” talking about no longer making jokes that denigrated people for their culture or for the colour of their skin. And I thought, “That’s not actually anything to do with ‘political correctness’. That’s just treating other people with respect.”
Which made me oddly happy. I started imagining a world in which we replaced the phrase “politically correct” wherever we could with “treating other people with respect”, and it made me smile.
You should try it. It’s peculiarly enlightening.
I know what you’re thinking now. You’re thinking “Oh my god, that’s treating other people with respect gone mad!”
Happy Valentine’s Day.
Eleven years old. Still true.
