Research on Photographing Strangers for Assignment 6
As an Introvert who barely interacts with strangers, photographing strangers in the street was almost a nightmare, and was extremely out of my comfort zone. Nonetheless, my interest in the topic pushed me to get out of this comfort zone. Thus, I started to research on street photography and on how photographers take images of strangers in the street.
Through my research, I learnt that rejection is always possible, and although it might be embarrassing but it is normal, it is just accepting people's privacy. This really helped me with accepting the rejections I received from around 5 people who refused that I can photograph them.
Here are some tips I found beneficial on how to photograph strangers:
Smile as you approach them: this was really helpful when I tried it because it broke the ice and made my subjects accept my words welcomingly.
Do not get too close to the people
Open small conversations before shooting: I applied this with my subjects, because I asked them first about their dream career then I photographed them. This small conversation made them more comfortable during the shooting.
Answer their questions honestly: I honestly and clearly answered their questions concerning how I will use these photographs and clarified that it is non-profit and that the images will only be used for educational purposes, this made them more comfortable while shooting.
