⚠️ MAJOR Shin Yakumo (sequel) volume 2 Spoilers ⚠️
HELP I CAN'T BELIEVE KAMINAGA-SENSEI WROTE THIS 😭
Just as Suou and Kokone were about to start walking toward the building where Ai’s apartment was, Yakumo suddenly said, “Go on ahead without me.” He stepped away from them and held his phone to his ear.
It seemed he had received a call.
But rather than actually going ahead, Suou thought it best to wait until Yakumo finished his conversation.
“Maybe it’s his girlfriend,” Kokone teased, sitting down on the nearby swing.
“It’s probably Inspector Ishii from the Setamachi Police Station,” Suou guessed. Yakumo had tried calling Ishii before they arrived but hadn’t gotten through. This was likely Ishii returning the call.
“If it were just work, he could talk while walking. But telling us to go ahead? That screams ‘girlfriend call,’” Kokone insisted, rocking back and forth on the swing.
The chains creaked as they rubbed against the metal. For some reason, that sound felt strangely nostalgic to Suou.
“You think so? Yakumo-san doesn’t seem like the type to entertain calls from a girlfriend.”
Yakumo rarely showed his emotions and carried a certain air of detachment. Suou couldn’t quite picture someone like that being overly affectionate in a relationship.
“You don’t get it. Guys like him? They’re total softies in front of their girlfriends.”
“I don’t know. When I saw him with her before, he didn’t act like that…”
“Well, of course, they hide it in public! But behind closed doors? I bet he’s crazy possessive. Gets mad if she takes too long to reply to a text.”
“Nah, I don’t see it…”
Suou couldn’t imagine Yakumo losing his temper over something like that. If anything, he seemed like the type to maintain a dry, almost indifferent relationship.
When he said this, Kokone scoffed, jumping off the swing. “You really don’t get it. People like him? They probably use baby talk with their girlfriends.”
“You mean like, ‘goo-goo, gaa-gaa’?”
“Exactly! ‘I’m tired today, so I want cuddles, please~’”
“No way.”
A sharp voice cut through their exchange—Yakumo’s, laced with irritation.
He had returned without them noticing, making Suou’s stomach drop in surprise. Kokone, however, remained completely unfazed.
“Honestly, that sounds like something you'd say.”
“I would never use baby talk.”
“Cat talk, then?”
“…What?”
“You know, like ‘nyaa, nyaa~’?”
“What do you think I am? I’d never say something like that.”
“Really? I should ask your girlfriend myself. Let’s meet her.”
“Absolutely not.”
“Boooring.”
Yakumo getting teased by someone younger than him is the funniest thing ever. Kokone’s constantly on his case, bro can’t catch a break 😂
But she’s kinda right though.
I don’t see Yakumo as the toxic possessive type, and I definitely don’t see him using baby talk, but he’s absolutely clingy and jealous.
Didn’t this man literally just tell his girlfriend to wait inside a shop if he was ever late again because he got jealous after seeing her get hit on?
Using the awkward, deadpan “because it’s cold” excuse.
In JULY.
He pulled her arm, gave the guy that terrifying look, and the next time they met, she found him waiting for her, apparently he just couldn't handle seeing that again 😭
Same guy who now only uses her name when they’re alone, by the way.
And don’t even get me started on that short story from last year where he fell asleep in the lab, dreaming about her and sleep-talking her name.
MIKOSHIBA RECORDED IT 💀
Called him “lovestruck” and said he’d use it as a “bargaining chip.”
Loses an argument and goes “fine, here's your reward" and hugs her.
This is also the same man who literally tried to die in the final volume just to follow her into the afterlife.
AND THAT'S NOT EVEN THE FULL LIST.
Don’t even try to act like you’re not jealous, clingy, and down bad, bro 😭😭😭
two main characters with dead twins from my current hyperfixation (ghost hunt) and one of the hyperfixations i periodically return to, shinrei tantei yakumo. ayaka died when she was five and gene died when he was fifteen/sixteen, but this art poses them somewhere in the single digits between that, wearing...victorian pajamas or something.
i felt like drawing something cute. i thought about coloring this, but today was...tiring. so, simply black and white contrast.
It's been a while since the last update. Thank you for those who have been checking in and sent messages during that time, I'm sorry that I didn't end up responding to some. I hope this update will make up for it.
Updates and Schedule
In case you haven't seen it, the entirety of volume 11 file 3 has been released. Sorry for having to split it into two separate posts, I had to do it to circumvent this platform's post length restrictions and I didn't feel like releasing in another format or platform. The editing was also particularly rushed as I didn't want to hold off releasing it for much longer after the draft was completed, so do let me know if you spot anything strange.
Unfortunately, the completion of volume 11 likely will be the last major update for this year. The order of my upcoming translations remain unchanged, but I have now taken down any estimated release windows from my schedule page to avoid giving false expectations. Hopefully though, there may be a few smaller releases coming up still this year!
Volume 11 translation notes
I'm going to comment about some volume 11 spoilers (?) from here onwards, so do give the rest of it a read if you haven't already.
I struggled wording the title for file 3 pretty much from when I started working on it right before it was published. As with most titles for numbered volume files, Kaminaga-sensei tends to stick to mostly one word titles. The JP title of file 3, 代償 (daishou) is the same word used in the volume title, 魂の代償 (Worth of a Spirit). The choice of translating 代償 into 'worth' was not my own, it was taken directly from the ID version as I didn't feel any need to reword it. But to reuse it as the title for file 3 made no sense. In fact, none of the singular English equivalent of the word 代償 seem to sufficiently represent the original title. I think the word could be better described as "price/cost (in compensation of achieving or acquiring something)" which is befitting to the events that unfolded in the file, but I felt like making it too wordy would basically spoil the story, so I ended up with something halfway... What do you guys think? I hope I didn't accidentally give it away to anyone.
Alright, before I close off my rambling, speaking of the setting, in volume 11 we're taken back to volume 2's setting along Tama River. Did you know that Oda-sensei took references from the actual river and its water gates in the manga adaptation? Here's a picture I took of the actual location in 2023.
As it had been over 13 years, the structure of the gates have changed, but following the guide I used, I was at the right location.
Interestingly though, the police box a few stations away that was also referenced for Ishii's investigation remained pretty much the same, down to the weathered spot!
By the way, the guide I mentioned is the Yakumo Walker, released in 2010 compiling various real-life locations referenced in the manga adaptation at the time.
Last but not least, here's a link again to the drafts for Suzuki Yasushi's version of the volume 11 cover. Never fails to amaze me how much it gives away...

This marks the 14th year. With everything that's going on and how uncertain the future ahead seem to be, I'm glad I get to celebrate another of your birthday... even if with not much at all, it's been a principle of mine that something is always better than nothing.
I didn't even have much of a concept in mind, other than a compilation of celebration related shenanigans. A sense of normalcy I could hardly feel at the moment, but haven't stopped longing for, as long as I'm here.
With you, I'll continue to hope for better days, so here's to another year.
