Wait a sec, In the first episode, Lance and Hunk both knew who Keith was. Pidge had no clue who he was though, and Pidge entered the Garrison after the failed Kerberos mission. So, we can infer that Keith left around that same time. What I'm saying is, maybe Keith left the Garrison because Shiro disappeared? Maybe Keith wanted answers, didn't get them, and thats where his little "discipline issue" came from? He obviously knew Shiro before the Kerberos mission from the interactions we see between them, so its entirely possible that Keith felt lost and moved to that desert because Shiro was gone without a trace. Maybe he was actually looking for Shiro and came across Voltron's Blue Lion cave? That would explain the sticky notes on his conspiracy board saying something along the lines of "being without you is killing me" etc.
