Hi ⊙ v ⊙ I'm about to yap about the tarot cards again XD!!
other analysis things I wrote:
[ Nagito's original speech patterns * updated * ] [ Kokichi's actions in V3 ]
[ Nagito's presence in V3 ] (more on my pinned)
To keep this one from being extremely short, I'll make it a double-feature (or something). I had an idea, it was a little too late to tack it on to the end of my previous tarot card collab yapfest, so... Uh, doing it now XD!!
Kind of makes sense for Nagito and Junko to be the fake Emperors. Once I started thinking about it... I dunno if they just left those cards out because they wouldn't have a clean, satisfactory translation for them, one they would have wanted (without relying on katakana - all of the cards were labeled with kanji)... But there is another reason why it makes sense.
Going to get out in front of this and say: I love Nagito. I don't think lying is inherently a horrible quality - lies are sometimes used as defense, as protection, or in his case, an attempt at camouflage.
I've said before, a few times, that I believe Nagito is misrepresenting himself in a desperate attempt to matter to somebody and hopefully fit in. He was isolated, his social skills are terrible, he's trying to do an impression of somebody lovable so he won't get abandoned for once.
Meanwhile, Junko is also misrepresenting herself at all times, hiding a horrible identity that wants to inflict harm on everybody she can reach. She hides behind this charismatic fashionista persona, but underneath that..?
I'll get to that in a minute, this isn't going to be laid out very well since I'm pretty lousy at organizing my thoughts... I'll do my best.
First of all, I'll give the true meanings of Nagito's (claimed) card, as well as Keech, since... I mean, I can just pull a link to the graphic off of TK's post.
(The meanings are all from my Rider-Wait deck booklet, I'm not making this shit up XD!! I'm just going to give the meanings to the cards, and my opinions about whether I believe they suit the character or not.)
"The Emperor" / The Hanged Man
The Emperor:
- stability, power, protection, a great person; aid, reason, conviction
The Hanged Man:
- wisdom, circumspection, discernment, trials, sacrifice, intuition, divination, prophecy
The Emperor kind of suits Nagito... It fits the character he was attempting to portray, at least. He was terrible at the impression because it wasn't who he actually was, he kept dropping out of character, and the entire thing seemed like a performance - because it was. He even kept making repeated references to acting and performances (in D2 as well as UDG). It just seemed like an extremely overt hint that he was only acting.
In actuality, he was lonely and wished nobody was exceptional, so he wouldn't be so inferior next to them. He wanted them to all be on the same level, where he wouldn't need to compete - he was incapable of it.
The Hanged Man absolutely suits Kokichi. He was clever, he hid it extremely well behind this constant charade he was doing... It's easy to miss, it's easy to disregard him - and that's what he wanted. He wanted freedom to move around without any suspicion, and his behaviour afforded him that (because they weren't taking him seriously). There were several times when he called people out on their actions, but it's so easy to forget how smart he is because of how he behaves.
Now, on my first write-up, I talked about how I believed that Nagito was meant to be The Hierophant instead - and I still believe that (maybe even more than I did before XD!!)
The Hierophant:
- marriage alliance, captivity, servitude, mercy and goodness, inspiration
The thing is, Nagito wants to be great. He wants to matter. If he can't matter naturally, he wants to make himself important, indispensable. That's why the Emperor card actually suits him, in a way, because that was the type of character he wished he could be. He thought the only way he could matter to anyone was by being discarded. He wanted his discarding to lead to something magnificent.
The thing I was wanting to say before was that the false Emperor cards do suit Nagito and Junko, for different reasons. Not sure why they actually omitted The Hierophant and The Devil, but the fact both of those characters are deceptive (for different reasons), it makes perfect sense. They're both attempting to portray this strong, powerful character (or in Junko's case, pretending to be loving, accepting, and not-evil). Byakuya is the actual Emperor - his card has the number on it. The other two aren't numbered and the only way you'd know which cards were supposed to be there was if you looked at the entire list, and located the missing ones.
This is already so long but I guess I'm going to find out if there's a character limit on here, wish me luck XD!! I'll try to do all of the cards and meanings on this one post.
The Fool / The Magician
The Fool:
- folly, mania, extravagance, intoxication, delirium, frenzy, bewrayment
The Magician:
- skill, diplomacy, address; sickness, pain, loss, disaster; self-confidence, will
Ok, I genuinely dunno about either of those ones XD!! I feel like Hajime might have just gotten stuck with that because of Junko repeatedly calling him a chump (and him getting tricked into doing her bidding), and Himiko did complain about things being a pain a lot? But I think she might have just gotten that one from being a Magician (or Mage).
The High Priestess / The Empress
The High Priestess:
- secrets, mystery, the future as yet unrevealed; silence, tenacity; wisdom, science
The Empress:
- fruitfulness, action, initiative, length of days, the unknown, clandestine; difficulty, doubt, ignorance
Kyoko's suits her extremely well, but I'm a little less sure about Sonia's... I mean, some of it seems fitting? Her affinity for scary things, for instance, fits in pretty well with action/initiative, as well as the unknown/clandestine. Just having that push toward things she wasn't supposed to have any interest in, that does seem fitting for her.
Kyoko's is basically an ideal match for her, and Sonia's is... Maybe in the ballpark. Some of the spirit is there.
The three Emperors, only one of which has a card number on it, just to show the comparison... Byakuya's got his little IV hat on XD!!!
Now here's the Lovers cards, looks like there's a mystery/lucky draw variation? Which looks to me (and a couple others in the comments of the other post) like it might be Maki and Shuichi on the alternate.
The Lovers:
- attraction, love, beauty, trials, overcome
I was going to comment on how "trials, overcome" makes sense for all three of them, but... I mean, that just makes sense for everybody ever XD!! That's the point, overcoming the bullshit and attempting to survive obstacles.
(Not being dismissive, this card does make sense for both pairs, that's all I mean to say, makes sense.)
The Chariot / Strength
The Chariot:
- succor, providence; war, triumph, presumption, vengence, trouble
Strength:
- power, energy, action, courage, magnanimity
Not sure if they just gave Chariot to Kazuichi because "mechanic", but... That guy's got some trouble, partial credit XD!!
Just kidding, he's spirited and tries his best XD!!! Sorry, I'll stop, eventually.
So glad they gave Gonta a card! Ah! Fantastic! It also suits him, but... I mean, would you have any doubts? Gonta getting "Strength"? XD!!!
The Hermit / Wheel of Fortune
The Hermit:
- prudence; treason, dissimulation, roguery, corruption
Wheel of Fortune:
- destiny, fortune, success, luck, felicity
The Wheel of Fortune card was actually the reason I wanted to do this specific list, because it is SUCH an odd choice for Mukuro. Am I missing something? Because it's a fabulous, incredibly positive card, but... How? I'm not sure I understand.
Anyway, The Hermit does fit Kiyo in a few ways... I am not making a negative commentary on him - he's a very complex individual. But you do have to admit something terrible happened to him that ended up with his "corruption".
(The art on these cards is amazing, by the way, ah! So pretty!)
I feel like Chiaki's card suits her personality, just... The lack of energy behind it? But she did help keep everything moving forward. She never got in the way, she never forced anybody along, she definitely wasn't loud or boisterous... Very demure type of card - it fits her decently well, I'd say.
Not going to comment on Junko's resemblance to her true card, I don't think it's necessary XD!!!
(The artwork on both of these are amazing, though, holy shit!)
The Tower / The Star
The Tower was another one I was questioning (along with Wheel of Fortune) because that's a terrible card... I'm not an expert but Tower being overwhelmingly bad stuck out in my memory for absolute certain, and I was wondering why they would give that to Gundham? Hmm.
The Tower:
- misery, distress, indigence, adversity, calamity, disgrace, deception, ruin
The Star:
- loss, theft, privation, abandonment; hope and bright prospects
See what I mean? Holy shit, right? What's going on with Gundham, oh my god XD!! Genuinely not sure about that one at all.
The Star is pretty suitable for Makoto, I'd say... I don't really have much commentary on it beyond that.
The Moon / The Sun
The Moon:
- hidden enemies, danger, calumny, darkness, terror, deception, error
The Sun:
- material happiness, fortunate marriage, contentment
I'd say both of these are pretty fitting, honestly... Hmm.
The Last Judgment / The World
The Last Judgment:
- change of position, renewal, outcome
The World:
- assured success, voyage, route, emigration, flight, change of place
Considering Celestia was basically an OC, I'd say that card suits her in a less literal sense.
I also get the feeling like The World might not be intended to be personal to Shuichi - I don't remember anything about travel associated with him, I'm guessing this is more a reference to the whole "world is a big load of digital bullshit and you're not real", or something?
Anyway, this took for freakin' ever, I hope it's ok because I genuinely have no freakin' idea XD!!
e: If this seems like I ran out of steam toward the midway point? I did XD!! I finished this entire thing after 4am, I was exhausted before 3, also I didn't want to say anything that might have pissed anybody off (commenting on their favourite character in a bad way, not trying to create any friction, just wanted to list off the card meanings and give my opinion about whether the card was suitable or not - most of them basically were.)
