EVOLUTION OF DR IVO "EGGMAN" ROBOTNIK PART 2: RISE OF THE EGGMAN.
With the classic days behind, SEGA released Sonic Adventure 1. which gave the characters a modern re-design. This was Sonic made for the modern days. And with Sonic back, his arch-enemy was right behind.
1. Dr Eggman.
Dr Robotnik was once again introduced as the main antagonist in Sonic Adventure 1. In the game he unleashed Chaos. An ancient god of destruction. Eggman then seeks out to power up Chaos with the power of the chaos emeralds and take over the world. This game also introduced the western to Robotnik’s japanese name "Eggman" as Sonic begins to mock Robotnik by calling him Eggman.
He would later on in the sequel Sonic Adventure 2 Embrace the name Eggman, starting to call himself Eggman, and naming his organization "The Eggman Empire" in order to steal Sonic’s thunder. Eggman would continue to sport this look through SA, SA2, Sonic Heroes and Shadow The hedgehog.
2. Gerald Robotnik.
Sonic Adventure 2 also gave a bit of background for Eggman as it introduced his Grandfather Gerald Robotnik. The man who created Project Shadow, and was the greatest scientist of his time. Gerald was a huge inspiration and Eggman’s hero when he was a kid, which made Eggman want to one day become a brilliant scientist like his grandfather.
3. The descendant. Eggman Nega.
The Sonic Rush games, and Sonic rivals games introduced another Eggman character. Eggman Nega. Having different backstories like being from another dimension, but was later retconned into being Eggman’s descendant from the future. This evil double was a much more evil incarnation, seeking to rather destroy the world. He also dislikes present day Eggman, as Eggman’s reputation ruined things for Nega in the future. This version would continue to re-appear in the olympic crossover games with Mario.
4. Dr Eggman. Failed reboot.
In 2006, SEGA released a new Sonic game which would act as a soft-reboot for the franchise. Eggman was back again as a major antagonist but this time he sported a more semi-realistic look. He sought out the flames of Solaris in an attempt to once again conquer the world. This would also be the only time Eggman would sport this design as he got redesigned for the next game.
5. Eggman reborn.
With the release of Sonic Unleashed, Eggman was redesigned to once again look more like his pre-06 self! And it’s a luck and characterization he has had up to this day. His schemes have included unleashing Dark Gaia, enslaving wisps, taken control of a time eater, conquest of Lost Hex, and conquering the world. In Sonic Frontiers, we’re also introduced to his AI Daughter "Sage".
6. Dr Eggman. Sonic Boom.
Later on, SEGA made a short lived sub-franchise to the Sonic franchise called "Sonic Boom." This series spanned three games, an 11 issues comic series, and a two seasons TV show. Eggman was once again the main antagonist, but as the series focused more on comedy, Eggman was just as much of a comedic foil as the rest, with evil schemes like taking over the village, ruin the rec center, and have his trash collected in a timely fashion.
7. The brother.
Season 2 of Sonic Boom would introduce another Eggman character. Steve Eggman. He would later be revealed to be a shapeshifting robot called "Morpho" having come from another dimension. He posed as Eggman’s long lost brother and would end up developing a brotherly relationship with Eggman, bickering with him a lot, and with his Steve Eggman form becoming his standard form.
8. The Evil-er double!
Season 2 would also introduce yet another Eggman who would appear in a couple of episodes. Lord Eggman. This Eggman originates from a dimension where Sonic doesn’t exists, and thus he managed to conquer the island. After having been defeated by the prime universe’s Sonic, Lord Eggman sought revenge on his new enemy from another dimension.
And that covers that for this chapter. Join me next time as we begin looking at the comic books!
