Olivia shifted in the seat uncomfortably at Mercer’s words, nodding her head once she folded her hands in her lap. “What’s going on?”

“According to Network agents working for a major power plant, there have been odd dips and surges in the power grids along both the east and west coast.” He turned the folder and slid it toward her, letting her read over the information. “Even though we are on our own grid completely and I have faith in my work, a dip might be a worry. Right now we match the same power levels as any of the nearest cities. We blend exactly as we should. But a dip could pick us up on a satellite scanning at just the right frequency.” He bent his head forward and pinched the bridge of his nose, trying to ward off the impending headache.

“I know if we dip at the exact same moment we’ll be fine, and I can have a team working out the patterns they are using in order to make sure whatever we do is in time, but that’s not what worries me. What’s causing concern is that they are trying to find us.” He looked at her, trying and failing to hide the worry in his eyes. “They didn’t even know about us before. We were the lost colony. Made up of ghosts to the government. We didn’t exist. Now we do... now we’re a threat. Soon we wont be able to hide by playing with light switches, Olivia.”

Taking a break from her work at The Hub, Liv stood from her desk and made her way over to Mercer’s office. She knocked twice, two quick raps against the door, and then waited for a response from the other side. Once she heard a muffled come in from the other side, she opened the door and took a seat in one of the vacant chairs in front of Mercer’s desk. “Hey, you wanted to see me?”

Mercer had spend the entire evening going over the file created for him by The Network. It was a disturbing realization that they had, in some part, been found out. Not by Kenneth. No he’d died keeping the colony’s secret and he was sure of it. But they were still looking for them. And this way might actually work. When Olivia came in he looked up at her and reminded himself there were people here that still needed to be protected. “We have a problem,” he said simply. He’d never been much for small talk anyway.

I want you to acknowledge that his actions were the product of that was done to him his entire life, much like your anger is base in what was suppressed in you for most of yours. I believe you decided to retire after a fender bender that sent you into somewhat of a rage? Something simple. Maybe something just as simple as having a beer spilled down the front of you.

Because he got rid of my ignorance. He fucked my chip up and now? I mean what choice did I have after that. Hide like I have been or go back to the life that can only be described as numb? Ignorance of what the chips did, was fucking bliss. He robbed me of that. So I’m stuck hiding like a rat.

There have been two times since my chip was damaged that I wished I had it back. Both of those involved losing people close to me. That’s a pain that is so crippling that I can’t even put into words. But that pain... it’s mine. It makes me human. To be chipped is to be less than human. You never met Silas, but he would have been able to explain it better. You are alive... truly alive because of a man who was just as angry and confused as you have been. Channel your anger toward the people who made life hard by blinding you for 22 years. You’re holding onto a grudge because you still experience emotions like a child. It’s time to grow up.
