You've been gone for a while, but your scent still stays, like a reminder.
Living with maladaptive daydreaming is so odd. Escaping people and creating characters who have so much more complexity than people you have met throughout your life, watching life pass you by through two small windows while a whole war is raging in your mind, surviving major points in your life only for your mind to create more is such an interesting thing to live through. Your mind's imagination is...well, endless!
But also, when I shower, the water is unbearably hot, the happiness I have created through my character takes me away from the coldness of my room only for me to look around and realize that the warm touches are just wind of cold November day. Everyone else moves on with their life, but I am stuck on one singular daydream and that daydream is a drug that I cannot escape.
The water that Mercury stares at calmly lulls the rocks around it to sleep, gently pulling the Sun behind the mountains further away from Mercury's sight. Mercury gently breathes out, using every ounce of strength to not start crying, mixing her teardrops with calm sea.
Bottle that someone left in the sea contained a letter, tea stained and old, and it floated through the water towards Mercury's grasp. She takes the bottle, wraps the palms around it and the worried expression on the face does not wither, not ever. The letter is from someone Mercury has spent long loving, a warrior of the raging war far, far away.
Her lover promised to come back, to find their little cabin near the sea, to sit on the chair by the table where their meal is now covered in mold and various flies and insects. Mercury has spent at least a millennia waiting on her lover, but now that the letter in a bottle arrives to her, she can only think the worst.
Maybe her lover will not come back, maybe their promise under the willow was just another bruise added to Mercury's skin. Maybe Mercury crying before her lover went to the war was a warning, a punch to the gut, a knowledge that is held behind the closed doors.
No, she cannot read the letter... She cannot for she knows what the letter contains. Her lover is not coming back. That's what the letter says and Mercury doesn't even have to open it to know it, it is true, it is a simple and bruising truth, gripping the back of her throat.
And yet, a small curiosity wakes inside her and she decides to read the letter.
As she reads the words, her lips form a gasp and tears fall down her cheek, the letter's simple words holding a deeper meaning that Mercury knew of but refused to acknowledge:

Her lover, AO3, is not coming back.
