POCKET ALTARS

Full disclosure, I do not, nor have I ever had an altar. It isn't anything I have ever felt was necessary to my practice. I have offering jars for my deities and a work space, and that's about it. I have however designed many altars and am generally familiar with them as a *seasoned* witch.

So, there are two main kinds of pocket altars that I will be focussing on.

Miniature worship altars, and mini workshops/casting kits.

Before you do anything else, figure out what you will put it in. I'm using a small jewelry box, but mint tins are popular, and if you intend to put it in a bag, you might choose a slightly bigger box.

---Miniature worship altars are altars the way we typically think of them, only tinier. There are plenty of examples of common layouts online.

Most of the layouts that you can find online are very wiccan, because wicca is more structured and organised than many other forms of magic, but don't be afraid to toss out the layouts, and make up something that is meaningful to you.

I chose to make a miniature version of a common wiccan layout.

(Sorry for the wonky picture quality, I was having a lighting issue, also it's like 100 degrees here rn, and the heat mirages don't help.)

For this kind of pocket altars, clay is your best friend. I made most of my pieces very roughly out of air dry clay, but i also knew I was going to end up tossing them out later and didn't want to waste too much time or materials. If you intend to keep yours, you may want to use oven bake clay, and invest more time in making more quality pieces.

I made two bowls, a plate, a chalice, and my two idols out of clay.

I've also seen people use bracelet charms, and coin machine toys for their idols, the bowls and plates could be swapped out for tiny bottles (that you can find at a jewelry store) various caps, or even small zip-loc baggies.

For my athame, I used an old exacto blade, and made a handle by wrapping the bottom in hemp, this can also be made out of clay, or cardstock, or just left out all together.

My wand is a needle that I gave a clay and hemp handle, a toothpick would also work really well, or if you carry a wand separately, you could forgo it.

For the bell I used a small bell that I had in my jewelry kit (dollar tree sells big bags of these around Christmas, and it's really surprising how often you can use bells for magic.)

I used an incense cone for my incense, however a good substitute would be a drop of essential oil or vanilla on a small square of paper.

My altar cloth is just a scrap of fabric with a pentagram on it, tissue or paper would work just as well.

Last but not least, my candles are just birthday candles that I cut in half to make tiny pillar candles.

---Casting kits/pocket workshop

For this one, you just make a pack of tools and supplies that will let you do spell work on the go.

First thing you want to do, is think about what kind of spell work you usually do.

I typically draw sigils, do candle spells, make potions and salves, use crystals, and make satchets among other things.

Then you want to rule out anything that would feel absurd to do outside of your home. In my case, that's making potions and salves, but the rest are very do-able.

I included paper, a pencil, small birthday candles in a variety of colors, a bag of stone chips I got from a shop in the mountains, matches, some hemp cord in case an emergency binding becomes necessary. A small envelope for an emergency satchets, and some of the items from the first altar kit that I thought might come in handy, specifically the blade, wand, bell, and incense cone.

And just pack it in there any way that it will fit.

SACHETS

So I wanted to start this lesson off with a definition of what a sachet is, but when I went to research it, it seemed that the rest of the world is completely oblivious to the magical uses of sachets, I also looked at talismans and poultices, and yep, magic users are clearly flying way under the radar of both Oxford and Miriam Webster.

A sachet is sort of a little pack of ingredients, sigils, and intent that acts as a spell with a tangible form that you can carry around. A sachet can be just about anything inside of anything, but for today I'm going to give a very specific example/recipe.

For this one we will use:

1 container

1 sigil

1 stone

3+ herbs or other ingredients.

1 Incense, oil, or cande

Containers: an envelope, a Ziploc baggie, a piece of tulle tissue paper or fabric tied in a tiny bindle, any small fabric bag.

Stones: Carnelian, citrine, clear quartz(amplifying your natural energy), red agate, hematite(grounding and focus)

Stone alternatives: a bell, a gold-toned ring, orange pencil shavings

Ingredients: Orange peels/zest, coffee beans/grounds, lemon, basil, dragons blood, black pepper, cinnamon, oregano, gold paint, candle wax, or eggshell

For your candle, choose a color that represents energy to you, for me that's a warm yellow/goldenrod.

For your oil, choose a citrusy smell, or something that makes you happy.

    Or

For your incense, choose dragons blood or something that you associate with fire or joy.

Gather all the items that you will be using for this spell,

preferably somewhere where you can sit in direct sunlight, prepare your sigil

light your candle or incense if you are using them, and imagine that you are a golden, glowing being of pure light and energy while you work. Or if you have specific diety in mind that you would like to help you (Apollo is my personal favorite choice,) ask them to bless you by imbuing you with their light for this spell.

First place the sigil in the sachet to establish its purpose,

and then the other ingredients, which you can sprinkle over the stone to represent yourself being showered in positive energy.

After combining these ingredients into the container, take your

-Oil, and smudge it on the closure of the packet,

          Or

-Candle, and drip the wax onto (or into) the packet,

While imagining that the light from your body is being transferred/drained into the sachet.

-incense, and pass the packet through the smoke,

If you work with a deity, express your gratefulness for their help, but never thank the fae.

Types of Spells & Basic Methods of Casting

Attracting - fill a small jar with honey and add a written statement of intent to the jar - seal and set the jar in direct sunlight to manifest your intent; stir your morning coffee or tea in a clockwise motion while focusing on the intent of what energies you wish to attract for the day; fill a jar with herbs and crystals that represent what you want to attract and add a statement of intent; charge a crystal and wear on your person to attract certain energies; create a sigil and either draw it on yourself or on paper and keep in your pocket; create a talisman, charge it, and wear it to attract various energies

Banishing - take an item that represents what you wish to banish and: throw it in the trash, flush it down the toilet, burn it, bury it, drown it; burn the item and sweep the ashes out the back door or bury them; carve the name of what you want to banish into a black candle and let it burn down completely; transmute negative energy into a stone (preferably a black stone like onyx) and throw it over the fence in your backyard (or whichever direction is south in reference to your home); stir your morning coffee or tea in a counter-clockwise motion while focusing on the intent of what energies you wish to banish for the day; using incense that is associated with banishing negative energy, walk around your space in a counter-clockwise motion with the lit incense in your hand

Binding & Sealing - wrap a string around a poppet or other representation of the target or item you wish to bind; put the poppet or other representation in a plastic bag filled with water and freeze it; place the item in a black box and seal it - store in a dark place or bury the box in your backyard; drip wax over the item

Blessing & Consecrating - anoint an object with holy or blessed water/oil; place the object in a dry bath of herbs or flowers that are known for blessing; pass the object through incense smoke that is associated with blessing

Cleansing - leave the item in the path of direct moon, sun, or starlight; place in a dry bath or herbs or flowers that are associated with cleansing; place the item in a bowl of sea salt; pass the item through incense smoke that is associated with cleansing; pass the item through running water; anoint the item with a cleansing oil or charged water; bury the item in soil for 3 days so it may be “reborn” when unearthed; place a cleansing crystal on top of or next to the item; hang a wind chime outside of your home to negate negative energies before they have the chance to enter your home; open doors and windows; physically clean your space

Cursing - fill a poppet with baneful herbs and crystals, seal it, and store in a black box; add baneful herbs and crystals to a jar with a piece of paper that states the target’s name or a description of them and seal it; create a poppet or other representation of the target and destroy it (commonly by burning); stab the poppet with pins and needles; curse an item and gift it to the target

Dreams & Sleep - fill a sachet with herbs associated with restful sleep and peaceful dreams and hang above your bed; place the sachet under your pillow; wash your bedsheets and sleep clothes with a few drops of lavender or chamomile essential oil; alternately, choose fabric softener that is lavender scented to wash your sheets or sleep clothes with; create a sigil for peaceful dreams or dream recall, charge under the light of the moon, and place it under your pillow before you go to sleep; drink mugwort, peppermint, or valerian root tea before bed for vivid, lucid dreams; drink chamomile tea before bed for restful sleep; drink lemon verbena (vervain) tea before bed for dreamless sleep; when bathing at night, create a sachet that matches your intent and place in the bath or shower

Glamours - anoint the containers of beauty and hair products with Pluto oil or moon water (for transformation and metamorphosis); leave the item you wish to cast a glamour on under the full moon; charge a talisman with the effect you wish to have on others and wear when you go out for the day; add Pluto oil and moon water to a bath for a full body glamour (write your intent with bath crayons on the tub or shower wall for an extra boost); create an energetic shield over yourself in which the outside mirrors what you want others to perceive of you

Goal & Wish Manifestation - write your intent on a bay leaf and burn it; turn your intent into a sigil and store it in a jar filled with herbs or other items that represent said intent; place a written description of your goal or wish in the center of a crystal grid using stones that are associated with manifestation and power; place a coin in moon water while focusing on your wish or goal (leave container under direct moonlight overnight so that it may charge); light a candle whose color matches your intent and while focusing on your goal or wish, blow out the candle

Personal Power & Effects - create or enchant a talisman that represents your intent, charge it, and wear it on your person; take a ritual bath filled with herbs that are associated with personal power; create a potion from herbs associated with power and drink in the morning

Warding - sprinkle a mixture of protective herbs around the perimeter of your home while walking clockwise; leave protective crystals at each corner of your space; hang a protective amulet above the door to your space; wear a protective amulet for personal protection; create a protective witch bottle and bury near your front door; plant herbs or flowers that are associated with protection outside at each corner of your home; draw a protective sigil or symbol on the outside of your front and back door with sun water; hang witch balls or a witch’s ladder near your front door; create an energetic shield and place over yourself, your loved ones, or your entire home

Law of Inertia- Motivation Spell

Y’all know I am am a huge science nerd- this is the product of that. 

This spell is designed for those days when you have a lot to do- and cannot bring yourself to do any of it. This has been happening to me a lot recently (hello depression) and I absolutely hate feeling lethargic- especially when it has an impact on my practice and my school work. 

So this is my solution. Super simple and effective-pure intent.

You will need: 

A detailed list of things to do. A great tip for spoonie witches: break things down into the smallest tasks if you need to.  Seems silly-really helps. 

One caffeinated beverage of your choice. If it’s late at night, try something with natural sugars (like fruit). 

Things to make sigils (optional)

One charged crystal of choice (optional) 

Step 1:

Have you: eaten, drank water, slept, taken all of your medication, and showered in the last 24-36 hours? If the answer is no, do that first, unless you are using this spell to motivate yourself for self-care. In either case, spells are much more effective when your body and mind are well-maintained. 

Step 2: 

Make/acquire caffeinated beverage of choice. 

Step 3: 

Plant your feet firmly beneath you, hip-width apart. Roll your shoulders down and back. Take a deep breath and exhale, focusing on how the air moves through you. The air is always in motion, never completely still. Even once it’s inside our lungs, it continues to flow in and out of our cells as it travels through our system. (trust the anatomy nerd)

Step 4: 

Take a long drink of your beverage. As you swallow, focus on the energy inside the cup and how it is becoming a part of you. Think of Newton’s First Law of Motion: An object in motion will stay in motion. The energy in your drink will stay in motion inside your cells. 

Step 5: 

Finish your drink, and get moving. Repeat if necessary. 

You also have the option of keeping a charged crystal in your pocket or wearing it as pendant. (Clear quartz works great for general energy). You can also draw energy producing sigils on your list of things to do, your mug, or your skin. The main goal is to get moving, because it’s easier to continue than it is to start.

A Witch Morning:

Many witches have their own personal morning routine to get ready for the day. This is my personal morning routine and tips for those who are yet to have, but want one.

1. Get up early, before the sun rises. Begin by stretching your sleepy limbs, followed by 5 to 10 minutes of meditation.

☀(Tip: If you’re bad at getting up early, set an alarm earlier each week until you reach your goal.)

2. Make your bed and tidy up your room. This gives a sense of organization and clarity. Opening your windows invites the cool morning air into your home.

☀(Tip: Do chores the night before. Tomorrow you will be grateful! You can clean your room the night or day before, so you’ll only have to make your bed in the morning.)

3. Eat a good breakfast. My favorite is greek yogurt with berries, homemade granola, and honey drizzled over the top.

4. Prepare some tea! Use a tea associated to your intention. I drink peppermint tea in the morning to clear my brain fog and give me the much-needed motivation for the day.

5. (Optional) Eat your breakfast and drink tea outside as the sun rises. Take time to practice mindfulness with the tastes, textures, and aromas of your meal. Feel the gentle warmth of the rising sun on your skin, smell the fresh morning air, and listen to the birds sing.

6. (Optional. If yoga isn’t your thing, exercise… Or not. Your choice.) Set up your yoga mat either in your personal yoga space, or outside. Light incense and place crystals associated with your intention around your mat. Personalize your yoga routine with correspondences of each pose. I begin with the sun salutation to welcome the rising sun. Yoga increases your vibration and further clears your mind for the day ahead.

7. Clean yourself up. EVEN IF YOU’RE NOT GOING ANYWHERE, DO IT. Take a shower, wash your face, get into some clean clothes, and anything else that you do to get ready such as makeup and color correspondences. You can listen to your favorite music or sing while doing this.

☀(Tip: Set out some clothes and take a shower the night before if you have to.)

8. Now that you’re cleansed and have your daily intention set, you can continue with any morning spells and divination that you may do!
