Of course I had to combine my two fav manga, and designing djinn equips is so fun!
It's my crossover so I get to choose which character is which >:D!
Jokes aside it's explained underneath (big spoilers for both Magi and Sinbad no bouken):
Kakashi as Ja'far: they are my faves so I am completely biased obviously. But it's also their general appereance (white hair, gray eyes, pale skin...) and the whole "little fucked up indoctrinated assassin who changed thanks to a special person and decided to live by their ideals even when they lose that person, who then comes back and then leaves again". And their gentle but dangerous nature packed with their tragic love life. The lightning powers too.
Obito as Sinbad: I loosely translated the concept of "Hokage" in Naruto to Magi's "King" and so Obito, despite being very different in personality to Sinbad, is the King who genuinely wanted to make a better and more peaceful world but failed when he was manipulated by a superior evil being (Madara/David). At the end they were persuaded by the true king (Naruto/Alibaba). Also they both have that peak Bisexual energy.
I wanted to base the djinn equips of them all using terms and transformations from Naruto (I added a lot of details about them in these designs as always). In this case, picked Kaguya for Obito instead of the Jyuubi because the name sounds cooler :).
Rin as Yamuraiha: vibes. She’s one of the few generals that is a woman and I think it fits her seeing how the mages are quite fragile and serve more like supports. After all, medic nin aren't meant to fight and their first priority is to survive no matter what, in order to heal their allies. And then there's also the connection with water and the Sanbi.
Madara as David: evil mastermind behind everything who manipulated Obito/Sinbad. They have very similar insane-and-with-a-god-complex vibes too.
Naruto as Alibaba: I was conflicted between Alibaba and Aladdin but I picked Alibaba bc of the Hokage/King parallel, though I think Minato and Kushina fit better as Salomon and Sheiba than as Alibaba's parents, both because of ther personalities and because they play more of an active part in his story. His djinn vessel is a more complex version of his necklace bc I couldn’t think of any other precious object he has in the series besides Sasuke's headband.
Sasuke as Hakuryuu: pretty obvious. The revenge plotline, the betrayal of a loved family member, the dark desire for power and slow descent into corruption... and also the conflicts in their dynamic with Naruto/Alibaba. In general, they do share that "dark loner boy" aesthetic, too.
There's some small details from Orochimaru’s curse mark mixed with the Susano'o for his djinn bc Hakuryuu had two of them, but idk if he would actually be able to use either the curse mark or Amaterasu on top of his abilities as Susano'o.
Sakura as Morgiana: general aesthetic and abilities. Super strength and the pink/red color pallet. Though their personalities are very different, in this version maybe Sakura’s true personality ("Inner Sakura") was repressed and only comes out after she’s freed from slavery.
(I haven't given much thought about ships between team 7 in this au, feel free to let your imagination loose ^^)
I love how some of the characters fit so well with their counterparts, but the problem is that I have no idea who the four Magi would be. My first thought was the sannin as Sheherazade, Yunan and Judar, but I felt bad comparing Yunan and Judar to Jiraya and Orochimaru (sadly I don't really like them very much). And even then I had no one as Aladdin.
