Just wanted to shout-out a new manga I started recently—Veil—for how it defies the amatanormative standards of society.

In addition to the absolutely drop-dead gorgeous artstyle, Kotteri has a written beautiful story where the male and female MC’s are EXPLICITLY NOT in a romantic relationship; though they live together, often cuddle together, and many illustrations are drawn in a sensual or flirty tone, the mangaka explicitly stated that their relationship is somewhere in between romantic and platonic. The two simply and purely live life together, without the need for labels, which I find to be very beautiful indeed.

Sometimes, even though I know it’s not true, I can’t help but wonder if we’re all just gaslit into believing we want sex and finding things “sexy” or sexually attractive

It’s funny because I was totally confident in being aroace, not wanting that kind of relationship with anyone when I younger and first discovered myself, so unabashed and free, and now I can’t help but sometimes wish I could fall in love, that someone would fall in love with me so I can fill the gaping maw in my heart that cries out to be loved.

I know romantic love isn’t the “highest level” of love, but I crave it, I think because I crave the idea that someone would love me and be so openly affectionate.

But I know I can’t fall in love and a romantic relationship in practice cannot happen and would not be truly desirable. I’m merely creating an unrealistic ideal of a romantic relationship.

It’s all so complicated

I think the saddest lie in this world is that the absolute pinnacle, the supreme expression of love is sex.

Not that sex isn’t an expression of love or intimacy, but to reduce the deep emotional connection of a romantic relationship to being just “friends but with sex” is so sad and messed up.
