Sleep Token Caramel Analysis
“Right foot in the roses, left foot on a landmine”
A possible ultimatum given the sword of Damocles reference in the music video, stating that Vessel can continue with Sleep Token if fans can learn to respect their wish to stay anonymous (the roses) or an end to the band will come because they can’t give the guys any human decency (the landmine and the sword of Damocles)
Possibly him being torn over the whole situation, involving his identity being so easy to find now days. He can choice to ignore the lack of privacy/ not speak on it anymore and pretend to be okay with the situation (roses), or explode and let out his anger and fear of the situation take over, possibly losing the fans and the band in the process (landmine)
"They can sing the words while I cry into the bassline"
A reference to all the times he’s broken down on stage and/or hasn’t felt good enough to sing and refused to let the show be cancelled, instead putting his trust in the fans to sing while he watches and marvels at the dedication of the crowd
Possibly a claim that should Sleep Token end, fans will still be singing, but Vessel will feel like he has lost it all and cry over the death of his project
“Wear me out like Prada, devil in my detail”
A nod to all the merch that’s been produced with his masked face, the devil being the fact we know he’s hiding behind the mask
Wearing him out in the sense of how he had become sick the night of Wembley, likely from touring and using his voice so much that year
"I swear it's getting harder even just to exhale”
The fact that he now has so many eyes on him at all times even out of the mask due to the constant identity leaks making him feel like he’s incapable of making mistakes anymore, or has to watch his back for the “fans” that might be just right around the corner
The constant anxiety and paranoia leaving him at a steady level of nearing an anxiety attack because of every move he makes or every time he sees his real name anywhere, that is a Sleep Token based sector of the internet
"I’m sick of trying to hide it every time thеy take mine”
This is his final straw; he’s snapping and drawing his line in the sand. This is Vessel’s last stand and request for us to finally listen to the wish to stay anonymous. He’s done playing nice about this, the song is him fighting back.
“Stick to me like caramel/Walk beside me till you feel nothin' as well”
He wants us to stay loyal if we’re true fans, to start to lose our anger over the so called fans actions, whether that be for the better or worse, Vessel wants us to become numb like he hopefully is/will be
Should Sleep Token be disbanded, he might be hinting that as the time goes by afterwards that we should follow his lead and listen to them until we no longer have a connection to the music, until we feel nothing for the music or band anymore
“They ask me, "Is it goin' good in the garden?"’
A reference to Take Me Back to Eden. If he’s back in the garden now, surely those in the loop on the lore are willing to play along and ask him how it is to be there
Also someone asking him if he’s okay mentally, the garden being his mind/sanity. This would also create another spin on the previous album title, him now asking to no longer feel insane
Given the fact he’s been doxxed, yet I refuse to look at that information if it even still exists online, the “fans” could literally be asking if a hypothetical garden that Vessel has is doing good
“Say, "I'm lost, but I beg no pardon"
If I’m remembering correctly one of the many different things involving Arcadia is the phrase “lost in arcadia”, meaning he may be lost in another place, but he won’t ask for help to bother another person
The “I’m lost” being a response to those creeps that might know if he has a literal garden, and not wanting to give them more information of his personal life. A simple way to say “I don’t know what you’re talking about” all the while refusing to ask for clarification if this person seems sure that he if Vessel
He also could be saying he’s lost mentally because of all the shit that’s happened to him, and refusing to ask from help because he can’t be sure who to trust on these matters anymore besides his bandmates who are going through the same things
“Try not to talk about how it's harder now”
He could mean how its harder to feel safe and comfortable in his day to day life, or that its harder to breath freely as he comes to terms with a new constant level of anxiety/paranoia given the most recent situation
He again, may not feel comfortable talking to many people anymore about what he’s been going through due to the “fans”, leaving him as simply feeling like he has to just try and not bring it up, because who can he trust to be his confidant besides his friends dealing with the same stuff?
“Can I get a mirror side-stage?/Looking sideways at my own visage, gettin' worse”
He’s asking for someone to be there during shows to reflect his original hopes for the band, or maybe even himself so he doesn’t lose who he was when this all started
He’s wanting to compare who he is now, to who he was under the mask at the start of Sleep Token, he wants a side-by-side of these two versions of himself so he can see what all has changed for the better and for the worse
“Every time they try to shout my real name just to get a rise from me”
An obvious reference to all the fans that shout their names at shows, wear past projects’ merch to those shows, and comment their names on most if not all social media posts
“Acting like I'm never stressed out by the hearsay”
He’s saying that even if he doesn’t show it, those aforementioned actions have left him stressed and shaken
Given the fact he is often sexualized by those who like “dark romance” the rumors this hearsay could be about is in the same vein as the over sexualization and harassment he faces when people yell it at him during rituals
“I guess that's what I get for tryna hide in the limelight”
He thinks all of the harassment, sexual comments, and doxxing of his friends and himself is his fault for insisting on wearing a mask that he claims to be nothing without. The privacy he has wished for has been broken, and he sadly got three of his friends in the same situation as him, no hint of a personal life anymore
“Guess that's what I get for having 20/20 hindsight”
Vessel knows now that this has been the cost of finally getting big, but only afterwards, hence the fact he says “20/20 hindsight”, he didn’t think this would happen until now after the storm has started
“Everybody wants eyes on 'em, I just wanna hear you sing that top line”
He’s comparing other artists in similar levels of popularity who cling to that fame and the eyes that follow their every move to the fact he made clear that this isn’t something he ever wanted. He only wanted fans to listen to the music and sing along
The top line in this whole song is the only one that has no connection to events that the band has dealt with due to wearing the masks and deciding to be anonymous
“And if you don't think I mean it, then I understand”
“Fans” claim that their identities being known was never that big of a deal, no matter what Vess claimed due to the way he stated it as if it was part of the lore that creates the story of the group. He understands that this has been the claim of those people for a long time now and doesn’t really fault them maybe?
A reference to the conversations with Sleep from the Teeth of God North American tour where the god asked if Vessel fakes his tears on stage. He replied that he doesn’t, but would understand if fans believed he did due to the frequency with which it occurs
“But I'm still glad you came, so let me see those hands”
Even with all this happening, he still is glad people love the music enough to come to the concerts and sing along
“I'm fallin' free of the final parallel”
A possible reference to Euclid’s line “Yet in reverse you were all my symmetry/A parallel I would lay my life on”. He could be saying that we were that parallel given that we claim he has saved some of us, but he believes it to be the other way around. Thanks to the people that have no common sense or decency, he no longer feels the line from Euclid to be accurate, and is now free of his closer connection to some of the fans
“The sweetest dreams are bitter/But there's no one left to tell”
He’s simply telling fans the truth, that his greatest dream has become a bitter and dark nightmare that he can’t seem to want to face any longer. There’s no one left to tell because all the closest people in his life either know of the predicament he’s in already or are in the same boat as him. The fans are the last ones left to tell, but because he has now released the song to us, there isn’t anyone else to tell
“Too young to get bitter over it all/Too old to retaliate like before”
He feels like he can’t dislike the situation because he’s too young in comparison to the other, much older musicians that get to make the comments that he wishes he could say without any backlash or judgement. It could also be that he thinks the band hasn’t been around or as popular long enough for him to be allowed to find himself being upset over the situation yet, again most bands that get to rightfully say that they can’t stand the fans have been a largely popular group for a lot longer than Sleep Token has.
I myself can’t think of one instance were in Sleep Token history to my knowledge that Vessel has taken the metaphorical mask off to speak to us on any matters similar to what he’s trying to get across in this song. The closest I would assume would be when during a festival he spit some water at a few guys that were barricade just to be assholes
“Too blessed to be caught ungrateful, I know”
A direct reference to the band going big in 2023 with Take Me Back To Eden. While he admits he’s grateful for the huge increase in fans and online foot traffic, but that’s also what caused an increase in harassment and lack of privacy since then. He can’t outright say that he wishes that the band hadn’t gotten so big, nor that he’d even started the group in the first place without seeming to be ungrateful when other bands took even longer to reach their level of fame, or never have to begin with
“So I'll keep dancin' along to the rhythm”
A music box theme plays throughout the song, and typically those boxes will have smaller dancers in them that of course dance to the rhythm. He’s comparing those figurines that are trapped to only dance and perform when others want him to. Even the song ends abruptly, akin to when a music box is done playing or is snapped closed in the middle of a song
“This stage is a prison, a beautiful nightmare”
To my knowledge, no one in Sleep Token has stopped a show in the middle of it or even canceled if the other members were still able to play. In terms of the lore, the shows won’t likely be stopped or cancelled because they are rituals and offerings to Sleep, you don’t just stop a ritual, you must finish it. He has lost his enthusiasm before due to the sexual harassment he’s faced via the catcalling and comments about his dick, but even with the clear change in mood he refused to stop the show
The beauty of a sold out stadium and crowd screaming for him, but sometimes also harassing him one way or another from that same crowd has made it a nightmare because now he’s trapped and made to stay in the limelight while dealing with those people
“A war of attrition, I'll take what I'm given”
He’s trying to tell us he’s wearing out and just wants to live without the fear of being doxxed again or not feeling safe to even be at his own home. He’s just going to let it happen now, because he doesn’t want to always be on defense when he doesn’t have the energy to do so anymore
“I thought I got better/But maybe I didn't”
He assumed he could handle the lack of privacy and how his mental health would be affected by it, and after it all he admits that he might have jumped into the deep end without realizing
“Tell me, did I give you what you came for?”
He’s asking if he’s given the “fans” what they wanted from the band, whether it’s the more metal like sound during this break down, seeing his reaction to their harassment, or even asking if the real fans if they got what they wanted with eh new music as a whole
