Title: The Part-Time Job

Summary: Merlin, with aspirations to be a doctor, ends up working as a barista at his local coffeeshop due to reasons he decides to keep well-hidden. When he had applied to the job, Merlin had expected grueling work with a satisfactory paycheck to make ends meet. What was supposed to be a simple part-time job ends up teaching Merlin more about life than any of his textbooks could have. In short: a modern!Merlin AU with coffeehouse romance, young adult drama, and secret insights into the barista life.

Warnings: Some explicit sexual content, implied/referenced self-harm, alcohol abuse, drug use, sexual violence, classist injustice, etc.

Merlin hadn’t meant for his magic to be revealed to Arthur like this. He had always pictured a romantic and emotional reveal, Merlin had the entire event planned out in his head for so long. The warlock wanted to show the man he loved the beauty and wonders of magic, he wanted to explain their destiny together, he wanted to show Arthur everything he knew about magic.

Instead, Merlin’s magic was revealed after being ambushed by bandits. Everything happened so quickly that it was almost hard to process. Merlin felt the pinch of the bandit’s dagger that grazed his skin as it pinned him to a large oak tree behind him. Arthur was outnumbered and Merlin panicked, the warlock could feel his magic burst out of him, burning through his skin like fire. The wave of magic unleashed such a forceful blast that the bandits died upon impact with the ground.

Merlin may have screamed when he unleashed his magic, but he couldn’t recall for sure, his mind was hazy, the only thought that he could form was ‘protect Arthur’

Arthur spun around to face Merlin, catching a glimpse of the fading gold in the warlock’s eyes. Merlin swallowed hard as Arthur approached him.

“Merlin… oh my gods” Arthur rasped as he moved Merlin’s arm in order to see where the dagger hit. The king let out a relieved laugh, “it’s just your shirt… you’re okay” he exclaimed pulling the dagger out of Merlin’s shirt

Merlin took in a jagged breath, “for now”

Arthurs eyes darkened, as if he just was able to process the event that had just unfolded, “you’re a sorcerer”

Merlin shifted his gaze towards the ground, he refused to look at Arthur until the cold sharp tip of the dagger was gently pressed on his chest, right above his heart.

“Merlin, look at me”

Merlin’s gaze slowly shifted towards Arthur, his eyes wide and dilated

“I can push this into your heart and kill you” Arthur stated, although his tone made it sound more like a question.

Merlin simply nodded, not trusting his own voice.

“but you can use magic to stop me… can’t you?” Arthur asked, his voice was trembling, as if he was about to cry

“No” Merlin answered simply, “because I won’t hurt you, ever”

Arthur pressed the dagger harder against Merlin’s chest, the warlock grimaced but didn’t protest. “Even if I try to kill you”

Merlin nodded softly “I told you, I’m happy to be your servant until the day I die”

“I condemn people like you and yet you are willing to sacrifice your life to protect me”

“Yes, and I will do everything to protect you, no matter what happens to me”

Arthur didn’t make an attempt to stop the tears from spilling out from his eyes, he was trembling, never in his life has he been so confused and scared. “why?” he croaked out

Merlin hesitated, part of him wanted to explain their destiny, but Merlin knew that was just the excuse he had been telling himself in order to deny how he felt. “because… my life would have no meaning without you in it…” Merlin trailed off, he knew that he had waited way too long to tell Arthur what he meant to Merlin. “I love you more than you’ll ever wrap your head around”

Arthur shakily lowered the dagger from Merlin’s chest, gasping at the trail of blood that leaked from the cut. Arthur used his sleeve to wipe the blood away mumbling apologies. Merlin grabbed Arthurs wrist, and smiled gently.

Arthur stopped to examine Merlin’s face, a whirlwind of thoughts overwhelming him. Arthur placed his palm against the cut on Merlin’s chest before leaning in and as gently as possible kissed his servant. The warlock smiled into the kiss wrapping his arms around Arthurs neck. For the king, the kiss seemed to last forever and also not nearly long enough. Arthur pulled away just enough to rest his forehead against Merlin’s, “I love you, oh gods, I love you” Arthur whispered softly.

Merlin let out a soft laugh “then kiss me again you clotpole”
