“MARCUS.” Charley gasped, clutching at her collar. “I am not being dramatic at all when I say that that song is the best thing that has ever happened to me, nay, this world!” She put a hand on her forehead, as if she were about to faint. “How are you supposed to be my best friend when you don’t know every word to “I Feel the Earth Move”?”

Marcus felt themselves laughing at the dramatics, happy to see that this newest camp activity hadn’t damped her spirits. Though they were 100% sure she had skipped out on the entire thing, which was fine. “I know they’re split, but I’m more of a Jackson Five kinda person. But-” Marcus wheeled around, holding a single finger up (a tad dramatically, if only to match Charley). “I solemnly swear to at least listen to the lyrics tonight as you’re belting them directly next to my ear. Deal?”

“Honestly, I’m not going to argue with you - I’d just as soon not think about the game, really. I feel like I’m getting a bit too old to keep doing this.” Elle laughed ruefully, rubbing her arm; she couldn’t even remember what she had done to it, but it hurt. And where she could help literally everyone else with their pain, there was no one to help her with hers. But maybe Aiden would have something to help. “Is it time for the campfire yet?”

“I definitely thought about taking a step back and letting the younger ones take the lead,” Marcus admitted. They hadn’t, because being camp counselor meant leading and showing that you were capable of holding your own, but it had definitely crossed their mind. It helped that Marcus was still a child at heart, still having way too much energy than was healthy. “The harpies are setting it up as we speak. I sent the rest of the cabin to the showers before dinner.”

“People have been begging for our rendition of ‘I Feel the Earth Move’ for months now.” Charley reminded them. “I say we have to give the people what they want, Marcus. Who are we to deny the world of Carole King?” She gripped her hands together in front of her heart. “Have I mentioned how much I love her?” No one spoke to Charley’s heart and soul like Carole King. Charley was obsessed.

Marcus had definitely heard the song at least once-- after all, it had only come out a couple years ago. But they hadn’t actually given it much of a listen. “You’ll forgive me if I only pretend to know the lyrics, I hope.” Charley would sing loud enough for the both of them, they knew that much.

“Oh yeah, totally!” Charley shook her head, vigorously. “For sure, thought we had it, and then…well, you know. That one thing happened.” She shrugged. “Such a shame. Oh well! Capture the Flag is over and done with. Is it time for marshmallows yet?”

“Mhm, mhm.” Marcus nodded for a moment like they actually believed Charley, before another grin broke across their face. “Marshmellows just might be the best part of the event, I’ll give you that. What do you think they’ll have us sing at the bonfire tonight?”

“I know they got us there in that last half, but you gotta admit, we were doing pretty good for ourselves in the beginning.” Not that Marcus was a particularly good fighter themselves. But part of being a cabin counselor was making sure the rest of the cabin felt good, whether they won or lost. And hell, they’d pass around those good vibes to the rest of the camp too.

“All the time. I probably develop a slight crush on someone with each job I do. As an artist you can learn so much about someone in such an intimate way that you can’t help but fall a little bit in love with them for a short period of time. But I think that’s natural, and often times those people can end up becoming your lifelong friends.”
