The majority of people in this world will never vacation abroad, and most will never attain native-level mastery of the English language. Why mention these two truths? Because, unlike what the media often portrays, the world isn’t full of people who can easily travel overseas or speak fluent English. It’s just something you have to accept.

Being on American social media is often framed as a privilege but we’re not the ones who should be grateful. You Westerners should be, because you have the privilege of getting to know us. You’re exposed to people from vastly different cultures and perspectives, something many never experience.

So count yourself lucky. Plenty of people don’t have the chance to truly understand others, even while living right at the heart of the empire surrounded with all the privileges.
