Things Beyond Things from the Hammersmith Eventim Apollo

in London last night, after performing Things Beyond Things, Devin stepped back from the microphone and took a moment to himself as the crowd went wild, applauding the performance. However, fans of Ocean Machine knew what came next- there is a sudden, powerful scream after about ten seconds of silence on the record after Things Beyond Things, it is the final moment, the scream that ends the journey through the album. People behind me started to yell, “Come on Devin! Do it!” “Come on!” Devin was obviously out of his comfort zone during this performance and his voice was worn down, he seems to have a complicated relationship to Ocean Machine- I’m sure that regressing to his state of mind 20 years ago took an emotional toll on him. I was just quietly cheering him on, trying in some way to sort of send him the energy to pull off the scream. Then, he approached the microphone, and at this point the crowd is absolutely going nuts, he puts both hands around the microphone and bows his head- all of the lights turn a blaring white light, and they all turn in unison and come to spot upon him in front center stage, and he looks up, and the scream just RIPS from him, and it climbs, and climbs and climbs and gets higher and higher until it finally breaks, and then it’s all over, and the man literally sinks to the floor. At this point he is visibly shaking on the ground, and he takes a few seconds to steel himself before standing up again and thanking the audience for 20 years of support. It was something so special to witness. It was the painful sound of emergence from the past back to the present. I was so moved.

Sciencey death metal. Enough said.

Definitely recommend this album if you want to get into prog.
