With an abhorrent childhood, it’s really no wonder that Michael Bruce Ross developed into a sadistic serial killer. Born in Putnam, Connecticut, his mother took an interest in abandoning her family. On return, she partook in savagely beating all four of her children, but she saved the worst for Michael. This abuse combined with his mother’s mental health led to her being sectioned on a number of occasions as Michael was growing up. When Michael was 6-years-old he was sexually abused by his teenage uncle who had been babysitting him; this uncle later went on to commit suicide. Regardless of the abhorrent trauma Michael had endured, he excelled in school and went on to attend Cornell University in Ithaca, New York; he dreamed of owning his own farm. He dated a number of beautiful co-eds but these would always fail due to the disturbing and violent sexual fantasies that he was harbouring. Before long, these fantasies became realities and Michael began to stalk young women; this would later lead to rape. In 1981, not long after his graduation, Michael was arrested after kidnapping a 16-year-old girl. He dragged her into the woods but was interrupted by the police. When he was released on $500 bail, he subsequently began his murder spree that would leave 8 young women dead. On 14 May, 1981, 25-year-old Cornell graduate student, Dzung Ngoc Tu, was reported missing. Her body was later discovered discarded in a gorge, raped and murdered. Although Ross was never convicted of this murder, it is generally believed to be his first murder, at least the first one to which he confessed. Over the next three years, Ross went on to rape and senselessly kill at least seven other teenage girls and young women. Two of these victims were teenage hitch-hikers, He was finally apprehended when his car was linked to a number of the killings. He readily confessed to the murders and aided authorities in discovering the bodies. Sentenced to death, Ross supported his own death sentence towards the end of his life, claiming he wanted to spare the victims’ families any more pain. He was executed on 13 May, 2005, denying a last meal and any last words.

Real-time magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) refers to the continuous monitoring (“filming”) of moving objects in real time. Because MRI is based on time-consuming scanning of k-space, real-time MRI was possible only with low image quality or low temporal resolution. Using an iterative reconstruction algorithm these limitations have recently been removed: a new method for real-time MRI achieves a temporal resolution of 20 to 30 milliseconds for images with an in-plane resolution of 1.5 to 2.0 mm. Real-time MRI promises to add important information about diseases of the joints and the heart. In many cases MRI examinations may become easier and more comfortable for patients.
