The other three, however, they’re unaware. They think Cliff is beside them. They’re busy with the crowd, the energy, the attention. They’re in a wall of black and white, unmovable colors. The crowd shines a yellow, warmth and embrace.

So beautiful it hurts

This is exactly what I imagine James smelled like in the late ’80s and early ’90s.

Sweat and warm skin, the raw scent of a body under the blinding stage lights.

Alcohol, warm beer, bourbon, Jack Daniel’s drunk straight from the bottle in a backstage room soaked with smoke and humidity.

Worn leather from black jackets that had lived too much, dusty boots, belts scratched by metal.

The iron-like smell of guitar strings overheated by his fingers, mixed with dried blood on cracked calluses and that metallic taste left hanging in the air after the show.

The smell of backstage smoke and tobacco permanently soaked into clothes.

An old-school cologne, aggressive and musky, with notes of pine, patchouli, and something spicy, almost animalistic, lingering on the skin until the next morning.

And underneath it all, the hot, dry air of a California summer, a dirty, warm, wild scent.

Like scorching metal under the August sun.
