"Yeah, it’s amazing," he grinned, looking up. "You see any constellations or anything yet? I think I can see the Big Dipper from here." He looked over at her when she nudged him, and smiled. "Yeah, sure! It’s no problem. I haven’t gone stargazing for a long time, anyways."
He went quiet, crossing his arms over his chest and staring up at the stars. Valentin stifled a yawn—it was probably getting early in the morning by now—but tried to stay awake nonetheless.
"I don't see it..." She said softly, scooting closer to Valentin slightly to see. "Oh wait! Yes, I do! I don't know how I didn't see that before." Johanna laughed a bit, pushing herself up with her elbows. Lying down might do nothing but make her fall asleep.
And one look at Valentin told her he wanted to sleep, too. "Are you sleepy? It's kinda late--" What else was she going to say? Oh boy, she forgot.
A Pair of Goggles | MetallicBird
Almost to the main counter, Lovino stopped in his tracks, the candle wobbling in his hands. He swallowed, heavily, but turned. The flame glanced off the angles of his face, chasing the shadows from the hollows of his cheeks. His eyes glinted in the darkness, but he spoke quietly. “S’not like you can’t guess.”
He was still, but his muscles were tensed, like a tightly coiled spring, knees bending just slightly as he subtly shifted his stance. He glanced to either side until he spotted the watch nestled in a box on the counter. There it is, he thought.
This man looked very scary, to say the least. Perhaps it was just the angle the light was brushing over his features, or something else. Johanna didn't know, but the point was that he scared her and she really just wanted him out of the shop without losing consciousness.
"Okay, let's make a deal, yes? Tell me what is it you want, and I'll give it to yo--" She followed his gaze. Tightening her grip on the bat, she swallowed the rest of the sentence. Why was the watch even there? It wasn't for sale. "Goggles. You want goggles, yes? Just pick a goggle off a shelf--not that one-" Johanna pointed at the shelf on which the goggles sat, "-and leave. I won't tell the officers about this encounter."
-
Valentin was surprised when he felt her grip the back of his shirt tightly, and glanced over his shoulder at her. Gripping the blankets in one arm, he held onto the railing of the staircase with his free hand. Valentin stopped on the second step and looked back at Johanna. “No, they’re completely safe, I promise. I go up and down these stairs at least twice a day, and they haven’t failed me yet.”
He started climbing up the stairs once more, but slowly, so Johanna wouldn’t worry as much. When he made it up to the roof, he set the blankets on the ground, layering them so the concrete wouldn’t be right against their backs. Valentin placed one last blanket on top of the pile—they’d use that one to keep warm—then crawled under it. He held up the edge of the blanket for her to climb under as well. “There’s a pretty nice view up here, right? Good thing it isn’t too cold.”
Johanna would've helped him set the blankets. However, she was unsure as to what exactly he was doing, and so decided to stand back and just watch him. When he was done, she crawled into the blanket, enjoying the warmth, before laying on her back.
"Ah! The sky's so pretty tonight, don't you think?" She exclaimed happily, pointing at the fairly starry sky. That was the most they'd see in a city, so Johanna honestly didn't mind. Turning to him, she nudged his side a bit, offering him a bright smile. "Thank you!"
-
That’s alright, dear.
It’s in China.
Oh! [nods] I think I have an idea now!
[guess who's feeling extremely stupid now]
So... what's your name?
-
"Huh? No, it’s not stupid. Besides, you’ve been wanting to go stargazing for a while, right?" He nudged her, offering a smile. It was a relief that the wind wasn’t gusting like it had been earlier, and he followed behind her. When they got to his house, he quietly opened the door. "Мама? Татко?" he called quietly, glancing around. "I think my parents are asleep, so we should probably be quiet."
Valentin slipped his hand out of Johanna’s and went inside his room, where he grabbed a few blankets. “The staircase at the back of the house leads up to the roof. We can go up there; the view is really nice.”
Johanna followed him in complete silence, peering into his room curiously. She had never seen his room before, so her curiosity was justified. When he got the blankets, her hand instantly grasped the back of his shirt. Getting lost in a building she wasn't very familiar with wasn't how she wanted to spend New Year-- no matter how exciting it might sound. Some weird guy could murder her for all she knew.
At that thought, her grip tightened significantly. Valentin wouldn't let that happen, right? Yeah, he wouldn't. "These stairs look kind of dangerous..." She murmured, unaware of the fact she had said it out loud.

Yes I am! It’s very nice there.
You’ve not heard of it, have you?
I-- uh...
[sighs, blushing softly]
No, I am sorry... geography isn't my cup of tea, you see...
Johanna & Arthur | Intruder
-
Thick brows rose in momentary confusion as she broke down laughing. ‘What’s so funny?’ He wasn’t trying to be funny, though perhaps she had misinterpreted him in some way. “Here, here, breathe.” Arthur lightly patted her back as her features were thoroughly flushed red from the lack of oxygen he suspected. Whatever she was thinking must have been quite something. However, he wasn’t expecting her to repeat her brother’s words in order to make her point.
Emerald eyes widened in surprise for a second or two, before he averted his gaze with a small clearing of his throat. “Well…no, I don’t think I would have phrased it like that, but that doesn’t mean I’d let the man go scot free.” The only time he really cursed was mentally, in battle, or when he had stupidly stubbed his toe upon something. All instances, he thought, were reasonable times. However, he rarely heard a woman curse unless it was one of the maids, or cooks from the royal family when the royals weren’t around of course. But they were raised differently, from what Arthur understood. Just like Johanna, they weren’t raised to be ladies of the court, and since Arthur didn’t really care for them, he figured he would have to get used to woman cursing more around him. A slip of the tongue he could let go. After all, it didn’t make Johanna a bad person… just perhaps more modern than he was.
"Thank you." Arthur took the mug from her. He could already smell the sweetness of the chocolate assaulting his senses, though it wasn’t sickeningly sweet. Even if it was, he would bear with it. After all, Johanna had went through the trouble of making it, so the least he could do was enjoy it. With that in mind, he swirled the contents of the liquid before taking a small sip. "It’s…" Arthur paused to find the right word or way to describe it, "It’s not as sweet as I thought it would be. For some reason I thought you would have a much larger sweet tooth." It was sweet, and he wouldn’t ask for more sugar, though it wasn’t unpleasant. "It lovely, thank you."
Johanna blinked, unsure of what had caused him to suddenly act so... stiff. Perhaps it was something men did around ladies? Her guy friends always did it-- even her brother did that around her! Was it something she said? Probably, but she hadn't implied anything that could be considered out of this world, so what-- oh, right. She had cursed.
At least now she knew Arthur wasn't comfortable with people-- or maybe just ladies-- cursing around him. Johanna was aware that she had a bit of a rough vocabulary, but it wasn't until a few months past she found out those were considered a 'taboo' in society. But who could really blame her? Being raised on the streets with a brother whose lexicon could make even the rudest of sailors cower in fear, the Finnish lady had learnt things she probably shouldn't have. Still, she tried to get rid of the curse words in an attempt to be more ladylike. Oh, how she was failing at doing so-- who would've thought being a lady could be so hard?
Watching him expectantly with hopeful hazel eyes, Johanna waited for his reaction. Damn him for having such an unreadable expression. "Do you want it to be more sweet? Ah, I'll keep that in mind for next time..." She smiled, taking a sip from the drink. Johanna did have a big sweet tooth. Which was a pity for her, since sugar had to be used sparingly as it costed a bit too much. At least it seemed as so to the family.

He smiled and nudged her in response. ”Yeah, guess so.” Valentin followed suit and put his empty mug in the sink. “Oh—no, I’m fine, but thanks. Yeah, we could go outside and see if it’s better! And then maybe if everything is fine, we could go up to the roof to stargaze like you wanted to a couple weeks ago.”
Valentin tied his scarf around his neck and slipped on his coat. ”My parents might be asleep by now, so if we go over to my house, we’l have to be quiet when we go inside. I’d hate to wake them up.”
"Ah-- that was just a stupid thought." She murmured with a faint blush on her cheeks, rinsing the mugs quickly and leaving them in the sink to clean later. It really was stupid-- not everyone enjoys staring at the sky in silence. But if Valentin was really willing to do as she wished-- gosh, he really was a sweetheart--, then Johanna supposed it would do no harm.
She picked off Lauri's coat from the hook before opening the door, squeezing her eyes shut to protect them from the expected gush of wind. When none came, Johanna peeked out to see, and beamed. "It's a bit colder, but that's all! Come!" She took his hand and pulled him out, a slight spring in her step.

Indeed it is!
[ grins ]
I’ve had it since I was younger. It’s from Macau.
[smiles and nods as if she knows what Macau is] [she's also going to assume it's a place and pray for the best]
That sounds nice. Are you from there?
-
Thank you very much, dear.
Where did you get it?
Oh, it's my mom's actually. I think she got it from some tiny shop across the park. Where did you get that fan from? It looks like it'd be very useful for the warm days!
What a lovely outfit.
[blinks] Ah? Thank you, sir. Your fan is very pretty!

"I don’t know, both are probably somewhat affectionate. I mean, we greet people with a kiss on each cheek sometimes." He rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly, not really wanting to tell her that he wanted to kiss her because he might have feelings for her. That’d be even more embarrassing, especially if she didn’t feel the same. Best keep that under wraps for now.
Valentin glanced up when her father came in to get vodka, and offered a smile as a greeting. He went back to sipping his cocoa, absentmindedly staring at the floor. He looked up at Johanna when she spoke. ”Yeah, I agree with you, there.”
Johanna nodded, thinking back to her prior experiences with greeting Finns. Nope, no kisses. No hugs either. "...Finns aren't very affectionate, come to think of it. Hugs and kisses are reserved for family and couples." She then laughed softly, pressing her foot against his side lightly. "I guess we're just really close friends then!"
Finishing off the last bit of the drink, she placed her mug in the sink. "Do you want more? Or we could go check if the wind has died down a bit! I bet the sky is beautiful tonight!" She exclaimed, trying not to bring her hopes up.
-
Valentin was a little worried when Johanna seemed to blank out for a little while, and let out a sigh he’d been holding in when she went to go drink her hot chocolate. ”Oh, well… That’s good. And yeah, my parents probably would’ve done the same.” There was an awkward silence as he tried to figure out his reply. “Well… For starters, no, friends usually don’t kiss in Bulgaria. And… I guess I just wanted to kiss you, cause…” Valentin trailed off. “I don’t know, I guess I just wanted to. That’s probably weird, isn’t it?”
He finished the last of his hot chocolate, staying silent because he didn’t want to make the awkward tension worse by saying something stupid. There was a little bit of chatter from Johanna’s family that seeped through the walls, but other than that, it was relatively quiet in the room.
Johanna nodded, taking note of that. "Ah, really? Lauri told me East Europeans are very affectionate. Or maybe he said Mediterranean. Jeez, I don't even know. Geography is not my forte." She huffed, before raising her eyebrows at his pitiful explanation. "Yep, it is. Don't worry-- I guess I also get those urges every now and then." Well, not really, but she didn't want to hurt his feelings.
Bouncing onto the countertop, she began kicking her feet in the air as she drank. Oh, there came her father looking for some... ah, yeah, vodka. Why wasn't she surprised? But then again, she supposed it was a bit of a tradition. "You know, wine tastes really good. Vodka tastes like vinegar mixed with water."

He felt embarrassed for asking, and even more so when it looked like she was going to reject him by just walking away. He was happy when that wasn’t the case, but the embarrassment quickly returned when he realized that he’d gotten the chance to kiss her.
"…Okay, uh. Here goes, then?" He hesitantly cupped her cheek in his hand before leaning in, awkwardly trying to figure out how to angle his head. After a few more minutes of contemplation, he kissed her for a few seconds, before pulling away. His face flushed a shade darker, and he rubbed the back of his neck. "…Was that okay?"
Right when she was about to kiss back, Valentin pulled away. Johanna stood there dumbly, staring into the distance for a few minutes before she actually processed what had just happened. It was then color rose to her cheeks, and she quickly strolled towards the counter and took a large gulp of the hot chocolate.
"Ye-Yeah, it's was fine. Good thing my parents didn't walk in on us. They wouldn't be mad, but rather they'll start assuming weird things. Why did you want to kiss me, anyway? Do friends kiss in Bulgaria?" Too many questions, she knew. But she was flustered and not quite using her brain to its full capacity.
-
"Well, I can patch my own wounds up. But I have a friend— His name’s Viktor." He leaned forward towards Johanna, as if he was going to tell her a valued secret. "He’s also an asshole."
"Oh—alright. Do you need help going home, or are you going to be fine?"
"Viktor? I'd like to meet him someday!" She giggled, shaking her head at him. "You're unbelievable, badmouthing your friend." Johanna then said, grin widening. It was fun teasing Ivan-- she might do that more often.
"Nah, I'll be fine. Don't get into too many fights, okay?" She winked, turning around and threading her way to the door. Sure, she might've contracted a couple bruises from this journey, but at least she was finally outside.
