[I finally responded to two of my RPs! I'm dreadfully sorry for the wait. Today is the first day I've been able to force myself to write in a little while.
In terms of my life complications, some of my issues are resolved, but some aren't. I still don't know where I am going to live next month, but on Wed I should get a definitive answer to one of the places I applied to. If it's a no, then my anxiety will shoot up and I'll have to scramble for someplace else. This town...doesn't exactly have many good options that are safe with openings rn, and everything is overpriced. It's complicated, but I might be able to sublease from someone, but she has to see if she is even moving or not to agree. This place would be perfect, though. Let me tell you, my stomach is not taking all this uncertainty very well.]
Just a Taste | SteamtaliaRPG circle
Just a taste, Lovino thought, darting into the hold of an alley, where the walls seemed like a prison more than a shelter, even as the wind picked up. Grimacing, he wrapped his arms around his body to help threadbare clothes conserve heat. His teeth chattered. His body shook.
The festival goers seemed so blissfully unaware, as the booths around them swayed and flapped and skirts swept up amid squeals and laughter. There they chattered and sipped at piping hot drinks while scarfing down meat or fruit pies. Cufflinks and pocket watches gleamed under artificial lights. A swirl of mechanical fireflies bobbed and twisted like the stars themselves, which were no longer visible for the smog choking even the night sky. Somewhere, music wafted about as strong and tangible as the aroma of food and the stench of expensive oils and perfumes.
Lovino had been out to pick pockets, and he had for some time, his deft fingers plucking out spare coins or sometimes watches. He knew how to move in a crowd, how to duck and weave without detection. Like a shadow he was, caught in the rhythm of the evening and the easy steps that guided blossoming skirts and spinning partners.
But now he stood alone, done staring at the few coins he’d stuffed into his own pockets, his fingers jammed into his armpits for warmth. Just a taste, he thought. Just a taste of what that kind of life must be like was all he wanted.
It had been a while since he had been out like this. When he was twelve years of age, he remembered dancing, twirling around adorable ladies overripe with the aroma of concentrated, floral scents as well as pointing and snickering at how his best friend so stiffly danced. The only girl that asked Lutz to dance with him had been so brave to ask for a dance from his best friend, especially since Felix himself was at his friend’s side the entire time. When they actually had begun to dance, he remembered how wonderfully the two glided on the floor. With her skill, his friend’s fumbling feet glided with ease, and he recalled thinking that it would have been a fine festival if he hadn’t been so envious of the girl.
Feeling a startling squeeze at his rump from his dance partner, he yelped aloud and forced himself to shrug off the memory as everyone around him erupted into giggles. Ah, never mind the past. It was time to focus on the now. Why was he remembering such tiring things whilst he was out dancing? He should be celebrating his return! In Wales, there was no time for festivals and squealing ungodly notes of music late into the night. It was all work, work, work in his cousin’s home.
Maybe all that demand for work had changed him. Now that he thought about it, all he had done since coming back to London was visit friends, tinker idly with watches, and drink cups of tea as he stared out the watch shop’s window. He hadn’t moved an inch in the name of work.
He laughed. He was kidding himself. He didn’t miss work at all. However, there was something about work that made him smile at the end of the day. What exactly was he missing?
Out of the corner of his eye, he caught an unmistakable glittering, and instinctively looked up to catch its source: a shoddily dressed man shoving something into his pocket. Now, if the man were nothing special, Felix would have skipped over him and continued on dancing, but instead, he kept on staring. What was the man thinking wearing that thin attire at this time of year? What he had was no better than going around naked.
After the music quieted down and the dance had ended, he pecked his dance partner on the cheek. He watched her retreat to her retinue of friends with a shrill squeal. Chuckling, Felix fixed his coat and went off to a stall and ordered. He was famished. After giving the cook a small compliment on her complexion, he turned on his wooden leg with two, steaming pies in his hands. Now he was faced with the challenge of actually approaching the man.
With a deep breath, Felix strode over to the other and put on his best smile. He had gone through a list of possible opening lines in his head already, and when he stood in front of the man, he finally settled on one.
"Excuse me, Sir? You look poor and chilled to the bone. Would you like to taste a warm pie with me?" Ah, he had almost forgotten. He was frankly terrible with introductions.
Lovino had been so wrapped up in spotting his next target, that he hadn't noticed the other approach. He jumped, then mentally chided himself, jaw set, for not being more attentive. Any missteps and he could become the target, his own pockets emptied.
But then he noticed the pie in this man's hand, and an involuntary shiver seized him. He tugged his threadbare clothes tighter about himself. The colour rose in his cheeks, a tinge of warmth on an otherwise wind-stung face. This had to be some kind of trick. Grimacing, he narrowed his eyes, "What's the catch?"
A Pair of Goggles | MetallicBird
Lovino was always one for seizing opportunities, but staring at the scraps of metals and glass scattered across the workbench offered no inspiration. Slowly, he backed towards the door, eyes locked on the moonlight flooded through the open window, until, reaching backwards, his fingers brushed the wood of a doorframe. He slipped through with a sigh.
Unfamiliar with the layout of this shop, he relied on touch; his candle only offered a flickering corona of light in the darkness.
He grit his teeth as the floorboards creaked beneath his feet despite efforts to step lightly.
"It’s a shop" he reassured himself beneath his breath, "of course no one is here at this hour to even hear me."
In the next room, the street peered in through glass windows. Gas lamps caressed the faded glass of display cases and glanced across the rims of goggles hanging across the back wall.
Johanna was ready to bet ten pounds that something had possessed her out of the blue. One thing was not sleeping for a few nights— that happened rather often, so it didn’t face her much. Another thing was to walk around the tiny apartment aimlessly, including checking up on the shop.
Which in itself resembled a hunted house in the dark. While it wasn’t spacious in the least, there were several shelves and counters on which sat goggles of all shapes and sizes. Occasionally one would find a few statuettes here and there, but those were a minority. And, with Johanna’s imagination, one could say those shelves were monsters. Or at least looked like monsters. Oh, and one was moving…?
Honestly, who wouldn’t be scared out of their wits when they saw a man walking about at such ungodly hours of the night? Johanna sure was, but quickly got over it.
She watched him warily for a few moments. Making her way towards the counter as silently as she possibly could— why did this bastard carry a goddamn candle?—, Johanna picked up the bat left behind it. How convenient, a kid left it here one day, and never returned to get it back. Oh well, this would serve as her deadly weapon for now.
"…what do you think you’re trying to do, sir?" Though her voice was level and cold, Johanna herself was internally panicking.
Almost to the main counter, Lovino stopped in his tracks, the candle wobbling in his hands. He swallowed, heavily, but turned. The flame glanced off the angles of his face, chasing the shadows from the hollows of his cheeks. His eyes glinted in the darkness, but he spoke quietly. "S'not like you can't guess."
He was still, but his muscles were tensed, like a tightly coiled spring, knees bending just slightly as he subtly shifted his stance. He glanced to either side until he spotted the watch nestled in a box on the counter. There it is, he thought.
[Sorry for inactivity these past few days. I'm going through a LOT of stuff right now in terms of suddenly needing to find a new place to live and unexpected large bills and important decisions to make. It's hard to make myself write at the minute when everything is so stressful. I'll try tomorrow to reply to things after an important school meeting. ;;;]

*Wandering out into the square, which is all but empty as many have retreated into the apartments huddled around the courtyard. The first few flakes of snow have fallen, and the night is otherwise still. The wind howls through the alleys that retreat deeper into the city. Lovino wraps his arms around himself and shivers, but presses on. He has to steal tonight. It's been a few days since he's eaten last, and he hopes he can get enough for a few days' meals.*
