there’s a lot that can be said about the personifications of metal sonic’s depiction throughout the series. but I really like the direction this latest comics went with him, and specifically the impact of that familial / parental relationship he has with dr. eggman. although there was bout of his creation where a sort of defiance kill-switch was added, I deem this part of his life the “rebellious teenage years” specifically because his main objective outweighed his devotion to robotnik. however this programming didn’t exactly last forever, and was more like a mental whap to the nose when he stepped out of line. definitely not healthy by any means.
long since removed from his system, and now having given the chance to have been on his own without robotnik, he still returns to him immediately after being powered up running off. but for what reason we don’t really understand beyond the surface level “evil for the sake of evil” --- but I think it’s far more than that.
we see more than once that a few previous metal sonic types / robots have gained free will and decided to join sonic and his friends. it’s even noted by sonic in the IDW issues !
“ y’know, in a way, Eggman didn’t get a chance to stay reformed. Starline put him back on that path. But YOU... You just HAD to go back to him, didn’t you? You couldn’t be like Gemerl or Omega. You just HAD to be a one-note jerk. ”
in a way I really love how there’s little to no reaction for metal, despite the fact that we know he can talk & emote well. there’s a lot that I gauge from it, even if he doesn’t and that says a lot. you definitely need to know how to read him, which isn’t something that’s easy --- or something he allows for!
he allows himself to be more easily readable by those he trusts, which we can see in the flashbacks in these comics, and specifically around the doctor!
in this moment, to me, metal clearly doesn’t care what sonic thinks of him. even if sonic did try to give him a chance to be reformed, a chance at freedom, he doesn’t want to be away from eggman. nor does he wish to give up the life he’s accustomed to.
metal clearly has an ego, that much is very much clear. he’s well aware of how to sass, how to be cheeky, and even the times when a temporary truce is an optimal decision outside of eggman’s orders! he’s a fully realized being, but this is often misconstrued as not being aware he has the choice ! but why is he so connected to the doctor ? simply put, I believe all of the effort and care taken to fix him, rebuild him, upgrade him and so on had imprinted on both metal and eggman, as we can see in issue 12 !
nothing else seemed to work in gaining eggman’s memories back. nothing before metal, and he’s not at all confused at how he’s acting or isn’t remembering. but don’t mistake this as naivety, he knows full well his creator isn’t himself now as we see earlier.
metal fully and completely believes that eggman will remember him, remember everything, the moment he’s back. which may be why he rushed back so fast. a feeling of a sort of responsibility and obligation to him!
also note the way metal just [...] softens at the head pat.
because he knows he’ll always repair him. even once he remembers and yells for metal to hop up on the table so he can fix him, he has no qualms about it because that is his normal. there’s little that metal cares about, and it’s near impossible to hurt his feelings, he takes no issue with whatever harsh way he may refer to him. though I feel it should be noted that metal is perhaps the only one he doesn’t insult the instant he has his memory back. say what you will about robotnik, but there’s no way this man doesn’t view this robot as his destructo-son in some way. obviously he has selfish reasons for keeping metal sonic around, but he could have just as easily abandoned that project for something else like he usually does [...] but he doesn’t!
he’s certainly not above being bratty though, a bit stubborn in his own right. protective of the attention. but once more, he’s being far more readable now, lacking words but still obvious in intent which is a constant for him. however, the near inhuman and emotionally vacant sort of aura he has during missions is very different from his behavior in base. he’s still a killing machine ( which he is proud of, most of the time ) but a bit more chatty and expressive to the doctor, and the doctor alone.
simply put : doctor eggman is his person. he chooses him because he’s what he knows, he’s who he can count on and trust. there’s a labor of love sort of effort in how he’s continued to stick with his creation despite his many iterations, repairs, full rebuilds and so on. and I don’t think that’s gone unnoticed by Metal by any means.
