AND a race one since the most affected regions will be Africa, Asia and Oceania
as a friend pointed out, this headline makes it sound like supply will be dwindling. supply is fine. people will be *priced out*.
this is fucking MURDER.
insulin has been mass produced (from animal extracts) since -1923-. slow acting insulin has existed since the ‘50s, and ‘human’ genetically engineered insulin (derived from E. coli bacteria) has existed since 1982.
insulin treatment for diabetes is not some new or ‘unproven’ treatment. according to beyondtype1, “Humalog rapid-acting insulin came on to the market with a list price of $21 a vial in 1997.” adjusting for inflation, a vial these days should cost about $34 at most. instead, it costs over $300. there is NO reason for it to be steadily gaining in price to the point that diabetics are unable to afford their lifesaving medication, other than the sheer inhuman greed of pharmaceutical manufacturers.
let me reiterate: life without insulin (for Type 1 diabetics in particular) is a slow and painful death sentence. the ability to treat diabetes is a relatively modern phenomenon that has allowed countless people to live full, healthy lives. we should be expanding full covereage and access to insulin to diabetics the world over, and it should be FREE.
Have y’all heard about Open Insulin Foundation?
“ We’re a team of biohackers with a variety of backgrounds, and skills, and relationships to insulin and diabetes from many cities and countries around the world, including Oakland, California; Baltimore, Maryland; Paraiba, Brazil; Dakar, Senegal; Yaounde, Cameroon; and Puerto Rico. We’re working to develop the first practical, small-scale, community-centered model for insulin production to make insulin accessible to all. We envision a world in which communities in need have local sources of safe, affordable, high-quality insulin, and where people living with diabetes and their communities can own and govern the organizations that produce the medicine they depend on to survive.
What We Do
We are creating an open-source (freely available) model for insulin production that centers on sustainable, small-scale manufacturing and open-source alternatives to production. We are developing protocols to produce short-acting (lispro) and long-acting (glargine) insulin, working on developing open-hardware equivalents to traditional production equipment, are researching sustainable regulation pathways to bring our insulin to the public, and are building capacities for local, small-scale manufacturing.
How Do I Participate?
Our work would not be possible without the support of volunteers, interns, and community advisors. We welcome people of all backgrounds from all over the world to bring their enthusiasm, time, connections, and experiences, both in life and in work. Our volunteers promote us on social media, build equipment, run experiments, write reports and blog posts, facilitate meetings, connect with other organizations and groups, meet with experts in the field, run virtual events, and contribute in designing tools, resources, and methods of all sorts.
Potential Partners
We welcome collaboration with other groups that share our mission―community labs, academic institutions, patient advocacy groups, and NGOs.
Donate
Your donation will help us get closer to our goal. With a healthy financial situation, we can pay for lab supplies, acquire lab equipment, recruit scientists, and pay for consultation fees for regulation and manufacturing experts.”

can I get like $20 bucks for gas lmao I'm borrowing my mom's car and I ran down the tank getting to work and they still haven't paid me
venmo: coquiprincess
cashapp: $coquiprincess

So I'm not borrowing my mother's car anymore, so now I have no way except uber or Lyft to get to work reliably. My work will usually schedule me for 4 or 5 days, and after doing the math, I need about $140 a week to get to and from work, which is essentially a HUGE chunk of my paycheck. For this week until I can get paid I'm asking for $140 to get to and from work. I know I've leaned on donations a lot, and I'm eternally grateful for the help I continue to get. Please donate if you can and spread so I can survive until I get paid. Thank you so much. For context, this is my bank account right now after paying rent from my last donation post.
$0/140
️Me and my family are financially struggling, sinking more each month cause we’ve got many bills to pay and lately I feel like there’s no way out and I’m losing my mind and faith in everything I try to do. My dad got fired from work this year and I haven’t got any call from any job I’ve applied to! I even had to drop out of college and quit my dream of being a nurse. We’re currently in desperate need of food and we can’t afford anything right now, not even groceries! We already sold most of our stuff, I had to sell my laptop as you know I was a content creator on this website and I used to make many gifs and requests, but now I can’t do that anymore. I’m sorry if this is annoying but I don’t know what to do, please if you could donate something that would mean the world to us, if you can’t please reblog this post. PAYPAL | KO-FI
I don’t have venmo/cashapp, they don’t work internationally 🥺
Though the jokes that "since gay pride month is over, july is now gay wrath month" are funny and all, it's important to remember that July is ACTUALLY Disability Pride Month and y'all should really be focused on boosting disabled voices and issues this month! For instance, the fact that marriage equality doesn't actually truly exist in the United States for disabled people, or the fact that disabled people are forced to live in poverty or lose their disability benefits, or the fact that 1 in 5 people with chronic pain end up sufferring from alcoholism or other addictions, or how accessibility is still a daily battle for all of us, or how there are active hate groups on places like reddit who try to "call out" those they see as "faking" their disabilities.
This July, boost disabled voices. Talk about the issues that our community faces. Call out ableism.
Te Hiku Media gathered huge swathes of Māori language data. Corporates are now trying to get the rights to it
“In March 2018, Peter-Lucas Jones and the ten other staff at Te Hiku Media, a small non-profit radio station nestled just below New Zealand’s most northern tip, were in disbelief. In ten days, thanks to a competition it had started, Māori speakers across New Zealand had recorded over 300 hours of annotated audio in their mother tongue. It was enough data to build language tech for te reo Māori, the Māori language – including automatic speech recognition and speech-to-text.
The small staff of Māori language broadcasters and one engineer were about to become pioneers in Indigenous speech recognition technology. But building the tools was only half the battle. Te Hiku soon found itself fending off corporate entities trying to develop their own indigenous data sets and resisting detrimental western approaches to data sharing. Guarding their data became the priority because the only people truly interested in revitalising the Māori language were the Māori people, themselves.”
“‘They suppressed our languages and physically beat it out of our grandparents,’ Jones says. ‘And now they want to sell our language back to us as a service.’”
…
“It would mean entrusting data scientists with no connection to the language to develop the very tools that will shape the future of the language. And worst of all, it would mean that Māori would miss out on the economic opportunities created using the language that belongs to them, much like they didn’t see the economic benefits of the land that belonged to them.”
