Something about the bastardization of the story time and time again proves that nobody in power really cares about the people who would resonate with King’s Carrie White. A girl so ugly and repulsive she’s been removed from her own story. The societal need for women and girls to be constantly perceived as attractive is what fuels a fair amount of her torment in the book, but that person isn’t even allowed to exist on the screen. We cannot empathize with her; it isn’t allowed. It’s fascinating to me.

#it makes me really angry actually #i was excited for a possible adaptation of carrie by someone whose worked seems so adored #and then i saw the casting #and well... i never watched a carrie adaptation despite the book being so important to me in my youth and i'm not going to start now #people are really allergic to watching a girl/woman that is anything less than very beautiful and perfect #i think everything involved in that choice process just show how so many would actually side with the one bullying her in the book #and they don't want to be confronted with that reality #(i'll just add that she's not incredibly ugly in the book but she is seen as repulsive though)#for anyone who didn't read it:#"Carrie stood among them stolidly a frog among swans. She was a slightly chunky girl with pimples on her neck back and buttocks #no one would call her attractive. Her wet mousy hair dirty blonde yet completely without color.#It rested against her face with dispirited sogginess and she simply stood head slightly bent letting the water splat against her flesh and #carrie
