@mezepheles-official
I would never trick YOU into saying the secret word... unless you WANT to join the winning team.
(Respond when Lycan thing is over)
Marionette, it's been a while, hasn't it? I wanted to check up on you. You've been spending a lot of time with the good team lately and I was wondering if there is some sort of support you haven't been receiving from us.
I know that it is possible that we are in some sort of limbo beyond death and allignment, but until we can be sure of that, we'd best stay loyal to our teams.
@mezepheles-official
You and Cerenovus are the… less grating than Lleech, and you are always off in your own corner, so I talk to the good team, because they are around more often. Simple convenience. And for now, I’m willing to assume that we’re stuck here.
Stuck here in a different way than usual?
no, the same old same old.
Do you want to not be stuck here? Be rewarded or punished, separated, reassigned...?
(on the word reassigned, Marionettes eyes go wide)
Not reassignment. Knowing what little I remember of towns where I fail, it wouldn’t go great
Do they assign you to worse places if you do badly?
more of “if I lose then my memories are forcefully and painfully ripped from my body as I am dragged through the pits of hell before being placed blissfully unaware back into a new town under a random demon” if I lose rather than going to worse places
That sounds... unpleasant.
Understatement of the last however many years of my life, but yeah it’s not pleasant
So you want to make this town last?
I’m just glad that if I’m stuck in this purgatory, it’s with this town and this evil team, who actually cares about this dumb marionette me
We do care about you.
I’m glad you do. It just takes a long time to internalize.
Of course.
why do you still care. I’m outed evil, I can’t spread misinformation anymore.
There's always double bluffing, or gaining people's trust only to give them misinformation. Like Deviant and Lycanthrope. They like you. You could imply the host is someone it isn't, direct people away from the true host, or even try to trick Lycan into saying my word. The two of you would even be on the same team that way...
…
(Marionette seems to be considering that and mentally taking notes)
who even is the host, and I’m afraid I don’t even know the secret word. Will you tell me?
The host, the person whose death will end our peaceful little respite from the torments of hell, is Plague Doctor. And my word is Flabbergasted. You don't have to make anyone say it on my behalf, but if I catch you intentionally preventing people from saying it...
Well, I'll try to hear you out, and I won't withhold physical or emotional support, but I will be disappointed in you and less likely to trust you in the future.
Hey, don’t worry, I swear on my life and my memories of my mother that I won’t stop anyone from saying your word
Thank you. You're a good teammate, Mari.
(Marionette was glowing from the praise) I try :D
(Mez put a hand on Mari's shoulder) Your efforts are appreciated.
thank you!
(marionette is jubilant)
(Mez smiled slightly.)
I believe that is all I needed from you at the moment. If you need anything else, feel free to let me know, otherwise you are free to go.
Oh okay then! Have you seen any sunglasses? The outside hurts my eyes a surprising amount and I’d like it to not
I think I have a pair. I used to wear them when I was hungover, back in the day. That was before I started taking my life seriously.
It would be back at my house, and I might have to search a little, but I'll let you know when I find them. Or you can help me look if you want this to go faster.
I would prefer sooner, this headache is killing me
(Marionette snaps to attention, and starts smiling creepily)
we have time. No rush
If you have a headache, then I'm happy to help. Let's go.
THAT WONT BE NECESSARY
(Mez gently grabbed Marionette's hand)
Mari, please. Let me help you.
(Marionette pulled her hand back, making an offended look)
I said, I don’t need your help.
(Marionette, no matter how frustrated, had never used this tone of voice, ever. Something here isn’t right)
Are you possessed? You have to tell me if you're possessed.
I don’t HAVE to do anything.
(Marionettes eyes aren’t just red, they are a deep maroon)
Oh, you are possessed. Thanks for letting me know.
(Mez turned and left)
(Marionette started following)
What are you talking about? Why are you leaving? Also, do you have a flashlight?
First you want darkness, then you want light... yes I have a flashlight.
Excellent
(Marionette laughs disturbingly)
So, do you want to come to my place and we can get my flashlight?
Yes, why haven’t we done that already! Chop chop, let’s go! With her out of the way we can finally get to killing.
(ok, whatever this is is making Marionette super mean)
Who's "her"?
Oh, that coward? An annoyance who keeps me from doing my job.
Bold of you to assume she's a coward and doesn't just want different things than you. Maybe she would call you a masochist.
I’m here because she couldn’t do her job right, and now, I’m going to make sure she can’t interfere. Am I clear?
You're the boss! The queen, even.
Thank you. Now where is your house?
Right this way, Queenie.
(They arrived at the house)
It's a bit dark in here, I always turn off the lights when I'm not here to prevent fires, of course. But I keep the windows shut for privacy.
(All the lights are candles or kerosene lamps and there are no matches in plain view)
It’s so dark in here, how do you even see?
Well, ideally I would light a candle. I technically do have a flashlight, but it's terribly anachronistic, so I only use it for emergencies.
And naturally, I don't keep matches just lying around in the house. That's like inviting someone to commit arson! That would simply be untenable, so I keep my matches on my person at all times. I suppose it also is helpful if someone needs a light for their cigarette or cigar.
I suppose, though, however, I may have potentially increased my capacity for night vision over time due to these conscientious habits of mine. There's nothing wrong with a servant of the prince of darkness being able to function in shadow, is there?
Rhetorical question, anyway, can I get you anything while you're here?
you can get me a flashlight. Then, I won’t have to stay here in the dark
Ah right, of course. I keep it in my bedroom, in case of emergencies. One moment, don't go anywhere.
(Mez went to the bedroom to find the flashlight)
… how long do they have to take. This is frustrating…
Hey, just popping out to say I don't actually use they/them pronouns. I prefer if people who actually know me don't use that for me, as it just feels impersonal. My pronouns are he/she.
Also, I keep my flashlight out of the way because it is an eyesore. If you wanted a candlestick or a kerosene lamp, that would have been much easier as they are everywhere.
UGH! WE DONT HAVE TIME FOR THIS! IF I DONT GET BRIGHT LIGHT SOON IM GONNA
Why am I in your house, Mez?
Finally. It was taking forever to stall that thing that had controlled you. Anyway, do you want some sunglasses now that you're here?
It’s dark enough already in here, but yes please. That would be great, thanks
I know, I just mean for when you have to leave my house at some point.
(Mez went and got a pair of sunglasses)
that makes a lot of sense, also, I didn’t do anything stupid in the last 15 minutes, right? I can’t remember what happened
You didn't do anything. The thing that possessed you was being rather short with me though.
thank the stars. I’m sorry for whatever it said, I don’t want to hurt your feelings
Don't worry. I know it's not you. It doesn't seem to be too pleased with your work, though.
probably means whatever it was is getting impatient with my lack of murdering people
But you're not an Assassin.
well yeah, they won’t die permanently, but I did have this whole plan about tying people up and stuff and killing people over and over, but I kinda gave up on that idea a while ago
Yes, that sounds rather tedious and... messy...
I was less hinged (or is “more unhinged” the proper way to say it) back then
Yes, that is fair. This can't be easy for you.
existing is hard. It’s so hard. I have to keep journals or i forget entire days at a time, I can’t remember prior villages (most of the time) and good memories sometimes don’t stick around regardless
Then we might as well keep trying to make new ones.
that sounds fine by me!
Do you like to read?
I do! Why do you ask?
Because, as it so happens, I also like to read. How would you feel about discussing our favorite literature over dinner at the cafe?
Not as a date, I think I'm probably too old for you, physically, at least. Just as friends and teammates.
that sounds like a blast. I’d love to do that some time!
Come find me, any time I'm not busy with Cerenovus, and we can do just that.
sounds like a plan!
I'm looking forward to it.
now with these sunglasses, I should be able to go outside without getting possessed by whoever that was
Yes. They never did give a name, did they?
I don’t know, I can’t remember anything that happened while I was controlled
Rhetorical question.
I suppose we could try to interrogate them, but I’m not sure how that would turn out
They seem very stubborn.
Then maybe it isn’t a great idea to let them out again
Yes, I think you're probably right about that.
what do we do now? Just go about our day? I just learned that there is something in my head with me! I don’t think I can deal with that
Maybe you should find out how Innkeeper deals with it. Although, none of the things in her head are evil. Unfortunately.
That’s a good idea, I’ll go ask her after I’m done here. Thank you for helping me so much
Hey. What are friends for?
Brutal backstabbing?
No, no, that's opportunistic bottom feeders.
Supporting others at no benefit to yourself? Wait, no, that’s idiots. Wait, was that a rhetorical question?
Yes. Yes it was. Also, supporting others always has a benefit of improving your relationship with them. But only idiots improve relationships that bring neither function nor fulfillment.
how do you know they being fulfillment?
If spending time with them makes you feel better and not worse.
hmm. I see. This gives me a lot to think about
It does?
I never really thought about it like that. You have to remember that any progress I make developing myself emotionally just gets lost when I get looped, so maybe I have and I don’t remember
I just forget because you always seem so... polite and well adjusted.
yeah, I guess I give of that energy… it’s mostly because I hide everything behind layers and layers of repression and smiles! 😁 After all, you can’t forget the time I tried to murder everybody in the town in one night
You certainly are... deep. But there's nothing wrong with containing multitudes. And I hope you feel like you can be your authentic self around me.
I don’t know if I know who my authentic self is anymore…
How good are you at introspection?
depends on what I can remember that day. But generally pretty bad at it
I have found it a very helpful thing to practice. Have you ever tried keeping a journal?
yeah, it’s the only way I remember what I did yesterday, or the day before, or the day before, etc
Do you ever write about your deeper feelings in there?
Hey Mez… how are you doing? [Nova spoke softly, just in case.]
@cerenovus-official
Adequate, I suppose. Better than I was before.
Good… that… that makes me happy.
Want to tell me a bit more about your outing now?
Well… I may or may not… have fallen through the inn’s roof and into the attic. Kinda… how I got those scratches. Nothing else.
I see. And you made sure they weren't infected at all?
I made sure.
Good, good. Is that all? Did you get caught?
Yeah… that’s all. Somehow I didn’t get caught, though… somehow… somehow.
[Nova was brushing her clothes a little.]
Then what is making you act so cagy?
Well, it’s… uh… it’s… nothing. Nothing. Totally not something we didn’t plan and you didn’t agree to…
Why are you being so bad at lying right now?
I don’t know how to lie about this, ok? Are you fine with seeing what I was trying to hide?
Well, yes. Obviously I would like you to tell me the truth about most things.
I’ll be right back, then.
[Nova left, and there was some chaos heard outside.]
What on earth...
[Eventually, Nova came back with the cat in hand and a few more scratches.]
Mez, this is Terisa, the cat I found when things basically went like a train without a track. Teri, this is the only person besides our boss that is better than you.
No. Absolutely not. We cannot have a cat. And you certainly can't name it that. It's too close to Mother Teresa and she's a Saint.
…
[Nova didn’t know what to say. It expected this, but it still hurt…]
That cat was probably doing fine on it's own, and we simply don't have the time or resources to care for it.
[She tried to say something… but… its voice was stuck. Again.]
(Mez handed her a pen and paper)
If we're having this discussion, you should be able to defend your position. We're equals, after all.
[Nova grabbed them… and left. Well… that was… a little too easy.]
(Mez sighed)
Something tells me that it just doesn't want to upset me, and she didn't actually see my reasoning.
[Then she came back… without the cat. She looked pretty sad, though.]
I was expecting more resistance...
[…No words.]
Nova, I don't like this. I want a relationship where we can each communicate our wants and negotiate for what we each think is best.
I… I feel… lonely. Sometimes you aren’t here… and… I’m… alone.
You can talk to other people. You really should, for your bluff. You don't have to be a hermit.
I… I don’t know how to talk to people of the opposite team. I can barely talk to people of the same team.
Well maybe you should learn. It would be good for you. You don't want to become a freaky cat lady.
…………Do you still love me?
Yes. Obviously. I would tell you if I didn't love you anymore.
It’s just… everything is so hard for me…
I know you have it bad, but things aren't going to get better if you never work on yourself.
I don’t know how… I don’t know. I don’t know why I don’t know, I just don’t know…
Well, what about talking to people is hard for you?
Everything!!What do I say after the greetings? What if we don’t get along? Why do they expect eye contact and why do they think it’s comfortable? WHAT IF THEY DON’T LIKE TRAINS?
Calm down, calm down. I don't think people in this town expect eye contact this much. Everyone is so abnormal in this town, so you don't need to seem neurotypical. You just need to seem not evil.
Yeah… I… I have to… be good…
[She was still panicking.]
How about we practice? I'll pretend to be a good townsfolk that is just meeting you for the first time.
Um… ok…
Hello. Nice to meet you, I'm Beureacrat. What's your name?
Hi… my name’s Flowergirl…
I see. What is that like? It must be nice, getting to talk to people and be around beautiful plants instead of sitting cooped up in an office pushing papers all day.
It’s honestly kinda weird… one time this guy… seemingly from another timeline… went just to buy some flowers… never saw him again after that. I don’t know if he somehow left or…
Another timeline? Tell me more. That sounds fascinating!
Well… he wasn’t wearing clothes like us… he had a wife… only thing I really know about him. He just went, bought some flowers, and left.
Huh. That does sound odd. I wonder where he came from.
Where did he come from? Where did he go? There was no cotton in his eyes, and I doubt his name was Joe.
What did he look like his name was?
…Maybe something like… Burr? I don’t know, I’m just… guessing some random name. I have no clue.
Isn't that a last name?
Again, I… I have no clue…
Well, if he has a wife than his name probably isn't Dominic.
Is… is that a reference that I don’t understand?
Well, you referenced cotton eye joe, so I get a free one.
True.
[Nova looked a little uncomfortable.]
Are you alright?
I’m… not really good at social situations.
That's okay, I think you're doing pretty well.
…Thank you.
Do you want to know anything about my work?
Um… yeah…
It's life insurance. Rather boring stuff, really. Just a bunch of depressed old people.
…That sucks.
It does. But it pays well.
I hope it does.
Well yeah. I think the boss can tell how much I hate it though, so I don't think I'll be getting a raise any time soon.
Well, what would you most… uh… want to do?
I'm not sure. I got a degree in philosophy, but it's hard to make a career out of that these days.
…Huh.
And if I was a Philosopher, I'd just have to choose something else anyway.
Yeah… it’s… it’s…
Everything okay?
Can we stop pretending for a moment? I… I think that’s enough for now…
Right, of course. What's wrong, Nova?
It’s… um… it’s… uh… how do… how do I say this… without… [Windows XP bluescreen]
(Mez put a hand on her shoulder.)
The only way to say it, is to say it.
Speak, love, and I will listen.
[She eventually recovered.]
Well, first… I think I should get some more brain surgery soon… and second… I think I’m getting too attached to that cat… I’m sorry… I’m so sorry, I know you hate her…
I don't hate the cat. I just don't think cat ownership is a good idea for us in our current circumstances.
I… I… I understand… but I’m still upset…
I get that, but you haven't defended why you think having a cat would be a good idea at all. It seems like even you know, deep down, that this isn't the rational thing to do.
[Nova almost looked like she was going to cry…]
I… I…
(Mez looked like she was going to cave for a moment before shaking his head.)
How are we meant to have important conversations if you break down crying the second you don't get your way?
I know I shouldn’t get attached to her!
It was doing fine on its own. I'm sure if you let it go, you'll see it around sometimes.
I could feel her ribs through her fur!
We can leave food for it outside.
Um… ok…
We just don't have the time and resources to properly house a cat and give it the attention it needs. Lil Monsta is already enough hassle.
Ok… ok… ok…
I love you, Nova, but sometimes talking to you feels like debating a brick wall. You're not even going to try making points like "but caring for a cat will help us learn how to deal with Lil Monsta!" Or "we can eventually train the cat to sow chaos and evil!" Are you?
It’s… it’s hard to say anything… when I’m under a lot of stress, ok? I… we can do those… we can try… this team has some experience already, remember? REMEMBER THE SURGERY?
What? Like when you thought you were a cat?
Yes! I know it’s not the same, but you already know a bit about it… you made me happy when I was like that, so why can’t you do the same to her?
Well, you're... you. I already have reason to care about you. Besides, I mostly offloaded you to Baron.
Mostly, but not fully. You know what they can be like and knowing what issues they can cause can help us avoid them or use them against the good team. And I saw how the cat is when I was actually careful with her. Way calmer when I was, that’s for sure. Just don’t startle her, and approach her from her good side and you’ll be fine. And don’t pick her up.
But the toys, food, litterbox training and maintenence... It's a lot of work.
Hey Mez… how are you doing? [Nova spoke softly, just in case.]
@cerenovus-official

[Nova didn’t know what to say. It expected this, but it still hurt…]
That cat was probably doing fine on it's own, and we simply don't have the time or resources to care for it.

Something tells me that it just doesn't want to upset me, and she didn't actually see my reasoning.
[Then she came back… without the cat. She looked pretty sad, though.]

Hey Mez… how are you doing? [Nova spoke softly, just in case.]
@cerenovus-official

@mezepheles-official
Hey Mez… how are you doing? [Nova spoke softly, just in case.]
@cerenovus-official

(Mez sighed)
Something tells me that it just doesn't want to upset me, and she didn't actually see my reasoning.

Hey Mez… how are you doing? [Nova spoke softly, just in case.]
@cerenovus-official

@cerenovus-official
Hey Mez… how are you doing? [Nova spoke softly, just in case.]
