I've been listening to this Kevin Gates tape for the past week or so, but more intently the past few days on my commute to work and at the office today. He flows similar to Wayne during his late 2000s mixtape run, while his voice fluctuates between a near carbon-copy of Young Buck and a raspier B.G.. He is from Louisiana (Baton Rouge to be exact), so the influences are there from Trill Ent, No Limit and '90s Cash Money. The start of "The Luca Brasi Story" is pretty fast-paced and non-sympathetic. With bravado raps detailing gun toting and trap houses, it's nothing new to the ear, even when Gates' flow makes it enjoyable and melodic with great hooks. When you name your project after an enforcer of The Corleone family, why would it be about emotional topics? Still, the early part of the tape paints a shallow picture of Gates until you reach songs like "Neon Lights" or "Twilight". There, he's discussing early love, friendships, deep relationships, life's next steps and his belief in those above and around him. The way his voice goes up and down in pitch and raspyness, while rapping and singing, gives you a window to the emotional toll day-to-day life takes on him. It's this part of the tape that resonates with me the most. It offers the breadth of talent he can balance on and between each record. Even though I've listened to it a lot, it's the type of project that probably takes a couple more listens to catch a rhyme or two that you missed and wonder how you let it pass it in the first place. Gates just signed a deal w/ Atlantic Records and is with Ca$h Money on the management side, so I hope those enterprises support him properly. That should mean they want to start selling his music, but "Luca Brasi Story" is only available for free at this time. If Def Jam can sell ~14,000 copies of Trinidad James' free mixtape, I don't see why Atlantic doesn't follow suit, even without a single. Fans want to support. Of course, thank you to the folks at Dirty Glove Bastard for being so knowledgeable when I have questions about artists.

Came across The Eric Andre Show this weekend. Pretty hilarious. Not to mention Hannibal Burress is a key part of the show. Reminds me of Space Ghost Coast 2 Coast, which makes it surreal to realize Space Ghost was on 15 years ago. I remember that as when I was at sleep away camp, my friend wrote me to keep me up-to-date on what Brak was doing.
Joe Walsh was stunting on this whole record. He bought a mansion, doesn't recall the price, but he's never there in the first place. Ruins hotel rooms, accountants pay for the damages.

I'm attending option one, even though I've seen Trel live and have never seen GZA (Wu-Tang at Rock The Bells doesn't count) or Kool Keith live. I've met Keith before and while he was drinking a bottle of Andre I told him how much I enjoyed his old freestyle on Stretch & Bob when he kept calling Xzibit "Everlast" and simply counted from 1 to 25 at one point. He asked me if I had the freestyle on me. I did not.

Lil' Lody gets a lot of criticism, some of it deserved, for jacking sounds and beats from the likes of Drumma Boy, Lex Luger and Southside On Tha Track. On Yo Gotti's "Harder," he simply re-makes Waka Flocka's "Hard In The Paint" and adds a little extra to make it his own. This isn't to say he's just a biter. On the contrary, he has shown he can be original in his productions.
Take for instance the intro track on Eldorado Red's "McRado's 2" tape that was released the other week. Starting off with jabbing synths that open into a come-and-go static which erupts with bells tolling, he allows 'Rado to challenge his usual flow and even speed it up on the last part of this single verse intro (to a very solid tape). It reminds me of the late-90s Hypnotize Minds sound that was pretty simple yet still extremely menacing with headphones on. Lody has done extensive work with DJ Paul so that could explain the influence. A good amount of today's synth-heavy producers seem to take from that Triple 6 clubhouse.
The attraction to add layer after layer to create some kind of trap symphony isn't necessary for today's rap music to get attention and I think Lody is able to do that well in this case while giving me something to look forward to for his future productions. You don't want to label these guys as "one trick ponies" when they have the resources to create very original sounds (ala Drumma Boy sampling birds cawing on Gucci Mane's "Pancakes") each time they're in front of their computer screen.
