SCL/Cambridge Analytica and its CEO Alexander Nix have been in the news a lot lately, chiefly because of their role in the Trump campaign. The fall of Cambridge Analytica was prompted by a Channel 4 documentary in which Nix boasted about running ‘counter ops’ — sting operations and so on — against political opponents. The firm shut down on Wednesday. In this podcast, Sven, now the CEO of a company called Verbalisation, talks to Freddy Gray about his part in those ‘counter ops’ in elections in the Caribbean; about working with Nix and the mysterious figure of Christian Kalin, the head of Henley & Partners, a ‘citizenship by investment’ company.
Parkinson's disease begins in gut?
This study builds on a growing body of work that the gut plays a role in Parkinson’s, says Burn. For example, people who have had the main nerve to their stomach cut – an old treatment for stomach ulcers – have a lower risk of the condition. No single bacterium or virus has been pinpointed as the cause. But early evidence suggests that people with Parkinson’s have different gut bacteria to healthy people. Some doctors are already experimenting with treating patients with antibiotics or faecal transplants. “It could be that having the wrong bacteria in your gut triggers inflammation,” says Sébastien Paillusson at King’s College London. “We know that inflammation makes synuclein more likely to aggregate.” Other studies have shown that farmers exposed to certain pesticides, and people who get their drinking water from wells – which might be contaminated with pesticides – are more likely to get Parkinson’s. Perhaps these chemicals can also damage nerves in the gut. Whatever the culprit, knowing the location of the first strike allows for early detection – and treatment. For instance, drugs that mop up synuclein fibres or block their formation are in the works. If these are given to people before the fibres reach the brain they should have a better chance of success. It might also be possible one day to screen for fibres in the nerves of the gut during colonoscopies for early-stage cancers, says Burn.
The finding made sense because people with Parkinson’s often report digestive problems – mainly constipation – starting up to 10 years before they notice tremors. Interestingly, another early symptom of Parkinson’s is loss of smell. It may be no coincidence, says Burn, that the nose and gut are two organs where nerve cells are exposed to the outside world – and to potentially problematic toxins and microbes. Now, the synuclein fibres have been shown travelling from the gut to deep within the brain. Collin Challis at the California Institute of Technology and his colleagues injected synuclein fibres into the stomach and intestine of mice. Three weeks later the fibres could be seen at the base of the brain, and by two months they had travelled to parts of the brain that control movement. The mice also became less agile – similar to people with Parkinson’s disease. The work was reported at the Society for Neuroscience meeting in San Diego last month.

That line of thought carried down the chain of command. Both Eric Garcetti and Bill de Blasio, the mayors of Los Angeles and New York, vowed to protect vulnerable populations in their cities. (Sanctuary cities across the nation, including Chicago, Seattle, and Denver, did the same, even though Trump threatened to defund them.) Charlie Beck, the chief of the L.A.P.D., added, “We are not going to work in conjunction with Homeland Security on deportation efforts. That is not our job, nor will I make it our job.” These announcements cannot be dismissed as simply the whiny objections of the coastal élites. Thirty-nine million people live in California—twelve per cent of the population of the United States. The state is home to the economic and cultural axes of Silicon Valley and Hollywood. Last year, its economy became the sixth largest in the world, a spot formerly held by France. Clinton beat Trump by twenty-eight points in California, and by twenty-one points in New York. Muhammad Ali, the man considered the greatest boxer of all time, died late Friday at a hospital in Phoenix at age 74. He was battling respiratory problems.
He died of septic shock related to natural causes, with his family at his bedside, according to family spokesman Bob Gunnell.
Ali inspired millions by standing up for his principles during the volatile 1960s and by always entertaining — in the boxing ring and in front of a microphone.
Cassius Clay (Ali’s given name) won a gold medal at the Rome Olympics in 1960. He wanted more: a professional heavyweight championship. He arrived in Miami in October to work with legendary trainer Angelo Dundee. Dundee, who died in 2012, recalled the first day Clay showed up.
“Bounding up the steps of the Fifth Street gym, and the steps were pretty rickety, you know, all wood. Bouncing up, he said, ‘Angelo, line up all your bums. I’m gonna beat 'em all,’ ” Dundee said.

Man-made climate change is already cutting into oxygen levels in some parts of the world's oceans and could start producing new "dead zones" in some parts of the seas by 2030, US researchers warned this week. Seawater has natural swings in the amount of oxygen it holds. But warming makes it harder for that water to absorb and distribute oxygen — and if carbon emissions continue on their current path, human-produced warming is likely to lead to falling oxygen concentrations across large areas of the oceans, scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research have found. "It's very difficult to pull out the human driven-trend until that trend becomes so pronounced that it falls outside the envelope of that natural variability," said Matthew Long, an oceanographer at the Colorado-based center and the leader of the new study. So Long and his colleagues used computer models to calculate the extent of the natural swings and projected when oxygen depletion that was clearly human-made was likely to start happening. In some environments, like the Arctic — where temperatures are rising roughly twice as fast as they are across the planet as a whole — and the tropical Atlantic Ocean, the process has started already, the study concluded. Much of the Pacific Ocean is likely to start seeing large sections with reduced oxygen by 2030, while other stretches of the Pacific and much of the northern Indian Ocean will see little change by the end of the century. "The fact that ocean deoxygenation is occurring and will continue to occur, likely at an accelerated rate, is a near-certainty if human-driven warming continues," Long said. Deoxgenation due to climate change is already detectable in some parts of the ocean and will likely become widespread between 2030 and 2040. Other parts of the ocean, shown in gray, will not have detectable loss of oxygen due to climate change even by 2100. "I think for a long time that people thought the oceans were unchangeable that we could never have an impact on such large bodies of water," said Keryn Gedan, a marine ecologist at the University of Maryland, College Park. "This paper makes you realize how far our reach is and the impact that climate change is going to have globally." Warmer tropical oceans, supercharged by the past year's El Niño phenomenon, are already causing a worldwide coral bleaching event that is killing the picturesque reefs of the tropical oceans. Add in a reduction in the concentration of dissolved oxygen, and the effect is likely to pose a threat to some forms of marine life. "I think it has implications for the health of marine ecosystems," Long said. "And to the extent that we rely on those systems for a variety of services — one of them is a food supply — we're basically pushing the system towards a place where those services may be less reliable."
"We have to be very careful in an attention economy, to be efficient in the information flows that we create," says Sinan Aral, a professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management who has also worked in the startup world of apps, social media, and marketing tech. "Beyond a certain number of optimal projects . . . you start to experience diminishing and negative returns to multitasking behavior." There hasn't yet been any published research on the impact of Slack on productivity. But there is a recent study on Jive, a social network for offices, by Paul Leonardi, a professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Leonardi did an experiment with employees at Discover Financial Services, which has 15,000 people on staff. He divided about 70 of them into two groups. One used Jive, which is a bit like Facebook for office workers, for six months; the other group didn't use Jive at all. The group on Jive wound up with a much better understanding of the expertise of each of their coworkers, as well as a better understanding of who knew whom—positive results that wouldn't shock anyone who’s used Facebook.

That magic combination of sweetness without calories has made artificial sweeteners among the most widely used food additives in a world that is struggling to keep its waistline in check. But people generally dislike the idea of “chemicals” in their food, and sweeteners have attracted their share of scare stories. The idea that they cause cancer has proved especially hard to shift, despite no evidence to suggest it is true. A lesser-known (though more respectable) worry is that consuming them might—ironically, and in defiance of common sense—be associated with obesity. A paper just published in Nature bolsters that view. It provides a big dollop of evidence in support of an emerging idea that artificial sweeteners are not directly bad for people (humans cannot even digest most of them). Rather, they may be bad for the zillions of microbes that live in people’s guts—and this, in turn, may be bad for their human hosts. Between three and ten times as many bacteria live on or in the typical human as there are cells in that person’s body. Researchers have only recently begun to appreciate the importance of these fellow travellers, known collectively as the “microbiome”. Gut bacteria, in particular, seem able to affect all kinds of bodily functions. Their actions and secretions have been implicated in everything from depression and arthritis to the regulation of the immune system.
