Jordana LeSesne (1.8.7) is a Black trans woman. She is widely regarded as the top drum and bass producer in the world. Without her, we wouldn’t have electronic music as we know it today.
She came out in 1998 and went on to get a contract with the Syfy Channel, be profiled in Rolling Stone, and have several albums chart in the Top 25.
She also mixed the original music for the FREE Cece documentary!
On the left, you’ll see an unhappy trans girl not being allowed to wear the skirt she had hidden under her bed. On the right, you’ll see a much happier trans woman who can wear whatever she wants. If there’s one thing I want my social media presence to tell people, it’s to listen to your transgender children, friends, and community members. I wasn’t allowed to wear clothing that I was comfortable in for over 5 years and it took over 6 years to convince my parents to let me go on hormones. By simply listening, these years of discomfort and dysphoria could have been avoided. Trans folks know what’s right for our own bodies; it’s time to listen to our needs and narratives.
Janelle Monáe comes out as nonbinary
I suppose we have known for some time, but now it is official, the talented music maker and actor Janelle Monáe has told the world that they are nonbinary.
This was on the April 20 episode of “Red Table Talk” (via NBC News), where Monáe said:
“I’m nonbinary, so I just don’t see myself as a woman, solely. I feel all of my energy. I feel like God is so much bigger than the ‘he’ or the ‘she.’ And if I am from God, I am everything. I am everything. But I will always, always stand with women. I will always stand with Black women. But I just see everything that I am. Beyond the binary.”
Variety has more.
